Two Killings - Two Men Kill Each Other - At Chadwick, Trouble Grew Out Of an Alleged Case of Seduction
A double tragedy took place at Chadwick last Sunday. The parties were Charles Freeman and Robert Keen. Some time ago, Freeman had filed a suit against Keen for seduction of his daughter. Bad feelings existed between the two men ever since, and they had been carrying revolvers for each other. Below we give you the account published in Monday’s Globe Democrat, which is virtually correct. “Charles Freeman met Bob Keen in a dry good store, and when within 5 feet of each other, Keen drew his revolver at Freeman who immediately return the fire, mortally wounding Keen. Keen emptied his revolver at Freeman, two more shots taking effect. Freeman fired twice. Keen was dead before any one could interfere, Freeman who lived in Chadwick was taken home and died within a short time. Keen was 22 years of age, and the son of Thomas Keen, a well-to-do farmer, living four miles south of Sparta. He had for some time been paying attentions to a 19 year old daughter of Freeman and was frequent caller at the Freeman home. A few days ago the girl preferred charges against Keen in court, alleging that he had wronged her. The charge was brought at the insistence of the mother of the girl. The father, when the facts were made known to him, at once declared that he would kill Keen on sight. Friends of Keen apprised him of his danger and warned him to leave, but he declared he would not do so, but would remain and fight it out. He also armed himself and prepared for the meeting with the father of his alleged victim. Freeman was a merchant and had a store in Chadwick and another at Garrison. He was held in high esteem by everybody, Both families are prominent in the community. The body of Keen was removed to the home of his father, and the two funerals will probably take place Monday, the interment being in the same cemetery.

Powersite automatic gates opened without warning and rushing waters catch three boys in boat -- accident happened last Saturday evening. Three youths were drowned in White River at Forsyth early last Saturday evening when an automatic gate in the Powerside dam opened without warning and the rush of water capsized the light boat in which they were fishing under the powerhouse. Russell Keene, 17, of 421 E. Brewer St., Springfield. Ray Simmons, 21, Forsyth. Joe Day, 21, Forsyth. The accident occurred about 8:30 o'clock when an automatic switch in the powerhouse overhead opened the gate to one of the huge power wheels after the line from another wheel, which had been in use, had broken as a result of Saturday afternoon’s rainstorm. The youths apparently realized the danger when the gate slowly began to open, for one of them was seen to reach for a handhold on the dam wall above the waterline. In so doing, he upset the boat, however, according to witnesses and his two companions grabbed hold of him. The first youth’s grasp was not sufficient to hold himself and his mates and the three were carried down to death in the turbulent waters below. When word of the tragedy was flashed to the powerhouse all the gates were closed and the search for the bodies began. The bodies of the Day and Keene youths were recovered half an hour later. The Simmons youth’s body was recovered several hours later. Simmons was widely known in southwest Missouri as captain of the champion Forsyth High School basketball team in 1932 and again last winter, when his team was eliminated in the semi-finals at the meet at State Teachers College in Springfield. He was a large youth and played center on the team. He was married and had a baby girl. His wife was the former Gladys Keith of Forsyth.

Murder and Suicide Fred Keeton Shoots and Kills Wife, Then Shoots Self at Oklahoma City
The first news of the killing of Mrs. Keeton, formerly Miss Sina Logan of Ozark, by her husband Fred Keeton, reached Ozark Wednesday morning upon the arrival of the Springfield Republican in Ozark and a little later by telephone message from M. M. Logan of Springfield to his brother R. R. Logan; M. R. Logan, father of the dead woman, having left Springfield early Wednesday morning with his auto truck for Oklahoma points. Following is the Associated Press report of the affair as appearing in the Springfield Republican of Wednesday: Oklahoma City, March 25. - Fred Keeton, 26, of Ozark, Mo shot and killed his wife, Sina, 22 years of age, in the doorway of the Y. M. C. A. where she was stopping and then killed himself. Keeton is said to have attempted to persuade his wife to withdraw an action for divorce, recently instituted. Letters found on Keeton indicate he was a salesman for a Tulsa concern. M. R. Logan, the father, was reached at Mt. Vernon and informed of the tragedy and at once turned back towards home, reaching Ozark about 6:30 Wednesday evening, W. L. Keeton, father of Fred, in company with R. H. Logan, left Wednesday afternoon for Oklahoma City to bring the remains of both parties home for burial. They are expected to arrive on Friday evenings’ train. As we go to press Thursday afternoon no definite arrangements for the funeral of either, but tentative plans for the funeral of Mrs. Keeton by her parents are, that the funeral will be held Sunday with burial in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. This is the most lamentable tragedy and has been a severe shock to the whole community, as both parties are well known in Ozark, Sina having been born and reared here and was known by old and young alike and highly respect by all. The Logan family, we are sure have the deepest sympathy of the whole community, We have been unable to get information regarding funeral arrangements for Keeton, but it is presumed the funeral will be held Saturday or Sunday with interment at the Selmore cemetery, Fred was the son of W. L. Keeton, a well known farmer living near Selmore.
