Hartley, Glenna Frances 24 Jun 1932 - 31 Oct 1933 CCR 2 Nov 1933 p1
Just as a sunbeam flits across your eyes and awakens you from your pleasant dream; or perhaps as a beautiful butterfly comes into your garden of roses, and then is lost among the branches of the overhanging bough, so came the life of Little Glenna Frances Hartley, to live but a few short months and then disappear into the overhanging branches of the Unknown. How quickly does a dream of happiness often turn into remembrance of sadness. We have seen the dawn of a glorious day, when the sun casts its rising rays over the fleecy clouds, changing them into ribbons of golden hue, only to turn and see the huge dark cloud of the approaching storm to blight the hopes of a perfect day. And so with Little Glenna Frances Hartley. She came as a messenger of joy and happiness and just as the fond parents and relatives were living in the ecstasy of a baby’s embrace there arose that dark cloud of discouragement and the little life was despaired of. But though her visit had been short those who mourn have a beautiful treasure to possess until eternity--the realization that the sacredness of parenthood has been theirs. To have the warmth of a baby’s hand and heard it’s feeble cry. These speak to hearts that understand as the voice of an angel quiets the anxiety of a prepared soul. And so at evening hour, when as a community we gather about our firesides, with the stillness of the approaching night, there creeps over us the realization that the essence of brotherly love touches the souls of all and we mourn with those who mourn and weep with those who weep.--J.M.P.

Sunday crash. Hazel Harley of Ozark and Miss Flo Keltner of Nixa die of injuries sustained in smash-up at intersection of Campbell street and Sunshine Drive south of Springfield. An automobile collision at the corner of Campbell and Sunshine, which proved fatal to two Christian county women and injured four other persons at 10:15 a.m. Sunday, “undoubtedly was caused by a car being driven too fast,” Dr. Charles A. George, Greene County coroner, believed Tuesday. An inquest into the deaths of Miss Hazel Hartley, 36, of Ozark and Miss Flo Keltner, 55, of Nixa, was held Monday afternoon at Floyd Fox Funeral home. The two women were riding in a car driven by Miss Hartley’s brother, Paul, and occupied also by Mrs. Leona Edwards, 60, a widow, of Nixa. Mrs. Edwards was a sister of Miss Keltner and an aunt of Miss Hartley, who was an Ozark school teacher. Young Hartley’s automobile was hit broadside by a machine driven by Glenn E. Hooper and occupied also by Larry B. Geringer, both of Galloway. Hooper’s car was traveling west on Sunshine, the other northward on Campbell. Hartley said he stopped at the intersection. The car occupied by the Christian county people made several revolutions and stopped 30 feet from where it was hit. The women who died, riding in the rear seat suffered skull fractures. Miss Keltner died at 4 o’clock Sunday afternoon, Miss Hartley an hour later. Hartley was treated at Springfield Baptist hospital for cuts and bruises and was dismissed. Mrs. Edwards still was there Tuesday. Extent of her injuries had not been determined late that morning but a physician said she was not in a serious condition. The Galloway men were treated for slight injuries at St. John’s hospital and did not remain there. When the tragic smash-up occurred, the party from Christian county was headed for the home of Mrs. Emily Murphy, 1242 North Robberson Avenue, to attend Christ Delphia religious services, which are frequently held there. Miss Hartley was a daughter of Probate Judge Jacob Hartley, of Ozark, and was formerly a teacher at Pepperdine school here. For the past four years, she had taught primary grades in the Ozark public schools. Also surviving Miss Hartley are her mother, five brothers, Ralph, John, Paul, Howard, and Harold, all of Ozark, and a sister, Miss Ethel Hartley, of Eldorado Springs, MO. Miss Keltner is survived by two sisters besides Mrs. Edwards. They are Mrs. Purd Hays, wife of an Ozark attorney, and Mrs. W.B. Wasson, wife of a prominent Nixa physician. Funeral services for Miss Hartley were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday under direction of Chaffin Funeral Home of Ozark, followed by burial in Ozark City cemetery. Miss Keltner’s funeral is to be directed by Maples Funeral at Nixa and burial is to be in Payne cemetery there. The funeral probably will be held today, Thursday.
