Man died in Oldfield hour fire Nov. 4

Chris Cluck Headliner News

A house fire claimed the life of a 70-year-old man in the early morning hours Nov. 4 in Oldfield, the cause of which remains under investigation by the state fire marshal.

Sparta and Chadwick fire districts responded to a report of a fully-involved structure first at 826 state Route T, Oldfield, at approximately 12:30 a.m. Sparta Fire Chief Jason Allen said.

“It was fully involved when we got there,” Allen said. It was paged out as fully involved when we got the call.”

The victim’s name has not been released, pending notification of the family.

Nine firefighters, two pampers and two tanker trucks responded from Sparta, Allen said and one pumper and nine firefighters from Chadwick fought the blaze.

Sparta and Chadwick firefighters spent nearly six hours at the scene, Allen said. The state fire marshal’s office was called in to investigate the cause of the blaze that Allen said he believes began in the living room.

“We look for how much damage there is,” Allen said, “and most of the damage was in the living room area and spread to the rest of the house.”

[Note: Son of Charles & Adelaide (Ducker) Gyber; married 10 May 1944 Zelpha Payne 5 Oct 1918 - 19 Sep 2003]

Harold D. Gyber, 93, of Nixa, passed away Wednesday, September 24, 2008, in his home. Born November 2, 1914, in Flagstaff, Arizona, to Adelaide Ducker and Charles Gyber, he spent his early years ranching near Flagstaff, until the family moved to Mansfield, Ohio, where he attended high school. He served his country stateside during World War II, stationed here in Springfield, Mo., at O'Reilly General Hospital. It was there he met Zelpha Payne, a civilian employee, and they were married May 10, 1944. After the war, he became a salesman in the casket manufacturing industry, working for Queen City Casket Co., Ozark Casket Co. and finally American Funeral Supply. He spent 30 plus years traveling, calling on customers and enjoying those friendships that lasted a lifetime. After retiring in 1979, he and Zelpha moved to Ft. Myers, Florida, where they spent the next 22 years fishing, golfing and making new friends. Harold was a great storyteller, a devoted family man, and a lover of nature, a man who never met a stranger. An avid hunter, fisherman and golfer, he passed his love of those sports along to his grandchildren, spending much time in their early years tutoring and instructing them in the activities he enjoyed so much. The last four years in Florida, Harold devoted himself to caring for his wife as her health failed, making her bedfast. When it became evident that he could no longer manage to care for her alone, they left the home he so loved in Ft. Myers, and moved to Nixa, Mo., to the home of their daughter. He will be remembered for his quick wit, steadfast loyalty to his friends and unwavering devotion to his family. Harold was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Charles; and his wife of 59 years, Zelpha.
