Barr, Madge Ella 21 Mar 1896 - 18 Jul 1914 CCR 31 Jul 1914
[Note: Daughter of David M. & Julia Rocilla (Flynt) Barr]
While at Garrison last week, we learned full particulars of the suicide of Miss Madge Barr who lived with her father about two miles north of Garrison, It appears the young lady, who is reported as a very lively, agreeable girl formerly, had became morose over some of her failures, principally that of failing in an examination, this together with a disagreement with her father the morning of the suicide led to the rash act. It had been noted her mood and manners had changed somewhat for some time, though no one thought anything so serious would happen. Saturday morning, the 18th, she took her brother’s pistol and went to the grave of her mother who passed away some two years ago and who was buried at the Garrison cemetery, and shot herself, inflicting two wounds, one through and one near the heart, with of which it was pronounced by the Doctor would have proved fatal. The body was not found till the following Tuesday morning when the remains were gathered up and buried, the details of which are too harrowing to be told without a shudder to the reader.

Succumbs to illness of several months duration -- funeral services held Sunday at Springfield -- burial made in Maplewood cemetery
The many friends of Mrs. Fred W. Barrett, who was a resident of this city for a number of years, were grieved last Saturday to learn of her death which occurred in Springfield at 11 o’clock that morning, following an illness of several months. Mr. Barrett, who is now one of Springfield’s leading attorneys, lived in Ozark for several years. During their life in Ozark, Mrs. Barrett won for herself a host of friends who have been extremely saddened by her untimely departure. She became seriously ill several months ago and underwent several major operations. Medical skill was unable to battle with the malady with which she was afflicted and, not yet 50 years of age, she passed away. She is survived by the husband and two children, Paul, a son, and a daughter, Mrs. Juanita Davis. The funeral services were held at the Alma Lohmeyer Funeral Home in Springfield with Rev. McClung officiating. Burial was made in the Maplewood cemetery Sunday afternoon, March 23. The services were simple yet extremely impressive. The beauty of the life which the departed had lived was exemplified by the beautiful bank of flowers under which her demise reposed during the services and again in the beauty of the services administered by those in charge. A touching song, a few words of hope to the living, a tribute of well chosen words to the life that had departed; a simple and tender service in placing to rest the body were in strict harmony with the wished of her who had passed away. During her life in Ozark and in Springfield Mrs. Barrett centered her activities about her home. She lived to make it a place in which her husband and her children liked to stay and a place at which her friends liked to meet. Her hours and days and weeks were spent in home planning. While in Ozark the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred. W. Barrett was practically the center of the social life of the city. Their home was the gathering place for social events almost without number and it seemed that the hostess was in her height of happiness when making others happy by such gatherings.

Barrett, Mary Helen 8 Jun 1926 - 26 Jan 2008 Sonoma Index-Tribune CA 1 Feb 2008
[Note: Daughter of Paul W. & Dorothy (Bingham) Barrett]
Mary Helen Barrett, editor, newspaper woman, writer and wit, died Jan. 26, 2008. Born June 8, 1926, in Christian County , Missouri , she was the daughter of the late Paul W. and Dorothy Bingham Barrett and the sister of the late Carol Sarver. She grew up under the careful tutelage of her father, a judge, legal scholar and author, who served with the Missouri State Supreme Court for 30 years. Only 16 when she entered Bryn Mawr as a freshman, Mary completed her first year there, but then returned to her home state to graduate from Drury University. During her career, she served as a reporter and columnist for Missouri newspapers including the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and worked as editor of Drury University's alumni magazine. Her journalism spanned the range of possible assignments. Dragooned into writing the daily horoscope, she attracted the notice of many fortune-telling aficionados, including one who called each morning to obtain her personal lucky number for the day, which Mary dutifully provided. Perhaps her greatest challenge as a journalist, however, was during her work in Chicago as a senior editor for Compton's Encyclopedia. The President of the United States was assassinated just as the yearbook for 1963 was to go to press. At her kitchen table and through the dark night of Nov. 22, Mary rewrote and recreated the layout for the entry on John Fitzgerald Kennedy to include the end of his life. Through much of her career, she also wrote and published mystery stories, one of which, a chilling short story, "The May Basket," was translated into at least nine languages. In the early 1970s, Mary moved to Oakland, to join Lee Mirmow, head of the psychology department at Mills College. They were together until Dr. Mirmow's death in 1993. While living on the campus of Mills College, Mary became editor of the Mills Quarterly, a position she held until retirement. During that time, she also participated in writing the history of Drury University and, with her father, wrote The Young Brothers Massacre, a deft account of a 1932 shootout in the Ozarks. While at Mills, Mary enriched the life of the campus. She was the voice of Gertrude Stein in a campus production and was so convincing that some students assumed she really was the late Miss Stein. She was a founding member of the infamous Faculty Village Poker Club and Eating Society (of which there were only six members, all of whom were founders). After moving to Sonoma in 1988, and retiring in 1989, Mary continued as an editor, mentoring young writers of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry and editing their works. She had a kind pen, and never, ever, discouraged anyone. The front door on First Street East was always unlocked and often wide open and through it streamed a host of friends, colleagues and professional associates. The home health professionals who provided loving care for Mary during the last part of her life have said that they never had a client with so many visitors. Mary leaves three nieces, Mary "Becky" Hallman of Missouri , Susan Lawson of Illinois, and Paula Makin of Kansas; grandnephews Richard Hallman, Douglas Lawson, Kyle and Kevin Makin; and so many others grateful to have been a part of her magic circle. All are welcome to a memorial gathering to be announced at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to FISH, Hospice by the Bay or a charity of choice.
