Greene, Milton J. 11 Jan 1874 - 1 Aug 1929 CCR 15 Aug 1929

During the past two weeks, the kinship of the Greene and Estes families of this community has been called upon to grieve the visitation of Death in a double portion into the family circle. These visitations have taken from the community two persons who had devoted their living years in a sacrificial way to those they loved and to the community which they labored to make better. In the passing of Martha E. Estes and Milton J. Greene, he community has lost two person, who, not only had much in common in the way of kinship, but theirs was a common understanding of community needs and their ideals and aspirations for community development and community betterment were individually inspired and labored for. They seemed to understand in a mutual way the need for sincere home-loving application and the unselfish interest necessary in the community, to make the home and the community, partners to the work to be accomplished. They passing is a loss - not alone to those loved ones who grieve because of kinship ties, but the community at large will miss their leadership and their idealistic inspirations. Homes, churches, Farm clubs, and community activity of all kinds must realize a new responsibility to their individual work in order that they lives of Martha E. Estes and Milton J. Greene should not have lived in vain.

Martha E. George was born near Ozark, Missouri, on November 12th, 1853 and passed into the great Beyond on July 27th, 1929. She was married to G. M. Estes on November 21st, 1874. Besides devoting her life to the members of her own family, the mothering spirit of her life was manifest to two orphans, whom she loved and cared for as if they were her own, and also to her crown must be added the three stars which represent the lives of three grandchildren whom she cared for when their mother was taken from them. The two orphans who remember the motherly loveliness are J. A. Thompson of Springfield and Mrs. Elida Hughes of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Mrs. Estes was a devoted member of the Hopedale Baptist Church and was ever faithful to her Creator and His work her on earth.
