Keysser, Mable Marie (Little) ? - ? CCH-N 4 Jan 2006

Where the High Winds Blow - Dedicated to Mabel Keysser, by Orval Keysser

When you hear the high winds blow And you feel a pinch of fall

And you watch the geese fly by And you hear the jay-bird call

And when the corn-shocks start to lean And the pumpkins turn to gold

When the corn-cribs full of nubbins And the turnips are pulled and hole’d

Over in the edge of the tree-grown’n woods You can hear the axes ring

When Mama speaks of better times How long it is ‘til spring

And the school-house in the holler Where thick smoke lifts above

Will make the children start to hunt For their shawl and cap - and glove

When sister opens the catalog And sees Old Santa Claus

The she peeks out through the window It draws her gate - because

Up there nestled in the rose-briar thicket Stands the only tree - a waitin’

But her choice - when it come She might just be a hatin’

She’d watched it grown, from a tiny bud And now - it’s beauty show’d

Would ever the hill-side be the same By the path, where it grow’d?

Please brother - don’t you hate to see Out pretty tree chopped down

All summer long, we’ve watched it grown It’s always been around/

Why not hang our stockings up And Mama can leave a light

And we promise not to peed After we say good-night.

I only ask for a pair of beads And if you get a ball

We won’t need no great big tree Our stockings will hold it all,.

It’s the only thing we’ll ever ask Old Santa Claus to do

We’ll tell him not to look too close ‘Cause, we left it - where it grew.

And when I get too big to believe And you become a man

When Mama opens the catalog We’ll be proud we let it stand.

And along the all, where they hung we’ll hand them up again

And then we’ll tell Old Santa - thanks. It’s where it’s always been.

And I believe, I’ll always remember back How summer made it grow

And on the hill at Christmas time Up where the high winds blow.

And then, beneath the flakes of snow It turns from green to white

And it’s time to hang our stockings up ‘Cause, Santa Claus come tonight.

But, all I want is a pair of beads, Kinda like you used to bring

And for brother - he won’t mind Just about anything.

Our stockings are hangin’ on the wall Close by - plain in sight.

The cookies you like - I didn’t forget. They’re right beside the light.

Keysser, Sarah Elizabeth (Logan) 18 Nov 1846 - 24 Oct 1925 CCR 6 Nov 1925 p1

Mrs. Sarah E. Keysser was born in Christian County November 18, 1846 and died October 24, 1925 at her farm 2 miles south of Highlandville. Mrs. Keysser came from good moral parentage, having been taught the way of life from early childhood, She became a member of the Christian church in her young days. These blessed teachings installed in her early life made her a kind and generous soul to everyone. One March 23, 1867, she was married to Carl G. Keysser of Highlandville, where they were about the first ones to settle at that play. They started a small country store, bringing goods from Springfield on horseback and in wagons. They soon moved to the little farm where they spent their day of happiness. To this union were born five children, Minnie, Alma, Olga, Herman and Gertie. Her helper was taken away from her by a drunken man in the early days, leaving her alone with the five children, the oldest 13 years of age and the youngest 5 months old. She saw she had a task to do and a goal to reach, going forward into the world yet young. You could find her on the little farm, toiling by sunrise until the sunset faded. Then with her milk pail and feed basket, she would start to do her chores to provide for her loved ones. Honest dealings with her fellow men and so generous to everyone around her in need, she stored away enough of the world’s goods to keep her family and to comfort her in her last days. A few days before she passed away, she said her task was done and that she was ready and not afraid to go. Her last words were, “Lay me down and Herman, you be good.” And thus she passed on, a loving mother, a faithful grandmother, and a loyal friend to all. She leaves her five children, all of whom were at her bedside shortly after her death; one brother, John Logan of Arkansas, and nineteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a host of friends to cherish her memory.  - A Grandchild
