Inmate Found dead in Christian County Jail, by Chris J. Cluck, Headliner-News
Capt. Jeremy Whitehill, Christian County Sheridd’s Department, announced in a news release June 27 that Debra Kay Presley, 49, was found dead in her cell about 1 p.m. June 26. According to information provided by Whitehill, Christian County deputies and United State Marshals arrested Presley, June 25, at the Lindenlure access on the Finley river on an outstanding federal warrant for selling amphetamine that carried no bond and a Greene County warrant for possession of a controlled substance that carried a $10,000 bond. Presley was being held in the Christian County jail on those charges. Whitehill said the death was completely unexpected. “We had no indication,” Whitehill said. “We have a list of questions we asked when (prisoners) are processed in and there weren’t any red flags.” Whitehill said that about 1 p.m. June 26 an inmate in the Christian County Jail went to see if Presley was going to recreation time. When she got to Presley’s cell, she saw her hanging from her bed with a sheet tied around her throat. The inmate then contacted the detention officer who responded to the cell and requested EMS response. According to information provided by Whitehill, the detention officer found Presley unresponsive and began CPR. Whitehill said that detention officers last say Presley at 12:15 p.m. when they collected meal trays from lunch. She was the only inmate assigned to the cell and officers found no notes or messages in the cell as to why the incident occurred, Whitehill said. “When you talk about suicide,” Whitehill said, “Our experience has been that if a subject has the intent and are resolved to do it, they’ll find a way to do it.” “Anytime we have a situation like this or when a death occurs in our facility, we have an investigation of what happened,” Whitehill said, “And we review the incident to see if there’s any need to evaluate or change our policies.” This is the second death the Christian County jail has experienced in the last 18 months. Deputies discovered Mickey Davidson, 45, unresponsive in his cell just two days after being transferred from Ozark County. His parents, Lamar and Linda Davidson, Rockaway Beach, filed a $2 million lawsuit against Taney, Ozark and Christian counties, alleging the denial of necessary treatment. “Both (deaths) were unfortunate,” Whitehill said, ”And both were completely different circumstances and different elements were involved in both deaths. I’m confident our system works.”

Tragedy struck Monday in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Davis of Springfield, formerly of Highlandville, when their son Alfred Leroy, 11, stepped into a deep-water hole in the James River and drowned before help came to his rescue. Leroy had gone fishing with his young friend Elwyn Loving, 8, and the latter’s father, Raymond. The boys were playing in the shallow water about a half-mile downstream from the bridge on Highway 123 north of Nixa. Mr. Loving set his fishing pole and climbed the bank to show a hunter where he had seen a squirrel. While gone, he heard his son call for help. Leroy had stepped into a hole made by a gravel dredge, and unable to swim went under. Greene County Sheriff Glenn Hendrix, Deputies Cecil Reed and E. W. O’Connor and volunteers tried grappling hooks and diving until the body was located near the spot where he went down. Artificial respiration failed to revive the boy, who had been under water nearly two hours. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon in Springfield, with burial in Maple Park cemetery. Leroy is survived by his parents, a sister, Helen Marie, and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. G.G. Davis of Highlandville.

Was fixing tire at rear of his car when crashed into by another car -- was son-in-law of Judge J.L. Little, western judge for Christian county.
A tire puncture indirectly caused the death of Arby E. Davis, 33, of near Clever, Mo., at 2 o’clock Sunday morning on U.S. Highway 60 about 3 miles north and east of Republic. He was fatally injured when crushed between the rear end of his own machine and the one driven by Charles F. Faulkner of Marionville. Davis was returning to his home in Clever from near Lebanon where he had been working as a night watchman on the pipeline being constructed by the Oklahoma construction company for the Ajax pipeline company. He had just gone over the top of a hill when his left rear tire went flat. Driving a short distance past a culvert, he stopped the machine with two wheels on and two off the blacktop surface of the highway. Faulkner told Dr. Murray C. Stone, who was summoned to the scene, that he was driving about 35 miles an hour when the crash occurred. He said he had not seen any tail light on Davis’ car and had not even seen the automobile or the man, who evidently was standing by the rear light to repair his tire. He explained that the sky was overcast with clouds and that visibility of objects on the black paving surface was poor. Upon climbing out of his car, Faulkner said, he found that Davis was under the front part of it. Failing to get the man out or to move the machine, Faulkner summoned help from the nearest farmhouse. A crushed chest and fractures of both arms and both legs resulted in Davis’ death soon after he was pulled from beneath the automobile. The body was taken to Republic and prepared for burial at the Thurman funeral home. The identity of the dead man was not known until the body was viewed at the undertaking establishment by his father, J.P. Davis, and sister, Miss Myrtle Davis, an instructor in Springfield Senior High School, both living near Republic, early Sunday morning. The dead man also is survived by his wife and three children, who remained in the home at Clever while he went to work on the pipeline project. Jack Hall, night marshal at Republic, reached the scene of the accident a short time after it occurred.

Death called one of Republic’s prominent pioneers at 1:40 o’clock last Wednesday afternoon in St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, when B. W. (Uncle Barney) Davis, 88, succumbed to a heart condition and infirmities of advanced years. The deceased was a native of this community. He was born on a farm in the Wise Hill District, south of this city, and spent his entire life in the vicinity of his birth. He operated a farm southeast of Republic for many years and reared his family there. Upon his retirement about 45 years ago he and his family came to this city and have since made their home on East Elm Street here. A former mayor of Republic, “Uncle Barney”, as he was known to his many friends, was a man of strong convictions and courage. He was a devout member of the Church of Christ here and had served as an elder in the church since its founding being a charter member. After moving here he did carpenter work and painting. He possessed considerable musical talent and was considered one of the area’s best old-time fiddlers. He loved the hymns of the church and enjoyed singing them very much. He was held in highest esteem by his many friends. Survivors include his widow of the home; one son, Walter Davis of Ontario, Cal., who is visiting here; six daughters, Mrs. Emmett Grey of rural Billings, Mrs. Betty Newcomb of Washington, D. C., Mrs. Hubert Edwards of Springfield, Mrs. Oren Adams of Fullerton, Cal., and Mrs. Russell Bassore of Mt.
