Douglas, Elmer H. 10 Jun 1865 - 3 Sep 1934 CCR 6 Sep 1934 p8

[Note: Son of Jasper & Lucinda (Gillespie) Douglas; married 17 Jul 1898 Margaret A. “Maggie” Bates 1880 - 3 Dec 1961; no record in Chaffin Funeral Home records]

Elmer H. Douglas was born June10, 1865, at Swan Iowa. He was the son of Jasper and Lucinda Douglas. He parted this life Sept. 3, 1934, at Aurora, Missouri, aged 69 years, 2 months and 23 days. He united with the Christian church in 1923 and has been a faithful member. He is survived by the widow, Margaret A. Douglas; seven children, Esta Rathbun of Ozark; E.E. Douglas of Kansas City; Ena Davis of Springfield, CO; Neal Douglas of Springfield; Victor Douglas of the home address; Mary Shelton of Nixa and Doris of home. Also by seven grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Callie Ray of Springfield, CO, and Mrs. Bertha Johns of Sparta. Funeral services were held at the Christian Church, Ozark, Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 2 o’clock with Rev. W.P. Honn officiating. Burial was made in the Greenlawn cemetery, north of Springfield, under the direction of T.B. Chaffin of Ozark and Otto Rathbun of Sparta. The subject of the above brief obituary was indeed an exemplary character. Firm and sincere in his spiritual belief he entered into the work of his chosen church with a zeal and interest which led him into an eldership which important position he filled nobly and honorably. As a young man he studied civil engineering in Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, and at one time served Christian County as county engineer. He had had a rather broad experience, touching such walks in life as farmer, merchant, grain, and produce, carpenter and smelter operator. The influence of his upright life had touched communities in Iowa, Kansas, Colorado and Missouri. Until several months ago when they moved to Hurley to assist in the care of Mrs. Douglas’ mother the family lived here. It is said that the cause of death dates back to his youth, the effects of a serious case of typhoid which left a weakness in a lower limb that bothered him more or less. Lately it became acute and some two weeks ago he entered the Aurora hospital where amputation of the lower limb was deemed necessary in his fight for life, but the infection had had time to do it’s deadly work and death came last Monday afternoon. Elmer Douglas was a MAN, honest, upright, sincere, kindly and Christian.
