Died at the home of his parents three miles north of Nixa of cholera infantum, Saturday July 5. 1909 at four o’clock p.m. the little son of Mr. and Mrs. Vergil Cobb, aged two years, 2 months and 23 days.  The little one was only sick a week, and had lived only long enough to make the home pleasant for the young couple, but God saw proper in his own wisdom to call it form a world of trouble to a world of joy and peace. The funeral services were held Sunday at the Richwood Cemetery conducted by Rev. J. A. Grubaugh, to a large number of relatives and friend who had gathered to pay the last tribute of respect. The remarks made by the minister were plain and impressive, and were well taken. It was very hard for the young couple to give up their only child. They have the sympathy of the entire community. May God bless the young father and mother in their sad hour of affliction.  A Friend

Sparta teen dies after drowning in Finley River

From our staff and wire services • June 8, 2010

A 16-year-old Sparta High School student died Sunday, a day after he was pulled from the Finley River, Christian County Sheriff Joey Kyle said. Chancy Cobb was with two others at the Finley River on Saturday near Riverside Inn in Ozark when he waded into the water and went under, resurfacing six or seven minutes later, Kyle said Monday. Two people kayaking nearby pulled Cobb from of the river and tried to resuscitate him. Kyle said Cobb was taken to the neuro-intensive care unit at Cox South hospital where he was placed on life support. He was pronounced dead the next day. A fund has been set up at Legacy Bank of Sparta to help the family with funeral expenses. Also over the weekend, two boys drowned during a visit to the Buffalo National River near Ponca. According to The National Park Service, 8-year-old Hunter Taylor and 12-year-old Dustin Taylor of Kingston were with five others at the Ponca Low Water Bridge on Saturday night. The Park Service says the boys' 9-year-old brother saw them in the water about 8:15 p.m. as they were trying to retrieve Hunter Taylor's swimming trunks. When they didn't resurface, the brother sought help. The Park Service says the children's stepfather and a park visitor recovered the boys from the water, and tried to revive them. The 12-year-old was pronounced dead at a Harrison hospital, and his younger brother died Sunday morning at a Missouri hospital.

Cobb, Charles William 17 Aug 1885 - 20 February 1951 CCR 29 Nov 1951

Testimony in the trial of Arthur T. Clark, Taney county farmer and building contractor, who is charged with first degree murder in the bludgeoning slaying of a neighbor, Charles William Cobb, 65, last February, 20, got underway in the circuit court of Christian county in Ozark about four o’clock Tuesday afternoon of this week. All day Monday and most of Tuesday was spent in the selection of the 12 members of the all male jury. Judge Tom R. Moore is presiding at the trial which was brought to Christian county on a change of venue from Taney county. Clark’s first trial in the Cobb murder case began last September 5, in Ozark, but was called off after three days of testimony because a member of the jury became ill. The case has been called the “mortgaged cow” murder case because Ruby Cobb, 25-year old wife of the slain man, testified that she signed a note for $600, payable to Mrs. Orma Clark, wife of the accused man, putting up two of her best cows as security for a promise to have Cobb “done away with”. Both Mrs. Cobb and Mrs. Clark have pleaded guilty as accomplices in the murder but as yet have not been sentenced. Also charged as defendants in the case are Carl Wood, 71, and his brother Clarence Wood, 68. Testimony and evidence brought forth by the prosecuting attorneys show that it was Carl Wood to whom Ruby Cobb wrote passionate love notes and claimed would marry if her husband was out of the way. The two brothers have not been tried in the case. The prosecution finished with their witnesses late Wednesday and the defense was to begin the presentation of their witnesses Thursday morning. More than capacity crowds have been jamming into the courtroom to hear the testimony in this sensational murder trial.
