Wreck Takes Life Of Ozark Youth

Edward Louis Crist, 15, Ozark was killed Saturday night when he was thrown from the bed of a pickup truck, then pinned underneath, according to the Christian County Sheriff’s Department. Officer Orville Danderson of Ozark said the vehicle, driven by George (Buster) Ellis, Jr., 17, Ozark, was traveling at a high rate of speed on an unmarked county road, east of Hwy. NN, which is better known as the old drag strip. The Highway Patrol reported that the car went through a T-shaped intersection, struck an embankment and a fence, then overturned. Joining Ellis in the cab of the pickup were Danny Ross, 17, Ozark, Billy Moore, 18, Ozark and another juvenile. Crist was the only person riding in the bed of the truck. Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Tim McCormick said late Tuesday that charges would be filed against Ellis Wednesday morning before the hearing. He said Ellis would be charged with driving under the influence of drugs, which carries the same weight as driving under the influence of alcohol. Danderson said that marijuana was found at the scene of the accident, but that it was not found in the truck. When asked exactly where it was found, he said, “No comment.” Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Tim McCormick, is handling the case. Statements were taken from each person, to be used if necessary, at the hearing, according to McCormick. There were no other serious injuries. One passenger had some teeth knocked out at impact, but his name was not released. Crist was a student at Ozark High School and a member of  the Fairview Baptist Church. Survivors include his parents, William and Roberta Bostic; two brothers, Robert Crist and W. C. Bostic; four sisters, Mrs. Jodie Biers, Cathy Bostic, Vickie Bostic, Ozark and Miss Cherrie Crist, Phoenix, Ariz.; paternal grandmother, Lucy Aaron, Ozark; and maternal grandparents, Joseph & Margaret Dodson Bishop, California. Teens die after possible drug overdoses

Nixa Police make arrests.

Nixa Police are investigating an outbreak of possible prescription drug overdoses and have arrested two individuals on drug charges suspected to have a connection to two local deaths. Dina M. Eslick, 50,  and Bret W. Turner, 20, both face distribution of controlled substance charges following two deaths from alleged prescription drug overdoses in the past month. Nixa Sgt. Jeff Romero said Eslick, also known as “Momma D,” was implicated by witness statements in the death of James D. Crow, 17. Investigators believe Crow’s death March 27 was caused by an overdose of different prescription medications and illegal drugs. “We are still waiting on the toxicology reports before an exact cause of death is determined,” Romero said. “(Nixa) Detective Jason Hartsell received several statements during his investigation implicating Eslick in the distribution of prescription medication and illegal drugs to several people, including her 16-year-old daughter.” Eslick was arrested April 2 after the Nixa Emergency Tactical Team executed a search warrant at her residence that resulted in the recovery of controlled substances. She remains in the Christian County jail on a $50,000 cash bond and is scheduled for an April 21 preliminary hearing.  “Eslick is already facing a separate charge of distribution stemming from a previous case submitted by our agency last year,” Romero said. “The investigation of Crow’s death is still ongoing.”  Turner was arrested after police began investigating April 4 the death of his 16-year-old girlfriend, Amanda R. Adkins. “(Nixa) Detective Graham Applegate investigated the death and suspected Adkins’ death was caused by an overdose of prescription medications,” Romero said. “Again, we are awaiting toxicology reports before a final determination o the exact cause of death is made. Other charges may be filed once we received the pending reports.”

Turner remains in jail under a $100,000 bond and is scheduled for an April 28 preliminary hearing. Romero said the number of incidents relating to prescription drugs are skyrocketing. “Our statistics show that problems with prescription medications have far exceeded the problems we have with illicit illegal drugs,” Romero said. “With a declining economy and moral foundation, young people seem to be turning to prescription medications, illegal drugs and alcohol at alarming rates.”  Parents can take the first active role in the fight against prescription drug abuse, Romero said. “Parents need to be vigilant in the fight for their children’s lives,” Romero said. “If you are a parent with prescription medications in your home, please, do not make it easy for children to obtain your medications.”  The law is very specific about distributing prescription medications, Romero said. “The public must also be aware that giving a controlled substance, which includes many prescription medications, to anyone else, even family members, is a crime,” he said.
