Head, Charles William 24 Apr 1920 - 9 Mar 2003 CCH-N 19 Mar 2003
[Note: Son of Loren Robert & Martha (Boner) Head; married 1952 Joyce Ellene Cams]
Charles William Head, Ozark, died peacefully in the company of his loving family March 9 at St. John's Regional Health Center, following a long and courageous battle with lymphatic cancer. Head was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. Head lived a long and rich life, having been born into relatively small means on April 24, 1920, to Loren Robert Head and Martha Boner Head in Ash Grove. He attended Ash Grove High School and later enlisted in the U.S. Army on his birthday in 1942. As a staff sergeant in the Army's 10th Armored Division, he bravely defended our country's threatened freedom against the Nazi plague of that time. His military decorations included the Purple Heart, which he received after being injured during a mission to rescue other injured soldiers. Following the war, Head toured with and managed his brother and sister-in-law's band, The Saddle Rock 'n' Rhythm, before returning to Missouri and proposing to Joyce Ellene Cams, whom he married in 1952. Head had a keen interest and ear for talent in country-western and western swing music. After their marriage, Charlie and Joyce Head traveled extensively through Kansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Nebraska for his job with Neale Construction Company, of Topeka, Kan. They settled in Everton, and later, Galena, where Head worked with the Modern Telephone Company, which later became Continental Telephone, and then GTE Telephone. He retired from GTE Telephone in 1983. The Heads moved to Ozark in 1967, where they raised their three surviving children, Kelley, Tracey, and James. The couple became active in community and civic affairs in Ozark, where Head served on an appointed committee as part of a pilot project for the state, bringing local emergency medical and ambulance services to small towns. This successful program later became the Christian County Ambulance Service. Head was a long-term member of the Ozark Rotary Club, and a long-term honored member of the Ozark Booster Club, which sponsors Ozark's annual rodeo and bull ride, and facilitated the state high school rodeo. He believed strongly in giving back to one's community, and that his participation and leadership in civic organizations, especially the Booster Club, would benefit the community more than a single individual's isolated efforts. Head is fondly remembered for his mechanical and technical aptitude and his personal philosophy that there is beauty in simplicity. He lived through the Great Depression and learned during that time that life's simple pleasures can indeed be gratifying, and that men are largely responsible for their destinies, shaped by their decisions throughout life. His common-sense approach to living could benefit many who seek answers to complex questions in a modern world. He was preceded in death by his parents; son Joel; brother Shorty Thompson; sisters Mildred Head White and Mary Margaret Head Marshall. Survivors include his wife Joyce; son James, Austin, Texas; daughters Kelley Head and Tracey Bradley; son-in-law Scott Bradley; and granddaughters Rainey and Norrie Bradley and Laura Jane Head, Ozark; sister Shirley Templeton, Phoenix, Ariz.; brother-in-law Jerry Cams, Springfield; classmate and dear friend Bud Simmons, Ash Grove; numerous nieces and nephews in California, Missouri, Tennessee, and Texas; and beloved pets Dandy, Poco, and Kay-Kay. Colonel Chaplain (retired) Dorsey Levell officiating. Burial was at the Missouri Veteran's Cemetery, Springfield, following the service.

Dr. D.F. Hedgpeth, prominent retired physician and banker of Christian county, passed away at his home in Ozark early Saturday morning, July 16, after a lingering illness. The following obituary and eulogy was read by Chas. F. Boyd at the services held Sunday afternoon at the Chaffin Funeral Home. Daniel Franklin Hedgpeth, the son of Emanuel and Laurana J. Hedgpeth, was born one mile north of Sparta, Missouri, December 4, 1862. His father died when he was only ten years old. He attended common school at Bethlehem Church near Sparta, Arno in Douglas county, MO, Henderson in Webster county and the Marionville college. He taught school for five years in Christian and Greene counties. In 1885, he entered the Missouri Medical College in St. Louis, and graduated in 1888. After his graduation he returned to Sparta and started his practice, which extended over several counties in Southwest Missouri. In 1890 he took a post graduate course in New York. In 1892 he went abroad with his brother, Doctor John Hedgpeth, and did further post graduate work in England and Germany. The untimely death of his brother, Dr. John Hedgpeth, on February 9, 1893, soon after their return from the trip to Europe, had a tremendous effect on all the future life of the deceased. The two brothers had been closely associated and the loss was hard for him to bear. Again in 1896, Doctor Hedgpeth entered medical studies in the Chicago Medical College. He was married to Bertha L. DeBrunner in April 1898. To this union one son was born, John Fredrick. Dr. Hedgpeth was elected County Clerk of Christian County, Missouri, in the November election of 1902, which office he held for a term of four years. After his election as County Clerk he moved to Ozark, MO, where he continued to live until his death. He served as Christian County Health Officer for fourteen years. In 1908 he became cashier of the Ozark Savings Bank, a position he held until he became ill on July 24, 1935. The reading of the above statement of the life of Doctor Hedgpeth suggests to me, and I am certain it does to everyone, that a very busy life has ended. An orphan, because of the death of his father, he was compelled to make his own way in life, along with his brother, whose name was suggested in the brief statement of his life, and whose friendship and love he valued so highly. He made his way through school, not at home as would be possible for most boys today, but by chance catches at a church near home and in many places in other localities. His early education was truly one of struggle and ambition. His success was very apparent. At the early age of twenty-six years, he graduated in medicine and begun his work as a practicing physician in his childhood home town. He did not content himself with being a licensed physician, but continued his educational research in great schools, not only in his native land, but in foreign lands as well. Testimony of people who know gives to Dr. Hedgpeth credit for being not an ordinary practicing physician, but a man of very extraordinary ability in his chose field of endeavor. Unavoidable events in the life of men cause us often to take different courses in life to that originally planned, and that seems to have been the case of Dr. Hedgpeth. The early and tragic death of his beloved brother had a profound influence upon his life and may have changed its course very materially. Dr. Hedgpeth was a friend to man. In the truest sense he made himself a friend that could be appreciated. As a teacher he spent five earnest years instructing young people in the ways of right and wrong living. As a doctor he was conscientious, honest and proficient, and many of the older people will recall that he and his skill were greatly in demand and greatly needed. As County Health Officer, his opportunity to help those unable to help themselves was great and one he had appreciated greatly, I can speak from personal knowledge of his work in this field. Many times he has put himself out physically, when not able to do so, to help some poor person not able to help themselves. In his work as a banker few men in this community will think of Dr. Hedgpeth as anything but a good friend. His opportunities there for service were many and he gladly accepted his responsibilities and helped many of his fellow men. Doctor Hedgepeth was a man in whom a friend could repose the greatest confidence and trust. To have such a friend is one of the highest delights; to be a friend is one of the noblest and most difficult undertakings. Friendships depend not upon fancy, imagination or sentiment, but upon character. There is no man so poor that he is not rich if he has a friend; there is no one so rich that he is not poor without a friend. Real friendship is abiding. Like charity, it suffereth long and is kind. Like love it vaunteth not itself but pursues the even tenor of its ways, unfrightened by ill report, loyal in adversity, the solvent of infelicity, the shining jewel of happy days. Friendship has not the iridescent joys of love, though it is closer than is often known to the highest truest love. Its heights are ever serene, its valleys know few clouds. To aspire to friendship one must cultivate a capacity for faithful affection, a beautiful disinterestedness, a clear discernment. Friendship is a gift, but it is also an acquirement. It is like the rope which climbers in the mountains use to bind themselves for safety, and only a coward cuts the rope when a comrade is in danger. From Cicero to Emerson, and long before Cicero, and forever after Emerson, the praises of friendship have been set forth. Even fragments of friendship are precious and to be treasured. But to have a whole, real friend is the greatest of earth’s gifts save one. To be a whole real friend is worthy of high endeavor, for faith, truth, courage and loyalty bring one close to the Kingdom of Heaven. To my mind the little poem by Sam Walter Foss, “Let Me Live in a House by the Side of the Road,” suits this occasion and the life he lived. “To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.” Rev. Corum officiated at the services and burial was in the Ozark Cemetery under the direction of T.B. Chaffin.
