On Staff 25 Years  Library to Honor Ruth Davis

Caption: Ruth Davis, 25 years with the 25-year-old Christian County Library, poses with driver Gerald McGinnis beside the bookmobile, Miss Davis’ main activity at the library. The bookmobile carries and estimated 3,000 to 4,000 volumes on each tour of the county

By Joe Cody, Headliner News Editor

Next Thursday, June 11, will be “Ruth Davis Day”  at the Christian County Library, and who deserves it more. This is the library’s 25th year, and she has been on the staff for 25 years. June 1 was the silver anniversary of her joining the late Lucile Anderson, founder.

That day, June 1, 1956, was the beginning of the library as Christian County only. It had been a regional library with Stone County. It was housed in what is now the Senior Citizens’ Center on S. 1st St. just off the square. It formerly was a garment factory.

Only thing left of the library is the map on the exterior north wall. It was painted by Ozark artists, Lester and Ila Jensen and later touched up by Ron Bilyeu.

Miss Davis is easy to interview, speaking in a well-modulated voice with little trace of an Ozark accent, interspersing her answers with pleasant, slight nervous chuckles.

Her principal job is managing the bookmobile on its two-days-a-week, sometimes three trips around the county. She performs other duties as needed - checking books in and out, filing, reference services, handling overdues.

One thing the staff doesn’t do which was a regular thing in the early days, window cleaning and sweeping.

She doesn’t drive the bookmobile - she has been careful not to learn. Gerald McGinnis is the present driver. She remembers others as Ben Hart (now deceased), Bruce Riggle, Ted Thompson, Jack Hannum and Rex Wood.

Miss Davis’ family moved to Ozark from Morrisville when she was in the third grade. She’s a graduate of Ozark High School and is one of six children, A brother, J. W> Davis, lives in Chadwick. Betty Holt, a sister, lives in Spokane, Mildred Davis Murphy in Ozark. And there’s another brother and sister living elsewhere. Her parents were Adam and Lessie Davis. Her father was a carpenter and farmer.

Some telephone operators keep away from telephones as much as possible when off duty.

But, Ruth Davis likes to read, mostly fiction of all kinds - love stories, mystery, westerns.

Yet, books are far from her whole life. She likes spectator sports, goes fishing occasionally, like bowling sometimes, does needlework, maintains her own yard, has a garden and paints. Pictures? No. Around the house, the fence - whatever needs painting.

Is she looking foreward to Ruth Davis Day?

Well, a little. “I’m not much for the limelight” (Chuckle) But she was curious as to what Ruth David Day might be.

Plans hadn’t been completed last Monday by Librarian Marilyn Prosser but there’s bound to be an open house with the public invited to her remember her 25th anniversary in a special way.

She plays the piano - mostly for her own pleasure, now, In high school days, she was a poplar accompanist.

If you’ve read this far, you like Ruth Davis. If you’ve never met her, you’ll like her in person even more.

Day, Joe H. 14 Jan 1913 - 8 Jul 1933 CCR 13 Jul 1933 p1

[Note: Son of J. L. & Katy ( ) Day]

Powersite automatic gates opened without warning and rushing waters catch three boys in boat -- accident happened last Saturday evening. Three youths were drowned in White River at Forsyth early last Saturday evening when an automatic gate in the Powersite dam opened without warning and the rush of water capsized the light boar in which they were fishing under the powerhouse. Russell Keene, 17, of 421 E. Brewer St., Springfield. Ray Simmons, 21, Forsyth. Joe Day, 21, Forsyth. The accident occurred about 8:30 o'clock when an automatic switch in the powerhouse overhead opened the gate to one of the huge power wheels after the line from another wheel, which had been in use, had broken as a result of Saturday afternoon’s rainstorm. The youths apparently realized the danger when the gate slowly began to open, for one of them was seen to reach for a handhold on the dam wall above the waterline. In so doing, he upset the boat, however, according to witnesses and his two companions grabbed hold of him. The first youth’s grasp was not sufficient to hold himself and his mates and the three were carried down to death in the turbulent waters below. When word of the tragedy was flashed to the powerhouse all the gates were closed and the search for the bodies began. The bodies of the Day and Keene youths were recovered half an hour later. The Simmons youth’s body was recovered several hours later. Simmons was widely known in southwest Missouri as captain of the champion Forsyth High School basketball team in 1932 and again last winter, when his team was eliminated in the semi-finals at the meet at State Teachers College in Springfield. He was a large youth and played center on the team. He was married and had a baby girl. His wife was the former Gladys Keith of Forsyth.
