Body Found in Ozark; man charged

Donna Osborn Headliner News

Thomas Patrick Wigton, 49, dumped Douglas Bailey’s body behind a strip mall in 65 Marketplace at 1711 James River Road May 7. According to information from Christian County Prosecutor Ron Cleek, who charged Wigton with abandoning a corpse, a Class D felony, Wigton claimed that Bailey had overdosed on drugs. According to information in the probably cause statement, Wigton said that he had driven Bailey to a residence and Bailey had gone inside. Then the people inside the house brought the lifeless body of Bailey out and put him in the car with Wigton. Not knowing what to do, Wigton dumped the body behind the strip mall and then called the police from a nearby public telephone. Ozark Police Chief Lyle Hodges said a preliminary autopsy showed no trauma; toxicology results are pending. “There was no apparent cause of death,” he said, “The only person who was there when the body was dumped was Mr. Wigton.” Both men lived at Foster House, a boarding house at 1400 W. Hall.

Two killed in plane crash near Ozark Friday, investigation ongoing.

By Marsha Paxson, Headliner News Staff

Two Ozark residents were killed Friday when they Beechcraft Bonanza airplane crashed near the intersection of Route CC and Fremont Road, ½ mile west of Air Park South. Wyman Bailey, 66, the pilot and his wife, Betty, 67. Were apparently attempting to land at the airport at about 1:30 p.m. when the left wing of the low-flying plane struck the ground and flipped the craft end over end. Witnesses said the plane crashed nose-first into the ground. No explosion or fire occurred upon impact. A first responder administered CPR to Wyman Bailey to no avail. It is believed Betty Bailey died upon impact. Although construction workers in the area said the airplane seemed to “miss” or sputter as though it were out of fuel. Federal Aviation Administration investigators said all four fuel tanks had fuel in the,. Mitch Robbins, an Air Safety Investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board, said Sunday that weather was not likely a cause for the crash despite the fact winds were higher than normal Friday.
