With a cheery goodbye.

And a wave of her hand.

She has left earthly cares

For a promised land.

We are sure her path is lined,

With flowers bright and fair,

The seeds of goodness she planted,

And they have grown there.

The accidental killing of Claude Brown of Highlandville, which happened in Springfield Monday, is told by the following story, taken from Tuesday’s Springfield Daily News: “Mother! Stop quick. You’ve run over a man!” So did Mrs. Albin F. Schneider, 1309 West Phelps St., learn from her 13 year old daughter, Reymour, of an accident that proved fatal to Claude Brown, about 42, farmer of near Highlandville. “Why, Reymour,” she exclaimed. “What are you talking about? Of course I didn’t run over anybody. I didn’t see anybody.” “But, mother,” the girl insisted, “I saw him. He was lying there at the edge of the road.” Mrs. Schneider slammed on her brakes. She rushed to the rear of her automobile. There, hardly noticeable on the far side of the street from the overhanging light, lay Mr. Brown. His upper torso rested on the edge of the road, his legs inclined into a ditch. The wheels of the machine had passed over his body, breaking his neck and crushing his chest. Mrs. Schneider called the police. The police called an ambulance. At St. John’s hospital, Mr. Brown breathed his last from torn lungs as he lay on a stretcher en route to the operating room. An unidentified woman from a car parked a few yards down the street told Mrs. Schneider, while awaiting the ambulance: “Why, I just missed that man a moment before your car ran over him.” “I was too hysterical,” Mrs. Schneider, wife of an RCA theatre service engineer, said later, “to notice if there was a smell of liquor at the scene, but several of the children in the neighborhood said there was. And two men whose names I did not learn who said they were buddies of Mr. Brown told me: “‘He isn’t hurt. You just set him on his feet and give him a drink of water to sober him up and he’ll be all right.’”. Mr. Brown is survived by his widow, Mrs. Winnie Brown, his father, John Brown of Highlandville, and an uncle, George Brown, grocer at 1708 West Chestnut St.
