[Note: Son of Allen C. & Maxine Juanita (Reynolds) Barber]

A collision which involved an airborne pickup truck and a halted car Saturday resulted in the death of a 19-year-old motorist.  The highway patrol said Rickey Lee Barber, Route 1, Nixa, was killed in the accident, which occurred about 1:30 a.m. on Mo. 14 in Ozark.  Troopers said the crash which claimed the life of young Barber also involved a car driven by June Humber Schlanker, 21, a Drury College dormitory resident.  She had turned north onto 12th Street in Ozark and was preparing to turn around when Barber’s westbound truck suddenly left the road, traveled into a ditch and up an embankment.  The truck became airborne, struck the top half of the halted car and traveled through the air several more feet, hitting the top of a street marker before landing on its top in a field.  A passenger in the car, Steve Forrester, 21, of 1036 South Ferguson, was taken to Cox Medical Center for treatment of a shoulder laceration.  Barber, an employee of the Paul Mueller Company in Springfield, was a 1971 graduate of Nixa High School and lifelong resident of Nixa.  He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allen C. Barber, Route 2, Nixa, and a sister, Mrs. Patricia Dzurick, Springfield.  Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Harris Chapel with the Rev. Guy Lawyer officiating.  Burial was in McConnell Memorial Cemetery.

Barnes, James C. 24 Apr 1871 - 9 Feb 1932 CCR 11 Feb 1932 p1

[Note: Son of William E. & Elizabeth Catherine (Farmer) Barnes; married 3 Jul 1897 Rose Anna B. Hedgpeth Sep 1865 - 9 Jan 1900]

J.C. Barnes takes own life. After telephoning his lifelong friend Fred Barrett, Barnes places gun in mouth and sends bullet into his brain. Left notes to Coroner and his sister, was formerly Circuit Clerk of Christian County. J.C. (Jim) Barnes of Springfield, a former clerk of the circuit court of Christian county, ended his own life late Tuesday afternoon at his home in Springfield by placing a gun in his mouth and sending a bullet into his brain. The Wednesday morning issue of the Springfield Daily News gives the following account of the tragedy: After telephoning his long-time friend, Fred Barrett, Springfield attorney, of his intention, J.C. Barnes, 60, former circuit clerk of Christian county, ended his life at his home 958 West Monroe Street, about 3 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, by firing a bullet through his mouth and into his brain. Barrett tried vainly to dissuade Barnes from any immediate act of self destruction, telling him there was an important matter he (Barrett) wished to talk over with him late in the evening. As the phone conversation ended, the attorney leaped into his automobile and drove hurriedly to Barnes’ house, but the latter was crumpled in a chair before the desk in a front room when he arrived. Barnes had penciled notes to Barrett, Doctor Stone and a sister living at Sparta, who takes care of their aged father. Framed commissions hanging above the desk before which he shot himself showed Barnes took office as circuit clerk of Christian county in 1914 and again in 1918. He was a real estate dealer and notary public here at his death, but his business had not been very extensive. Neighbors said he told them only Monday morning that he was virtually penniless and hungry. There was evidence in the dining room of his comfortable little cottage, however, of an ample breakfast having been consumed Tuesday. The note to Doctor Stone was dated 2:30 p.m., but carried the wrong date, Feb. 12, apparently taken from a January calendar leaf. It said: “I presume when you get this I will be gone. No one to blame except myself. Poor health and financial difficulties alone are to blame. No use to hold an inquest, for no one else is to blame. Yours very truly, J.C. Barnes.” A certificate of membership in a lodge adorned a wall of the house, which he obtained in a trade last March. Surviving Barnes are his father, William E. Barnes of Sparta; two brothers, John M. Barnes of Joplin and Oliver Barnes of Miami, Ok; and three sisters, Mrs. J.M. Sanders of Oronogo Junction, MO, and Misses Alice and Nellie Barnes of Sparta. Funeral arrangements are incomplete but burial will be in the cemetery at Sparta, under the direction of the Herman H. Lohmeyer funeral home.

Died, at his home, the Christian County, Mo.. May 31st, 1899 of consumption, James O. Barnes, after an illness of six months,. Mr. Barnes was born Dec. 8th, 1851, and at his death was 43 years, 5 months and 23 days old. He was a brother of M. C. and W. E. Barnes of Sparta. He was a good christian, and although a great sufferer, had no word of murmur or complaint. He realized his condition and almost expressed himself as willing to go when the time should come. He leaves a wife and one son to mourn his loss and a large circle of friends. We learned to love him for his virtues. He was a kind husband and an indulgent father. His word was his bond. We have lost a good and kind neighbor, one that will be missed for all time, but we know that our loss is his gain. May we all follow after his example. If he could not speak a good word for any one, he would not speak a disrespectful one. His remains were laid to rest in the Baker cemetery, on Bilyeu Creek, June 1st, 1899, to await the final call.  A Friend.
