Ozark man killed during honeymoon

Robert Shikina

Honolulu Star-Bulletin

The wife of an Ozark man who died Saturday when his car plunged 140 feet off a Maui cliff said they were on the island for their honeymoon. "He's the best person in the whole world. He was my best friend," said Jill Curran by phone from the Lahaina Shores Beach Resort in Maui. "I'm here by myself." Kevin Patrick Curran, 42, was driving a 2006 Ford Mustang southbound on Honapiilani Highway in west Maui when his car left the road at a turn in the roadway and landed in the ocean 140 feet below, Maui police said. Curran was thrown from the car and landed on the shoreline, according to police. A witness called police after seeing the car underwater. Curran and his wife, Jill Curran, 43, fell in love during a trip to Oahu in 2005 and decided to spend their honeymoon in Hawaii. After marrying May 5 in Eureka Springs, Ark., the couple arrived in Maui eight days later. They surfed, snorkeled and went on a helicopter ride. Curran told his wife the helicopter ride was his best moment because she was with him, Jill Curran recalled. On Saturday afternoon, she went to buy lunch while her husband was exploring the island by car. Soon after she returned, police arrived and told her that her husband had died in a car accident. Curran, who had worked years as a surgical technician, didn't believe it and hoped her husband could be revived. "I'm in shock," she said. "I don't understand what happened." Kevin Curran worked as a lawyer for 17 years, helping abused children. "He was a guardian for abused kids. Most of the work he did for free," she said. In 2004, Curran stopped practicing law to start the company balance360.com, selling a training device he invented for surfers and people undergoing physical therapy.  Curran also was a real estate developer building a subdivision in Ozark. He served in the Navy for six years and studied law at Emory University School of Law, his wife said. "It didn't matter who, he just took care of everybody," Curran said. "I felt so lucky."  Curran donated his body parts to those who need them. "I can't believe my boy's gone," Jill Curran said. Survivors include two daughters, Suzanna, 13, and Alisha, 16.

Curran, Kevin Patrick 1964 - 19 May 2007 SN-L 24 May 2007 & CCH-N 30 May 2007

Kevin P. Curran 1964-2007 On May 19, 2007, we lost our beloved Kevin Curran in a tragic accident in Maui, Hawaii. Kevin and his loving bride, Jill Myers Curran, were there on their honeymoon following their May 5 wedding. Kevin was a wonderful, compassionate and caring husband, father, son, brother and friend who will be deeply missed. He was survived by his wife, Jill; his daughters Alisha Marie Curran, age 16, and Suzanna Rae Curran, age 13; as well as his mother, Carol Szuch; his father, Bob Curran; and his siblings Carol Austin, Rob Curran, Michael Curran, and Sharon Preston. Kevin was fiercely independent and self-sufficient. He joined the Navy immediately after high school, to explore the world on his own. An experienced world traveler, Kevin visited 48 countries during his life. Deciding during his Navy service that he wanted to become an attorney like his father, Kevin performed his full-time Navy duties while going to college and working at night. His unwavering perseverance led to his earning his bachelor's degree just as he completed his Navy service. Kevin's hard work was recognized when he earned a scholarship to attend Emory Law School. With his customary work ethic, he attended school while also working long hours. Upon graduation, Kevin moved to Missouri, and passed the bar examination. Though he initially practiced at an established law firm, it was only a short time before his independent streak led him to quit and start his own firm. His practice flourished due to his competence, professionalism, hard work, and compassion. Kevin was thrilled when the arrival of his daughters Alisha and Suzanna changed his life greatly. He was a loving, dedicated father, who spent much time with his girls. He also dearly loved their stepbrothers Bobby Sanderson and Ricky Sanderson, and they all had wonderful times traveling the world together. Kevin's fluent Spanish served them well on their many trips to Central and South America. Kevin always gave generously of himself in every way. Even after his death he continued to help others by donating his organs. On a recent trip to El Salvador, Kevin, Jill and Suzanna helped the local citizens construct a much-needed cinder block school. Much of his law practice consisted of unpaid work as a court-appointed guardian for abused children, and he did his very best to protect all of his charges, from infants to teenagers. Kevin's expanding efforts in fields other than law led to his closing his law office in 2004. To this day, former clients still call, hoping to get Kevin to represent them. Kevin's other interests included being an inventor, surfer, skier, real estate developer, painter, marketer, gardener, bodybuilder, scuba diver and entrepreneur. In 2003, Kevin met his future wife, Jill Myers. As their love grew, they became inseparable partners in everything, working together at their business ventures. Together, they refined the balance board Kevin had invented and patented, as well as jointly inventing additional fitness products, which they sold at balance360.com. Kevin was inspirational in so many ways, from his hard work, to his frequently and openly telling us that he loved us, to his defying convention in almost every way. Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, May 26 in Adams Funeral Home, Ozark. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday evening in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Greene County Humane Society. We'll all greatly miss the sight of him driving around town in his little red convertible with the top down, long blonde hair blowing in the breeze. We love and miss you. Aloha, Kevin.

Tourists discouraged from driving on Hawaii road where Ozark man died

By Christie Wilson

Honolulu Advertiser

Wailuku, Maui — A tourist from Ozark, Mo., killed last weekend when his rented convertible plunged 140 feet into the ocean near Honolua Bay was driving on a section of road that visitors are discouraged from using due to hazards that include rockfalls and steep drop-offs without guard rails. Police said Kevin P. Curran, 42, was headed toward Lahaina in a 2006 Ford Mustang when he apparently failed to negotiate a left curve at milepost 34 and plummeted into the sea at an area known as Windmills, or Punalau Beach. It is not known when the accident happened, although a passer-by who noticed the car in the water called 911 shortly after noon on May 19. Curran, who was honeymooning on Maui, was alone and not wearing a seat belt, police said. He died from “multiple traumatic injuries” primarily to his neck and chest, “but we can’t exclude the possibility that drowning played a role,” said Maui pathologist Anthony Manoukian, who performed the autopsy. Curran was thrown from the convertible as it spiraled to the left during its descent, and he apparently was injured when his body hit the vehicle in the water, Manoukian said. It’s uncertain whether seat belts would have saved him, he said. Curran’s body drifted to the shoreline, where it was found. Most car-rental companies on Maui advise customers that their contracts restrict them from traveling on Honoapi’ilani Highway past Honolua Bay. The two-lane highway, which continues on through Kahakuloa Village and into Wailuku as Kahekili Highway, was carved into Maui’s remote, rugged northern coastline and narrows to a single lane in some sections. Some portions of the highway are little more than dirt and gravel, and landslides and falling rocks are not uncommon. Pi’ilani Highway between Kipahulu and Kaupo, on the back side of Haleakala, is another stretch where rental cars are discouraged for the same reasons. An informal survey of Hertz, Budget and Dollar car-rental companies indicated that motorists are told to avoid the restricted roads, and if they ignore the warning, they are on their own as far as getting help for damage and breakdowns. It was not immediately known which company owned the car Curran was driving, or whether he was advised of restricted roads. The victim and his bride, Jill Curran, arrived on Maui on May 13 after marrying May 5 in Eureka Springs, Ark. Despite the warnings about Honoapi’ilani-Kahekili Highway, guide books, Web sites and other sources promote the coastal route’s stunning landscapes that include jagged rock formations, the Nakalele Blowhole, and Pohaku Kani, or Bell Rock, which marks the site of a natural seaside pool that has seen several deaths in recent years after visitors were swept into the ocean by waves. Other cars have gone off the cliffs along Honoapi’ilani-Kahekili Highway, parts of which are owned by the county and others by the state. On April 27, 2006, a 45-year-old man from Park Ridge, Ill., driving a rented 2005 Chrysler Sebring convertible, apparently missed a curve and dropped 300 feet onto the rocks below Kahekili Highway near Kahakuloa. In another case, a 35-year-old Napili man and a 3-year-old boy were killed Nov. 18, 2001, when their sedan went off Kahekili Highway at Makamaka’ole Gulch and plunged to the rocks below. State transportation spokesman Scott Ishikawa said officials will request police reports on the latest accident to review the need for any additional highway safety measures.
