A Million Memories

They called it “Ozark’s Grand Ole Opry”. Beverly Haworth Lines, daughter of Leo and Lucille Haworth, of Springfield, named it when she was 8 years old. All now that’s left of “Ozark’s Grand Ole Opry” is a pile of ancient, shattered lumber. And a million memories. The shattered lumber is the remains of two buildings on the northeast corner of the square demolished recently by B. J. Maddux, owner. A large part of the sentimental memories are those of the musicians who held jam sessions every Saturday 25 years ago, playing the country favorites of Ozarkers and of others who jammed into the old building or stood outside to listen. One of the tunes was “Greene County Breakdown” written by Leo “Curly” Haworth as the theme of a band he led several years ago called the Greene County Ramblers, named for an auto agency the Ramblers played on sponsored shows. One of the musicians was By (Byron) Kelley said to be Ozark’s last black citizen when he died last January. By Kelley’s death inspired one of the most heavily attended funerals in Ozark history and eulogies by prominent citizens, including Mayor Fesperman. Leader of the jam sessions was Emanuel Wood with his fiddle, still sawing away at 79, donating his music to the Saturday night parties held once a month at the Senior Citizen’s Center. His sons Ray and Rex often join in the Center sessions. Other musicians included Thelma Wood Hermilla (bass), David Boyd (banjo), Nelson Hermilla (guitar), Mrs. Posey of Ava (electric guitar) and Leo and his fiddle. Emanuel Wood who sold the building to Maddux more than 20 years ago, occasionally plays at Silver Dollar City with the Haworths and their group. John Osborn and Glen Mackey could always be counted on to jig-dance at the jamborees. Beverly Haworth when she was 8 asked is she could give the Grand Ole Opry name. She climbed up on a bench and did the lettering on the tattered wall behind the seated listeners. By Kelley and his upright bass gained farm in St. Louis when the Ramblers were invited for a department store’s celebration of St. Louis’s 150th anniversary in 1976. The band’s appearance depended in Kelley’s being included, as a salute to the black citizens of St. Louis. Haworth said his group has been invited again, next summer, for an appearance in St. Louis, by the same store, Famous-Barr. Kelley can’t make it. He’s on a permanent engagement with that Big Jam Session in the Sky.

Mike Crain’s ‘Grand Ole Opry’ Pictures

The pictures here were developed for the Headliner by Mike Crain from negatives taken at least 25 years ago. They were taken during Saturday night jam sessions in what was called ‘Ozark’s Grand Ole Opry’ in buildings on the northeast corner of the Square, demolished about a month ago. Identifications were by Emanuel Wood, leader of the pickers and fiddlers Dean Harris and Leo and Lucille Haworth (assisted by Geneva Huff). The latter three live in Springfield.  Photo 1 caption - Marge Howell smiles and “counts the house” while Emanuel Woods, mustached and dark haired around a quarter-century ago, coaxes oldtime music out of his fiddle. Photo 2 caption - Mrs. Posey of Ava starts the left to rights in this Mike Crain photo, with her electric guitar, woman with back to camera unidentified, behind her Marge Howell, then Emanuel Wood, Dave Boyd, Nelson Hermilla, Ray Wood (guitar) and Byron (By) Kelley admiring Thelma Wood Hermilla’s technique on the upright piano. Photo 3 caption - Here are some spectators from around 25 years ago at Ozarks Saturday night Grand Ole Opry, the name given and painted by Beverly Haworth Lines of Springfield when she was 8 years old. From left, Dora Lee Barnett who died this past March 30, John Osborn and Mr. and Mrs. Brady Wood.  Photo 4 caption - Identifications of this Mike Crain’s photo group. Mrs. Bob (Dude) Herndon, Madge Howell, Mrs. Posey of Ava and her electric guitar, Dave Boyd (banjo), dancers John Osborn (hat) and Glen Mackey. Behind Osborn on the upright piano is Thelma Wood Hermilla. Photo 5 caption - The late Byron (By) Kelley, fingering the bull fiddle about 25 years ago in Ozark’s Grand Ole Opry. Profile at left is Thelma Wood Hermilla, probably playing the guitar. She also played the upright bass fiddle and still does. (Story from Kelley’s funeral last March is inside today’s Headliner)

At Long Last - The By Kelley Story, By Joe Cody, News Editor

“Why don’t you do a story on By Kelley?” By Kelley? Who’s By Kelley. These were a reader’s question and my answer when Byron Kelley died last March 2, just 13 days short of his 87th birthday. “He was Ozark’s last black citizen.” Well, what else. “Er - I’ll look around and find someone to tell you about By.” We were new in Ozark last March, and in our haste to get on with the “important” news, we never got around to learning about By Kelley. Then J. B. Maddux tore down his old buildings on the northeast corner of the Square. And somebody said, : for years, they held country music jam sessions there on Saturday nights.: Then, Mike Crain brought us prints of pictures he took he doesn’t know how many years ago, of Emanuel Wood and his “Ozark’s Grand Ole Opry” and of spectators who gathered every Saturday night to listen., In one of the photos was By Kelley pounding out rhythms on a bass fiddle. We began to ask around and found that Kelley’s funeral was one of the biggest Ozark ever had . . . that 250 to 300 people attended . . . that those who couldn’t get into the 200-seat chapel at the Adams Funeral Home stood outside and listen via loudspeaker. The even before, 100 to 125 visited with the family. At the funeral, they heard a minister and five other white resident eulogize By Kelley as a gentle, highly respected man who brought musical joy and inspiration to uncounted thousands in Ozark and Silver Dollar City. (He also played in St. Louis during that city’s sesquicentennial in 1976). About him, it seemed nobody could think of an unkind thought. We learned there was a tape recording of the service. It was made by Anthony McConnell, Ozark lawyer and lifelong friend of Kelley. Mrs. Thelma Adams obtained it for us from Mrs. Dorothy Kelley who lives now in her father’s home. On an inside page, we are publishing excerpts from the tributes paid to Kelley at his funeral.

By Kelley’s Funeral One of Ozark’s Biggest.

Eulogies from Ozark residents marked the funeral service last March 6 of Byron (By) Kelley. Among them were Dwight Hawkins, Mayor Leon Fesperman, Homer Lawing, Anthony McConnell and Mrs. Janis Rhodes. The pallbearers were Algia Gray, Hawkins, Ted Green, Loyce Bilyeu, Delbert Cook and H. A. Buddette. The soloist was Mrs. Janis Rhodes. Mrs. Freda Sweet was the organist. Dr. James Kellett, minister, Ozark Christian Church, was the officiant. Dr. Kellett included these poetic points in his long eulogy. “Your years of life were a lovely song, the last sweet notes of which stood long. You passed into silence while we listened. We who loved you listen still, expectantly, and we feel that grief for you was surely wrong. You have merely passed beyond where we cannot see. For us who know you, dead of ages past, you took life tiptoe to the very last. It never lost its lovely look, You kept your interest in its thrill book. To you, death came no conquering in the end. You merely waved and smiled at another friend.” “Here was a men who came to be loved and respected by the whole town of Ozark.  Hawkins “We are here today to honor By and pay our last respects to him whom I consider one of Ozark’s finest citizens. He has lived here his entire life. “By started work for my father in the flour mill when I was seven years old. He continued for practically forty years. He was the first colored person that I had ever seen. “By was a man who would give you an honest day’s work. I’ve seen By come to work many times when he was really too sick to work, but it was a loyalty to his job that he showed up to do his work. “I worked side by side with By for several years at different levels of work and I never thought of him any different than I did the white men who worked for my father, and I always thought that practically all the citizens of Ozark felt the same way and think those thoughts are proven here today by so many of you being here to pay your final respects to By, and by the many beautiful flowers. “When his wonderful wife Odessa was living, they were both very active in the Ozark Christian Church. After she passed away, By never attended much, but he was loyal - he always had someone come by to give them his monthly financial contribution to the church. “By loved his music and he thrilled many people. A lot of you have heard his bass fiddle. I can remember when I was real young, you heard the music in someone’s yard, it would be By and somebody playing and a bunch of us younger people would go and we’d dance out in the yard. You could catch them in different parts of town. And, as you all know, later he played at Silver Dollar City. His heart was with his music. His heart was in being a good friend to everyone. “About two weeks ago, I had a long visit with By, whom I considered my very close friend. and my closing thought today is that God has gained a friend and that Ozark has lost one.  McConnell - “ I feel like God has blessed Ozark by letting By Kelley live with us. I feel like we have had a real spiritual life by seeing By every day and by seeing him smile.  Fesperman - “As the mayor of Ozark, I’m speaking for the people. He was a very good citizen.  Janis Rhodes - “Today is the end of an era in Ozark. I think we all respected By. I remember growing up in the Christian Church. They were always there. Lawing recalled that he knew Kelley as a boy because “my parents raised him.”
