James, Luther, Judge 1861 - Mar 1930 CCR 20 Mar 1930

Fray, who was sentenced to electric chair, hangs self --Judge, who was discussing case, dies of heart failure -- Fray was well known here.

Tragedy began and tragedy ended the episode in which Charles Fray, formerly of this city and well known here, has figured in Oklahoman. While on a jealous rampage, Fray murdered two former wives and had been sentenced to the electric chair as payment for the crime he committed. This week more tragedy was injected into the case when Fray, despairing of leniency, hanged himself in his cell with a bed sheet and the judge who had sentenced him dropped dead of heart failure while discussing the case in his court room. The following dispatch taken from the papers late last week and under a Tulsa dateline tells the story: TULSA, March 13 -- A judge who sentenced a prisoner to die and the prisoner who defeated the sentence by hanging himself in his death cell were together Thursday in death. Charles Fray, convicted of murdering his second wife, Lucille, hanged himself Wednesday with a bed sheet in the room where he awaited a march to the electric chair. Later, Judge Luther James, senior member of the Tulsa county district court, who fixed Fray’s penalty, was discussing the prisoner’s suicide with a group of men in his office. Suddenly he clutched his breast and fell forward, dead. Physicians said the jurist, who was 68 years old and was known here as the “nemesis of criminals” died of heart disease.

Martha James Quits after 41 Years “I’m leaving While I’m Still Wanted”, By Eldena Bilyeu

Mrs. Martha James sat in her Developmental Reading Room at Ozark High School, talking of her retirement and reminiscing about the past 41 years she had been teaching. Her smile came easy and often as she looked through pictures of her students. “I want to leave while I’m still wanted,” she said. “There is an old saying that if you give a teacher a dollar, she will spend half of it on something beautiful but impractical. I’m going to buy flowers and help my husband Carl plant them in the year and do all those things I’ve never had time for,” she added. They live on McCracken Road in the house where she was born. Their son, Richard, lives with his family in Fairfax, Va. Elder Ephraim Wray, Mrs. James’ great grandfather, was the first pastor of the Baptist church in Ozark. Her grandfather, W. J. Wray, was also a minister and her grandmother Wray was a teacher. Her father, John Wray, owned a hardware store in town, while her mother, Bessie, taught in the Ozark school system. Mrs. Wray also taught at the School of the Ozarks the year it opened. “Much emphasis was placed on learning in our home, and my parents through I was hopeless.” remembered Mrs. James, “I had long, stringy hair and was the ugliest child you would ever see. I hated school and cried every day. The only thing I learned the first two years of school was “The Little Red Hen.” Finally, at the end of another tutoring session, my exasperated mother discovered I was seeing double. The next day, I had a pair of glasses and things began to get better. I think this is the reason I went into learning disabilities in 1964. I understand I had a problem too. There usually is a reason for a child not learning. Mrs. James has seen a complete circle in clothing styles, teaching techniques and attitudes. “We really are returning to basics in many ways.” She feels the single most important influence is the child’s life in a home. The home sets the pattern, and then the teacher can build on it and enhance it. She said she was grateful to the 1938 board members, D. C. Leonard and Ralph Hartley, along with Supt, Chester Parker for taking a chance on her. She wanted to thank Clyde McConnell for putting up with her and asking her to return on three occasions when she had to leave. She appreciated the present faculty for making her feel needed. She also wanted to thank the parents for tolerating her mistakes over the years and, of course, thanks to the students who’ve made it worthwhile. As teachers and students popped in and out, exchanging pleasantries, it was obvious that this was not an ordinary room. More than math and reading problems have been solved here, because this was not an ordinary lady. Mrs. James has taught our children well over the years. The community wants for her the best in her retirement and thanks her for the challenge she has left us by her shining example.

Scholarship Being Formed

A scholarship fund honoring retiring teacher Martha James is being founded. The 1979 winner who can use the proceeds at the school of his or her choice, will be announced at the Senior Assembly at 9:30 a.m. May 22. Persons desiring to give to the fund may left at the Christian county National Ban or the Ozark Bank. Drury College or Southwest Missouri State University will match the total given, a spokesman for the fund said.

What They Think of Her . . .

From students, former students and administrators, here’s what they think of Martha James:  In 1948, Mrs. James was already aware that second graders read at different levels and there was a need for different reading groups.  Phyllis Hilton Morton, 1959 graduate.  The think that amazed us third graders was when Mrs. James would pull a stem out of her apple and split it down the middle with her thumbs. I still can’t do that.  Julie Major Ellison 1974 graduate.  Martha James was an excellent teacher, always willing to go that extra mile for her students,  Clyde McConnell, Former Ozark Superintendent.  My mother had to return to the school four times when they split up our room in the middle of the year. I thought my world had ended when they took me out of Mrs. James room. Myron Grubaugh 1974 graduate.  My parents and I appreciate very much the help you, along with Mr. Edwards, gave me when I first come to Ozark High School. You even had the patience to help me even though we had a lot of trouble understanding each other. Anyway, I thank you for everything and may God bless you.  Jack C. Archer 1979 graduate (Archer came to Ozark from Mexico, Central America)  Mrs. James went far beyond the call of duty on so many occasions. No one will ever know all the good things she has done for her students.  Nancy Kissee 1949 graduate.    My daughter Jenny would not have passed the first grade if Mrs. James had not brought her work to her when she had to miss 5 months of school due to illness.  Syble Major 1951 graduate  What can you say about a woman who can do just about anything. Everything from helping with math tests to helping us get out drivers license, to helping us get out of trouble with the office! What can we say but we love you and thank you.  Jane Hanks Sears 1949 graduate.  The faculty and I hate to see her leave. She is one of a kind. Mrs. James has truly made a valuable contribution over the years.  Jordan Needham, Supt. of Ozark School  Martha James is extra special. She is respected by adults for her outstanding teaching ability. Children give her the same respect because she is compassionate and aware of their needs.  Joe Major Former Board  member

Martha James Reception “It was Kind of Like a Reunion”

“It was Kind of like a reunion” . . . Mrs. Chlorene Hedgpeth And that’s the way it was for Mrs. Martha James, remedial specialist closing out 41 years of leaching, all but three in Ozark; a steady trail of well-wishers, mostly students of the past , , , or their parents . . . or both . . . dropped in last Thursday afternoon to reminisce and to wish her well. Some were present students. But the students would have the next day to drop in and eat cookies and drink punch. Thursday was such as Kim Nguyen went on to School of the Ozarks. She learned English from Mrs. James. And Valerie Bilyeu, a junior, whose mother, Mrs. Ron (Eldena) Bilyeu, did such a beautiful job writing the interview for the Headliner and quoting students both past and present, on Martha James the teacher and Martha James the person. “Val”, her mother said, “went to Mrs. James for help on her math. At first, she was embarrassed. Now, she’s proud to be known as one of her students.” Val was at the reception desk along with former students, Jenny Gregg and Julie Ellison and Syble (Mrs. Joe) Major. Naturally gracious, Mrs. James spent part of the afternoon moving about and conversing. And part of it at the memorabilia table, explaining items to guests. It was piled with yearbooks and scrapbooks and on the wall were photos and drawings of Mrs. James and posters expressing loving sentiment. the drawings from teacher Anne Lindsey’s art class, were by students working form photographs taken by Michelle Crain, not much bigger than the camera dangling from her neck. The posters were lettered by art students. Clyde Heldenbrand, the youngster left almost helpless by an accident almost a year ago, was there in a wheelchair, brought by his father, Clyde, Sr. It was only Clyde, Jr.’s second visit to the school since the crash that could have killed him. Neal Grubaugh was there telling that he was Mrs. James’ pupil when he was in the first grade. But before anyone could say that she certainly didn’t look her age, he admitted he was joking by about 10 years. And look her age, whatever it is, she certainly didn’t. Martha James could be called a radiant redhead except that it would embarrass her. “Mrs. Patty (Gary) McDaniel said, “She was like a second mama to me.” Mrs. James had some jokes of her own, like the one about the Ozark couple (who will be nameless here) who were high school sweethearts and spent a lot of time holding hands (in the old building) on the stairs between the upper and lower halls, :If a teacher was coming from upstairs, they would hold hands on the down. If they were coming form downstairs, they would hold hands on the up. That way, they could hide by holding up their other hand.” “I could blackmail half of the town of Ozark.” she joked. Although she had taught English to a Vietnamese, she doesn’t know Vietnamese language. That’s the best thing. “Vietnamese pupils who learn English from Vietnamese teachers who know English almost always go back to their own language. What will Mrs. James do in her retirement? Like most facing that, she will do things she has never had time to do. “I hope to walk to my own drumbeat instead of someone else’s.” If she listens to most retirees, she will probably be happiest doing what she’s always done - Martha James, you’ll see

Jarecke, Dennis, Sr. 23 Mar 1950 - 25 Dec 2010 SN-L 2 Jan 2011 & CCH-N 5 Jan 2011

[Note: Son of Wesley Raymond & Bonna Dele (Polley) Jarecke; married Iris Joiner]

Dennis Jarecke Sr. passed away December 25, 2010 in his home in Lawson, Missouri. He died of a thrombosis of his left coronary artery. He was born in Lawrence, Kansas March 23, 1950 and was 60 years old. As a young boy, Dennis and his younger sister Diane were best friends and played together constantly, in Monett, but especially on their grandpa and grandma Polley's farm in Ozark. They played in the hay stack, in the barn, and ran through the corn fields chasing each other. Dennis also loved visiting his grandpa Jarecke at his Texaco gas station in Ozark and still has a love of Texaco memorabilia. Dennis' favorite novel was "To Kill A Mockingbird" and he truly felt he was Jem and Diane was Scout and they had lived that languid and tranquil life with each other as they grew. They talked about the book often and it brought them closer together as brother and sister. Dennis was raised up as a Christian but fell away from the church as a young man. One evening while living in Springfield he borrowed a large telescope and looked at God's glorious heavens. That very night caused a profound change in him and as he looked into the night sky he realized how much God loved him and how much he loved and worshiped God. He immediately put away his childish things, returned to church and began reading the Holy Bible and many religious books. He witnessed his beliefs to many people for the rest of his life and never had doubts or anger for the way his life worked out. His wife Iris had anger and doubts at times and Dennis was very loving and patient with her, telling her over and over how much God was with her and how God loved her. He encouraged her to read the Bible and talk to God and he gave her many books to read to encourage her faith. His patient goodness truly helped her to get back to the Bible and prayer. When his son Dennis moved in with Dennis and Iris, Dennis found a Christian school which helped his son know the Lord. Dennis had a brilliant mind and had many interests including astronomy, tree farming, planting wild life bundles and thousands of trees and bushes for wild life protection. He and Iris also loved hiking and camping at their pond on their land. He loved the country and when he was well he was out on the land 365 days a year regardless of weather. While in his early fifties he was diagnosed at KU medical center with a rare bone disease called Forestier's (DISH). According to his rheumatologist his disease is so rare that no research is being done. The only treatment was pain control. As his disease advanced, Dennis found it impossible to work in his profession, first as a poison center specialist at KU medical center and later as a pharmacist at various pharmacies north of Kansas City. Due to his Forestier's disease he finally had to retire as he no longer could stand more than a few minutes at a time. As his disease progressed his pain increased dramatically and he was no longer able to walk without crutches or walker on his beloved farm. Toward the end of his life, Dennis was inside most of the time, only leaving to go to his doctor or his pharmacy. When he was able he would go to a hardware store and walk the aisles, sitting down on his walker and reading brochures for equipment or just looking at things at a super-center. His curiosity and interests never left. He was a much loved husband who loved his wife and family very much and took care of Iris to the best of his ability. He will be missed by his family and friends. Survivors include his wife, Iris, of Lawson, Mo.; mother, Bonna Jarecke, of Ozark, Missouri; sister, Diane (Jim) Scott, of Ozark; son, Dennis (Susan), of Cleveland, Ohio; three grandchildren, Sara, Emily, and Kiera, of Cleveland; brothers-in-law, Jim (Georgia), of Youngsville, North Carolina and Merle Robert Joiner, of Chicago, Illinois; nieces, Marla (Dave) DeNicolais, of Youngsville, North Carolina, Alan (Donna) Joiner, of Hawaii Kera (Jason) Nadler, of Leawood, Kansas, and Alicia Scott, of Springfield, Missouri; and numerous other relatives in southwest Missouri. Visitation will be held in Excelsior Springs, Missouri in the Polley Funeral Home Saturday, January 1, 2011 at 1 p.m., with services at 2 p.m. Polley Funeral Home 816-630-3388 www.polleyfuneralhome.com
