'Ozark Jubilee' guitarist Haworth dies at 85, By Sony Hocklander

Herschel "Speedy" Haworth Jr. --guitarist, singer and by many accounts one of the greatest sidemen to come out of southwest Missouri --died at 12:50 a.m. Tuesday in his home. He was 85. His wife, Wanna Fay, and daughter, Shirley Jean Haworth, were at his side. "A big part of my life has ended. My guitar player is gone," said Shirley Jean Haworth, who performed with her dad. Speedy Haworth is remembered by many for playing lead guitar on "Ozark Jubilee," a nationally televised country music show produced in Springfield between 1955 and 1960. Her father was a rare talent when it came to the guitar, Haworth said: "It was as smooth as it could be. It always sounded like angels playing with velvet fingers." Musician Mike Breid of Eureka Springs, Ark., figures the loss this way: "There must have been a big jam session in the great beyond when someone said, 'We need a guitar player. Someone get Speedy.'" Breid was 8 or 9 years old when he performed on "The Slim Wilson Show," which aired for 11 years on KYTV starting in 1964. Haworth, whose mother was known as singer Aunt Martha, was music director for the show named after his uncle. Breid was one of the last musicians to perform with Haworth, along with Shirley Jean and Jeanie Bryant. They played at an old church in Cave Springs in March for a show recorded by BlueHighways TV in Nashville. The show has not yet aired. "Everything I ever learned about being a musician on stage, I learned from Speedy," said Breid, known as Arkansas Red Ozark Troubadour. After "Ozark Jubilee," Haworth toured with show host Red Foley's band. Haworth was also part of the original Porter Wagoner Trio which saw a top-10 hit, "Company's Comin,'" and a No. 1 hit, "A Satisfied Mind." The late Wagoner might not have been noticed without the original sound that included Haworth, said Leroy Van Dyke, the last country recording artist Haworth toured with before retiring. Van Dyke, who met Haworth during "Ozark Jubilee," said Haworth could play anything, and play it clean. "You could not lose him. He knew where the song was going to go before you even started it," said Van Dyke. Haworth was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease around 2001 --and was supposedly "retired" — but he continued to perform regularly at smaller venues until he broke his hip a year ago. When word got out through a News-Leader column that Haworth was ill, he received more than 500 cards and letters from around the world, said Wanna Fay, his wife of nearly 66 years. "He loved everybody and he never said anything bad about anybody. He never criticized anybody," she said. In the past few years, Haworth sang more gospel music. In 1990, he joined Jan and Charles Lee to form the Goodwill Trio, named after his family's group. They played in churches and for senior citizens, Jan Lee said. "And everywhere we went, people knew Speedy Haworth. He was just a staple for the Ozarks." Jim Luttrell worked with Haworth on "The Slim Wilson Show" and again in the last four years. In between, Luttrell performed regularly with the Presleys in Branson. Performing with his friend these last few years, he said, "were some of the best times of my life. And I've been a musician for 69 years. "I will miss him as long as God lets me have a memory."

In Memory

In loving memory of our dear little daughter and sister, Lizzie Hayes who passed away sixteen years ago today, February 7, 1910. Sweet little darling, light of our home, Bright as the sunshine, pure as the dew. Her merry laugh no more we hear. The voice we loved is still. And all that is left in this world For us is a little grave to view, But sometime some day our eyes Shall see the face we loved so well Some day our hand shall press in hers and never say farewell.  Sadly missed by mother and brother.
