John L. Hanks, the son of Rev. Thomas Hanks and Nancy Hanks, was born in
Murray County, Tennessee, October 12, 1856. His parents moved to Greene county, Missouri, when he was a small boy. Later they moved to Christian county, Missouri, when he was a small boy. Later they moved to Christian county where he spent his entire life until his sudden death on Saturday afternoon, March 25, 1939, at the age of 80 years. In 1880 he was married to Ellen Clapp Day, who preceded him in death exactly 28 years. To this union were born two children, Thomas Hanks of the home and Iza Beamon of Sparta. Other survivors include two brothers, Albert and Paul Hanks, and one sister, Tolitha Garrison, five granddaughters, four great grandsons and a host of other relatives and friends. He gave his heart to Christ when he was a young man and joined the Prospect Baptist church. Over 40 years ago he was ordained a deacon in this church. Death, the unconquerable foe of all mankind, has taken “Uncle Johnny”, as he was familiarly known. He lost his eyesight several years ago but he bore his affliction with patience. Many times he expressed his readiness to go forward to the Light of a New Day. A poet says: “Isn’t it funny that princes and kings and clowns who caper in sawdust rings, and even folks like you and me, are builders for eternity, and each is given a kit of tools, a shapeless mass and a book of rules, and each must make, ere life is done, a stumbling block or a stepping stone.” In the community he has built stepping stones of loving deeds and thoughts of others, which mount into the blue of the skies above, the pinnacle of which beckons others to a life of such likeness. Funeral services were held Monday, March 27, at 2:30 pm in the Prospect Baptist church, with Rev. Ross Carter officiating. Interment was made in the Prospect cemetery under direction of T.B. Chaffin.

Once more death has claimed a precious mother, loving life and devoted christian, Mrs. Rosa E. Hanks who departed this life to joint the hosts in Heaven on Feb. 29, 1904. She is gone but nor forgotten, Rosa E. Hanks was born Aug. 4th 1880 and was at her death 24 years, 6 months and 25 days of age. Rosa was converted and joined the Prospect Baptist church some two years ago and had lived a consistent christian life. She was the wife of Shirley B. Hanks and the mother of two children, Imogene, two years old and Eula Pearl, five months old. who mourn her. May the good Lord prepare tender loving hearts to care for these dear babies. But they shall never know a mother’s love, add receive the kind consideration that she would have given them. But it has pleased the God whom she served to take her to that home of the good, as she truly said, there was a better place for her and she longed to go there, where she may rest from her labors and her works may follow her. May the tidal wave of influence which she had set in motion turn many from the treacherous shore of destruction to the better way. May the Lord strengthen and comfort all the bereaved, I love to feel that in the heavens above the angels whispering to one another can find among their burning words of love no name so beautiful as that of mother. Little children are left to a father’s care Wending to the soul’s bright home We will give him the help of a brother’s prayer Going to the Soul’s bright home. Her Pastor, J. J. Parten.

Hanks, Thomas 15 Mar 1816 - 2 Oct 1899 CCR 12 Oct 1899
[Note: married Nancy Goad; married Sarah Ann Brown 8 Feb 1831 - 2 Jan 1896]
In memory of Elder. Thos. Hanks, who died at his home in Pembina, Mo. October 3d, 1899 at 2:30 p.m. and was buried the day following at the Kelley graveyard, with Masonic honors. Religious services were conducted by the writer, assisted by Wm. Gray and Elder Joe Smith. Bro. Hanks was a native of Tennessee, but came to Missouri in an early day and settled on Bull Creek in what was then Taney County. He was born March 15th, 1816 and was 83 years, 6 months and 17 days old when he died. He was twice married and was the father of nineteen children, most of whom are living, and are all honorable christian men and women. Bro. Hanks was first married to Nancy Goad, and there were fourteen children as a result of this marriage. He was married the second time to Miss Sarah Ann Brown, who preceded him to the grave about three years. He was a Mason for more than forty-five years; a member of the Baptist church for seventy years, having been converted in his fourteenth year and at once united with the church and lived a devoted christian life until death. His daily walk and heavenly conversation were such that all might take knowledge of him that he had been with Jesus and demonstrated the fact that there is a glorious reality in the religion of the Bible. He seemed ever trying to obey the command of Christ. “Let your light shine before men, that others seeing your good works may glorify your Father, which is in Heaven.” He was devoted husband, a loving father, a kind neighbor, a good citizen, a consistent christian and a faithful minister of the gospel and died in the triumphs of a living faith, assuring his children and those who stood around his bed that the way was clear and bright. He was ordained to the full work of the ministry Dec. 14th, 1857 in the church of his own dwelling house on Bull Creek, but had been preaching for two or three years before. So he has been in the ministry for forty-five years and his labors have been wonderfully blessed both in winning souls to Christ and in encouraging christian soldiers in the warfare of. His work in the ministry was without remuneration or compensation mostly so far as this world’s goods are concerned. He labored in the school room and on the farm for a support for himself and his family, and went forth preaching the gospel at his own expense. But now he rests from his labors and his works to follow him and while we have lost so much in his death, he has gained heaven. So we meekly bow to the will of God and say good by for a while to Uncle Thomas Hanks, By the grace of God, we will meet you where parting will be no more - J. W. Smallin

The men who were digging the grave were late in finishing it as they desired to attend the funeral exercises and requested that privilege. Their request was granted and the time for beginning the services was delayed about thirty minutes so they could attend. The services were commenced when the corpse was brought just inside the church door by Mrs. Dewitt Leonard playing a funeral march while the casket was taken to the customary place, the pall bearers going in front. Then two appropriate songs were sung, reading of the 23rd Psalm, prayer by Rev. Geren, another song and then Rev. Baucom arose and announced his text which was taken from Paul’s letter to Timothy, a part of which follows: “ I have fought a good fight, my race is run, I have kept the faith, &c. The opportunity for a preacher to make a good impression could not have been improved. The whole of Tommie Hanks’ life of over sixty-one years has been spent in Christian county and he was appropriately known for his conscientious actions in dealing with his fellowman and his untiring devotion to his calling and urging people to become Christians and live so that when they are called over the River they would not tread the Wine press alone. His conception of life was to do the will of his Master and leave everything in His hands and be ready at all times to answer the summons to come up higher, “Here I am, Lord” Rev. Baucom has lived his three score and ten years. He is not strong physically, but his age, his long years of service in the pulpit, his living so many years among the people here, his individual experiences, his hard study for years, his information of the Bible and his ability to tell in a force way what he knows and feels also his long and intimate acquaintance with the Hanks family and the strongest ties of friendship existing between them made the occasion more than an ordinary one. He began his talk in the customary way which is deliberate, positive and forceful, He made a splendid effort in generalizing and explaining Paul’s writing to Timothy and held the rapt attention of the entire audience during that part of the talk. But when he began talking of the long and intimate acquaintance, of his friendship and the ties that so strongly bound him and Tommie Hanks together, and of the virtues of the deceased, the loss to his family, friends, neighborhood and the church and advised his hearers to emulate the life of Tommie Hanks, there were few dry eyes there. The talk by Rev. Baucom was beyond description in effect for the audience knew what he said was true and that it come from the depths of the speaker’s heart and the audience being in sympathy with the speaker, his words reached their hearts easily. :The silver cord was loosed, the golden bowl broken and Tommie Hanks had gone to his long home - Contributed.

Man Died in Nixa crash, from our staff
A 24-year-old Marshfield man was killed July 19 when his Chevrolet Cavalier rolled into a concrete ditch next to Price Cutter in Nixa. “It appeared that speed was a factor in the accident,” Corp. Joe Campbell, the investigating officers for the Nixa Police Department, said. “The vehicle was attempting to come around the building at a high rate of speed.” James Allen Hanna was pronounced dead at the scene when emergency responders arrived at the single-vehicle accident. Campbell said Hanna was not wearing a seat belt. The early afternoon accident had several witnesses, officers said, some of which were visibly shaken. Witnesses also told police that a man fled the crash. Christopher Edward Stark, a passenger in the vehicle, was apprehended later that day and arrested on two outstanding warrants, driving while intoxicated and driving with a revoked license. He was not driving at the time of the accident, Campbell said.
