Guy Brazeale, son of William Brazeale living south west of Selmore, died of influenza Monday night at the Great Lakes, Ill., Naval Training Station. The remains arrived in Ozark on Wednesday’s train and were taken to the home for burial. It is bad enough to have the boys lose their lives on the firing line, but it seems to us worse to have them die of disease in the training camps. We are sure the family have and deserve the sympathy of their friends in this sad bereavement.

Dismayed at the prospect of weeks and perhaps months of suffering, John Brazeale, 49, prominent farmer and stockman who lived near Selmore, six miles south of Ozark, ended his life at 11 o’clock Monday morning by firing a revolver bullet into his head just above the right temple. A brief note left for his wife said he had recently learned that he was suffering from an internal cancer. His suffering had become so severe, the note related, that he did not feel able to endure it any longer. Lying in a pool of blood, the body was found by Mrs. Brazeale shortly after her return from a brief visit at the home of a neighbor. Her husband had given no indication that he was going to take his own life, she said, although he had been in poor health for several years and for the past few weeks had been on a milk diet. He frequently became despondent over the state of his health, it was said. The position of the body when found indicated that Mr. Brazeale had stood in front of a large mirror and watched his reflection as he held the pistol to his head and pulled the trigger. Coroner Wilburn Maples of Clever viewed the body but decided, after an investigation, that an inquest in the case would not be necessary. Mr. Brazeale had lived all his life in the Christian county community. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Brazeale, who were among the early pioneers of the region. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruby Brazeale, and two brothers, Sam and Will Brazeale, all of the Selmore vicinity. Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon in the Selmore church, followed by interment in the Selmore cemetery under direction of the Chaffin Undertaking Company of Ozark.

In 1855, he moved to Newton county, Mo. where he resided for two years, and in 1857, he moved to what is now Christian county, having lived ever since on the farm where he died. He was one of the pioneers of this section and certainly did hid share in building up our county. He was honored by his fellow citizens with many offices during his life among them, from constable up to representative. HE was sheriff and collector for two terms, a member of the legislature for two terms and noted for a faithful, discharge of his duty under all circumstances. He has been one of our most successful farmers  and business men his home being one of the handsomest and most pleasant in this county. In 1896, he established, with his son, George T., the Bank of Ozark, which has proved a very successful institution. He was a man who followed a straight course in life, always going straight for the end he had in view. His well known and familiar figure will be sadly missed by our citizens, and the bereaved family have the sympathy of a host of friends. He left a wife, and eight children, the latter all grown and well provided to mourn his loss. Peace to his ashes.
