Roy Hodges Killed

Roy Hodges who formerly lived here was instantly killed, Sunday, May 1st. The following account was taken from the Douglas county Herald.  Roy “Lefty” Hodges, 33 years old, barber and widely known southwest Missouri amateur baseball pitcher, was killed almost instantly Sunday morning about 8:30 o’clock just after he had successfully ridden an unbroken horse on North Campbell avenue in Springfield. Hodges had quite a reputation as a “bronco buster” and last fall won the bucking horse rider contest at the Ozark, Mo. Rodeo. Hodges had put on a riding exhibition at a livery stable on North Campbell street Sunday morning and was riding the horse down West Pacific street. The horse shied at an automobile, jumped and fell to the pavement. Hodges left the saddle as the horse was falling, and it is thought one of his spurs caught in the stirrup strap, causing him to land on the pavement on hid head and right shoulder. His skull was fractured his jaw broken and his shoulder crushed when he struck the pavement. He was rushed to the hospital, but died a few moments later without regaining consciousness. Until just recently, Hodges resided in Ava, having been employed in one of the local barber shops for several months, He had quite a reputation as an amateur baseball pitcher, having pitched one season for the Ozark team in the White Rive League. Last season, he played with the Ava team and won several games. He is survived by his wife and two children, Harold, 6 years old and Wanda, 3; his father, W. P. Hodges, Protem, Mo; four brothers, Frank Hodges, Ava, Mo.; Pierce Hodges, Warden, Mont.; Ralph Hodges, Toledo, Mo. and Forest Hodges, Springfield, Mo.; four sisters, Mrs. I. C. Martin, Springfield, Mo.; Mrs. Martha Wolf, Protem, Mo.; Mrs. T. L. Pyles and Mrs. C. E. Hampton, both of Wyoming.

He was a noble Christian, and honest, upright citizen, a kind and helpful neighbor and a devoted husband and father. His jovial, cheerful disposition won for him many friends, both young and old. Smith of Rogersville and Mrs. Belle Humphries, of Springfield and a host of other relatives and friends. I cannot say, and I will not say That he is dead. He is just away. With a cheery smile, and wave of the hand He has wandered into an unknown land. And left us dreaming how very fair It needs must be since he lingers there, And you, oh you, who the wildest yearn For the old-time step and the glad return. Think of him faring on, as dear In the love of there, as the love of here. Think of him still as the same, I say He is not dead -- he is just away.
