Dunham, Mary Alice (Frazier) 1 Aug 1866 - 16 Feb 1932 CCR 18 Feb 1932 p2

Mary Alice Frazier, first child and daughter of Elisha E. Frazier and Margaret J. Sharp, was born in Christian county near Boaz on Aug. 1, 1866. As a child she lived two years in Howell County, the remainder of her life having been spent in Christian county. Her parents returned from Howell to the neighborhood of her birth and there she grew to young womanhood. On June 4, 1890, she was united in marriage to Vernon Leroy Dunham. To this union nine children were born, who with their father survive. They are Elbert E. of Springfield; Anna B. Grubaugh of Ozark, Shirley H. of Springfield; Leslie W. and James Gordon, both of Nixa, Clarence V. of Harlan, Iowa, Jane L. home address, Ross H. Clever, and Austin R. at home. Besides these immediate relatives she is survived by 15 grandchildren and two brothers and four sisters, who are J.S. Frazier of Edna, Kan., Rev. D.S. Frazier of Licking, Mo., Mrs. Susan Holder, Mrs. Nannie Farris, Mrs. Phoebe Cobb and Mrs. Lydia Peebles, all of Clever. One grandson, a son of Mrs. Anna B. Grubaugh, had preceded her in death, this being the first break in the family circle, hers being the second. When a young woman, she made her confession in her Master and united with the Methodist church. In later years in order that she might have a church home, she moved her membership into the Christian church at Nixa, to which she was a faithful member until death. She was also one of the active members of the W.C.T.U. After her marriage to Mr. Dunham, they moved to the farm between Ozark and Nixa and there she lived for 42 years as wife and mother. Of later years she had been in rather ill health, but on Sunday, Feb. 14, she became quite ill and on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 6:30 p.m., passed away rather suddenly but quietly at the age of 65 years, 6 months and 15 days. The funeral services were held on Thursday, Feb. 18, in the afternoon at the Christian church in Nixa with Revs. Frank West of Springfield and C.S. Carpe of Republic officiating. Burial was made in the Richwood cemetery under the direction of T.B. Chaffin of Ozark.

We are told that the subject of the above obituary, who now becomes the subject of this eulogy, was a perfect daughter, wife and mother and what a monument for one to have builded in the hearts and within the minds of those who now bespeak her memory. Her name is a charmed word. Through it there rings an untold melody -- it recalls the voice of an undying affection, the laughter of little children. It brings again the ripple of the brood to rest; the lisping of the lullaby over feverish crib -- man may govern and earn the glory; and the thousand watchful night and sacrifices by which a mother purchase a hero or a poet for the state are forgotten -- not one counted, for the mothers themselves do not count them; and so, one century after another do mothers unnamed and unthanked, send forth the arrows, the suns, the storm-birds and the nightingales of time. There is nothing grander, nor more beautiful, nor more inspiring than the love of a good mother. She caresses the infant at her knee, she watches and cares for it to strength and youth and her love follows it into the world. She rejoices at its success; she weeps at its misfortunes; she stands by it in adversity -- she is the personification of love and shows the purification of the heart from self. And so we are told these things may be said of her of whom we write. Fitting and proper then indeed that the Holy Word as recorded in the 31st chapter of Proverbs, verses 10-31, should have been the text of the officiating minister at the burial rites for this departed soul. And so in loving memory of Mary Alice Frazier, the daughter and Mary Alice Dunham, the wife and mother. We close this eulogy with the poetic thought of John Milton: -- Mortals, that would follow me, Love Virtue; she alone is free; She can teach ye how to climb Higher than the sphery chime, Or if Virtue feeble were, Heaven itself would stoop to her.

AND

Dunham, Vernon Leroy 14 May 1863 - 11 Jun 1935 CCR 20 Jun 1935 p5

There are three great institutions in the affairs of men, the home, the church and the school, and it was around these that the subject of this eulogy wove his life and centered his interests. He was the father of nine children and as they came into the world to bless his home, he seemed to take renewed interest in life, building around them the protection of love, affection and devotion. He was a man who loved to serve them who loved him. He fully realized that if he were to give to his family the advantage of a properly balanced life that there should be the church and the school and so from his home he radiated his interest into these great institutions. He was not the kind of father who realizes the importance of church and school affiliation and advises that one should take an interest in them, but as a father he led his children into these institution. We would not lead you to believe that Vernon L. Dunham was selfish in his interest to these great things of life, to the neglect of his duty as a citizen. He was interested in the political and the civic life of his state, county and community, to the end that these things served and served properly the larger things in life. He we the time and space we could point to the many civic and political tasks he accomplished for the betterment of his family, his friends and his neighbors, but rather would we eulogize his acts as they effected the things he loved best. Vernon L. Dunham undoubtedly was as near a model husband, father, friend and neighbor as is possible for one to be with human weaknesses. We knew him somewhat personally, and always, no matter what our association, either social or commercial, he always entered into our discussions and considerations rather reverently. He was calm and painstaking, extremely considerate in his thoughts and acts. He was a foundation of sturdy and rugged individualism, so badly needed in the world of today. He builded the monument of his living on sacrifice and honesty. He lived to serve and love and in return be served and loved. His living was of the kind about which books might be written, and we would not have served our appointment in life had we let his life sink beneath the horizon without blazing its qualities to the world. His passing leaves a vacancy in the ranks of men, but he has given to the world a family of seven sons and two daughters who will step forward and continue the refined principles of living inculcated in them by a God fearing and devoted father. Vernon L. Dunham has builded his own monument, not only in the lives of those he loved because of parenthood, but in the hearts and minds of his friends and neighbors. And to complete this eulogy to a noble life, one rich with the essences of devoted living, we repeat the obituary as it appeared in a recent issue of this paper. Vernon L. Dunham was born in Ionia, Mich., May 14, 1863. He was the son of Thomas W. Dunham and Maria L. Dunham. When a boy five years old he came to Christian county, Mo. After living a few months near Sparta the family moved to Ozark where his father operated a blacksmith and carriage shop until the spring of 1875 when they moved to the farm four miles west where he lived until his death, Tuesday, June 11, 1935.
