Chorn, Arben C. 15 Apr 1918 - 13 Jan 2007 SN-L 18 Jan 2007

[Note; Son of Jessie & Myrtle (  ) Chorn; married Maxine; married Mary Louise]

A.C. Chorn, of Springfield, Mo., died from a massive stroke on January 13, 2007, at the age of 88 years. AC had retired from the Springfield Public Schools, where he worked in the maintenance department for several years. AC's first wife, Maxine, preceded him in death in 1996. He is survived by his wife, Mary Louise; his stepson, Bob Haswell; a brother, Johnny Chorn, of Houston, Texas; and a nephew, Earnest Chorn, of Stockton, Mo. AC was preceded in death by his mother and father, Myrtle and Jessie Chorn; brothers, Willard and Heavy Chorn; and a sister, Sarah Virginia Blanton. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, January 19, 2007, in Walnut Lawn Funeral Home, 2001 W. Walnut Lawn. Interment will be in Patterson Cemetery in Taney County, Mo. A. C. was born April 15, 1918, and raised on a 40 acre homestead in what is now known as Hercules Glade, in the Mark Twain National Forest. They were poor but so was everyone else in those times. He often told of those days in the one-room log cabin, where he would awaken to have snow on the feather comforter that had blown in through a crack in the wall. It was a good year when dad could buy each of his kids a new pair of shoes, a pair of overalls, and a shirt. All their neighbors would herd cattle, hogs, turkeys, and sheep along those wagon trails to Chadwick to the railroad. His father and mother were Pentecostal believers, and he once told me about seeing a young lady fall under the Spirit onto a hot stove and was not burned. Following his father's death in 1933, AC and his older brother Willard were drafted into the Army where they served in the Second World War. A. C. was shipped to Iran and drove big 6X6 supply trucks from the Persian Gulf into southern Russia. He never spoke of the times when raiders would attack these supply trains, but he told of many other adventures that happened there. What a great change, in such a short time, for this young man from an Ozarks hill farm to go to the cradle of civilization where he saw Queen Esther's Palace, Daniel's Tomb, and drove a big 6X6 truck up onto the Zageroot in UR of The Caldeas. The most lasting memory was how seasick he got on the boat trip through the Tazman Sea on the way over. My stepfather taught me to hunt, fish, and enjoy nature. His mother was a full blood Cherokee Indian from Oklahoma, so he knew how to set traps and snares. One night when our boat motor failed, and left us up Beaver Creek, we slept on the ground next to a small campfire we built. The most fun we had was when I took him fishing in Canada. He caught a seven pound Northern pike on a four pound Ultra light rig. We all shall miss him, for he was a good man.
