Dillard, B. A. "Bea" 3 Mar 1888 - 14 Apr 1933 CCR 20 Apr 1933 p1
[Note: Son of Jerry & Mary (Gray) Dillard]
B.A. Dillard takes own life. Body found Sunday by Ben McDaniel in old building used by Dillard for slaughter house. Had evidently shot himself twice with .22 caliber rifle. B.A. (Bea) Dillard well-liked and industrious colored citizen, who lived just northeast of the school building up Garrison hollow, according to the evidence found, took his own life sometime Friday or Saturday by shooting himself with a .22 caliber rifle. The first shot was evidently fire into his abdomen and when this failed the second was fired into the roof of his mouth, the bullet ranging upwards. Dillard was missed Saturday from his work at the Christian County Bank and the J.W. Robertson Store at which place he served as janitor, but because he had complained of not feeling well it was thought he was ill at his home. Sunday morning Ben McDaniel who had also missed Dillard passing his place Friday and Saturday became alarmed and went to the Dillard home. He failed to find anyone about the premises. An old building used by Dillard for a slaughter house is further up the hollow from where Dillard lived alone. Here Mr. McDaniel found the doors fastened on the inside but discovered that Dillard’s dog was in the building. This was a strange coincidence so Mr. McDaniel forced entrance into the building and found the body resting against the wall, cold in death, the instrument of death still clutched in his hands. A note was also found which read, “I don’t know what else to do, B.A. Dillard, Don’t blame me.” It is known that Dillard had been a sufferer of severe stomach trouble for some time and relatives and friends can conceive of no other reason for his rash act. Bea Dillard was industrious. He owned several acres where he lived and also possessed some of the bottom land just this side of Riverside Inn. As far as we can learn he owed no man, so financial worries had no place in provoking him to doing what he did. The body removed to the Chaffin Funeral Home and prepared for burial. Mr. Chaffin as coroner called together a jury Monday morning which returned a verdict of suicide. Bea Dillard was the son of Jerry and Nancy Dillard and was born and reared in Ozark. He is survived by five sisters and two brothers, Cordia Richardson, Katherine Lenore, Ranny Marley, Nancy Stinson, Emma Dillard, Guy Dillard and William Dillard, all of Springfield.

Dillard, Lucy (Short) 7 Feb 1892 - Mar 1939 CCR 16 Mar 1939 p4
[Note: Daughter of Jackson G. & Permelia (Long) Short; married 1 Jun 1911 Charles D. Dillard]
“I am the Resurrection and the Life, he that believeth in life, though he were dead, yet shall he live and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Lucy Dillard is not dead, but liveth. Lucy Short, 47, was born near Galena, in Stone county, February 7, 1892, the daughter of Jackson G. Short and Permelia Long Short. She lived all of her life in Stone county. While she was quite a young girl, her parents moved to Galena, where she attended school and grew to the age of nineteen years. She was then married to Charles D. Dillard, at the home of her parents in Galena, June 1, 1911. Mr. Dillard was then, and has since been, employed by the Missouri Pacific railroad company, and they made their home in Crane. Two boys were born to Mr. and Mrs. Dillard, Jack who married Mary Pirkle, a Crane girl, and he holds the trusted position as guard at the Federal Prison Hospital in Springfield. Joe is in the army and is now stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii, poor boy, knowing his mother was struggling with incurable disease, sent a cablegram which she received Saturday. “Keep your chin up.” She held the message to her heart which ceased to beat Tuesday morning at one thirty-five. It seemed that he sensed that his mother had taken much worse and she was not conscious much of the time afterward. Lucy had been ill for many months, all that the best surgeons and hospitals and the love of her many relatives and friends could do, had been lovingly done for her. It seemed that Lucy could not go, she must not go, so much of sunshine did she radiate from her, so much of pleasure and laughter could she create, that everyone loved her presence. Her clever impersonations, both in song and story and her natural wit set her high above any one we have ever known, with such talents. A lifelong friend of hers once heard her say, “There is never a time so serious that there does not happen something funny to laugh about.” What a philosophy in this world of care! No wonder we liked to sit with her and laugh convulsively at her witty expressions! Something has gone out of our lives and we are greatly depressed. Such is the way we feel. We are selfishly sorry for ourselves! Lucy was known for a long time that she would be going soon. Everything seemed bright to her. She was uncomplaining, as she suffered from her affliction, and begged her loved ones not to try to hold her here. She had “set her house in order.” So well prepared to go was she that her requests about all arrangements for her funeral and burial will be carefully carried out as she planned them. Lane and Manlove at Crane are to have charge of her burial. The Rev. J.W. Willis, pastor of her church, the Presbyterian at Crane, is to conduct the services at her father’s home in Galena. Harry Bruton of Seymour is to sing the songs of her selection. Her sisters and she looked at her burial dress with as little concern to Lucy as if it were a new party dress. So willing was she to go when her Lord called her that she closed her eyes and slept quietly as her soul was wafted to the other world. Surviving her, besides her husband and two sons, are brothers: W.B. Short, Bess Allman and Helen Pauly, Galena; Frances Vineyard, Crane; Theodore Short, St. Louis; Dewey Short, Washington, D.C., and Charlie Short, Baltimore, Maryland. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the J.G. Short home in Galena, with burial in the Galena cemetery-Stone County News Oracle.

He professed faith in Christ and jointed the Missionary Baptist church when about 16 years of age, remaining in that church about four years, when he joined the Cumberland Presbyterian church and remained a member until his death. He always lived a consistent christian life, His heart and hand was always open to his fellow man and to his beloved church. He enlisted in the Union army in the summer of 1861, in what was known as the Home Guard, and was in camp at Springfield, Mo. when the battle of Wilson Creek was fought. After the retreat of the Union forces, he came home for a while and enlisted in the 6th Mo. Cav., and the spring of 62 went south and remained in the army until the close of the war. He moved from Tennessee to Greene county, Mo. in the year 1837, and resided in the same neighborhood until his death. D. M. Beatie. Robert D. Dillard was an honored member of Rogersville Post, No. 200, Dept of Mo. G. A. R. at Rogersville, Mo. During the civil war, he was a true soldier, ever laboring for his country and standing up for his flag. He enlisted at Rolla in Nov. 1861 in Co. B, 6th Mo. Cav.. Vols. I am sure he enlisted as he had lived with the christian harness on. He worked in that harness all through the was. He was discharged at New Orleans in January 1865. He then returned home and resumed the accustomed habits of private life. He has lived on the old homestead ever since the war, and had always been a respected, and honored and a much beloved citizen of Green County; always a loyal citizen and a christian. When he has been removed form the battles of this life, he has gone to joins that grand army on the other side. J. M. Watts.

Mr. C. L. Dix passed away at his home in Riverdale District, on June 28th, 1899, after a lingering illness with consumption for a number of years. He was of a very hopeful disposition and clung to life with great tenacity. believing it was only a question of a short time till he would recover., But alas, after exhausting every resource of recovery within human power, on Sunday, June 25, he gave up all hope, lingering between life and death, waiting for the summons, until on Wednesday, at 11 a.m., he called his family and friends to his bedside, bade them good by, and immediately passed away, peacefully, as a little child falls asleep. The remains were taken to Springfield, to the home of his son, where the funeral services were conducted, then they were conveyed to the Brick Church Cemetery, 6 miles N. W. of the city and interred in the old family graveyard. We extend to the bereaved family the sincerest sympathy of the entire community. May the God of all grace sweetly sustain the sorrowing ones, is our prayer. A Friend.
