Johnson, Woodson Tyler 26 Nov 1854 - 11 Jun 1951 CCR 14 Jun 1951
[Note: Son of James & Lucinda (Hayes) Johnson; married Mary Greene Hilton 20 Nov 1859 - 26 Jul 1938]
Woodson Tyler Johnson, pioneer resident of Christian county, died peacefully in his sleep Monday afternoon at the family home in the Hopedale community five miles north of Ozark. He was 96 years of age. His father and mother, James and Lucinda Hayes Johnson, had settled on a farm in Polk County, AR; and it was there where Woodson was born Nov. 26, 1854. when Woodson was a year old the family returned to Missouri, settling in what was then known as the Highlandville community, four miles south of the present Highlandville and one mile north of present Spokane. Here the family of four was orphaned by the death of their father at the hands of bushwackers. A Union soldier, the elder Johnson had returned home on furlough in 1863 and was resting on his house porch, with his 9-year-old son Woodson on his knee, when the renegades came for him. They took him into the woods, robbed him, shot him in the back of the head, and left. Regaining consciousness, the elder Johnson crippled back to his home, was taken to a doctor in Ozark, but died 18 days later. This tragedy left an indelible impression on the mind of the lad Woodson. For a time the orphaned lad lived with an aunt and uncle in Greene County near the present Cody. He spent his young manhood, however, in the home of Col. Charles Haden on a farm south of Springfield. He was married to Mary Greene Hilton of Highlandville Feb. 15, 1877, and the couple settled down on a farm in his old home community near the present Spokane. Here their seven children were born, and six of them grew to maturity. Here began Mr. Johnson’s long consecrated service to his church and community. Joining the Baptist church at 24, he became a charter member of the White Oak Church near Spokane, and with Welch, Cox, Hilton, and Davis families was instrumental in the building of Rock Spring Baptist Church, now, with additions, used as the meeting house of the Spokane church. Deprived of any but the scantiest formal education himself, Mr. Johnson was determined that his children and those of his neighbors should not suffer a similar deprivation. With Uncle Bill Cox, grandfather of Rep. Noel Cox, and Will Hilton, a brother-in-law, he took teams and wagons into northern Arkansas and hauled back pine lumber to build the White Oak school, later taken into the Spokane Consolidated District. The building is still standing and has been remodeled as a residence. Mr. Johnson served a two-year term as county assessor in 1896-97 and after moving to his late home in the Hopedale community in 1919 re-entered public life as presiding judge in Christian County court. He was in this office when the present courthouse was erected at Ozark; and had been elected for another four-year term in 1927 when he burned the last bonds of the $100,000 indebtedness on the structure on the west steps of the courthouse in 1926. One of Mr. Johnson’s vivid memories of a rugged pioneer childhood concerned a lonesome horseback ride down to the Wilderness Road through Stone County to Berryville, AR and return. At the time he was but 17 and not a single homestead had been established in the virgin forest between the Uncle Jim Davis home west of present Spokane and the Kimberling Ferry on White River. Although accustomed to the abundant wild life of his home region, young Johnson mounted his horse and galloped north along the trail, spurred by fear, when he was awakened from a rest stop by the scream of a panther nearby. Mr. Johnson is survived by four sons, G.M Johnson of Route 2, Ozark; W. Lon Johnson of Colville, WA, judge of the State Superior Court, Charles Homer Johnson, a pharmacist of Pullman, WA, and Raymond E. Johnson, Christian County circuit clerk and recorder; two daughters, Mrs. Lunda Gorman of Sapulpa, OK, and Mrs. Allie Wilson of Tucson, AZ; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. One son, James Samuel, died in infancy. His younger brothers and a sister also had preceded him in death. His wife, Mary Greene Johnson, died in 1938 and was buried at her request in Weaver cemetery two miles north of Ozark Highway 65. Mrs. Johnson chose this resting place because she had often spoken of it as one of the most beautiful natural scenes in the Ozarks. Her husband was laid beside her there in the family plot following funeral services held this Thursday afternoon at Hopedale Baptist church with the Rev. Ross Carter of Crane, former pastor and longtime friend of the deceased, assisted by the Rev. Ross Estes, present pastor, officiating. Burial was under direction of Harris of Clever. Pallbearers, all members of related families, were James Gorman, Bill Clarkson, Virgil Brown, Wilford Tate, Clayton Roller, and Simeon Maples.

Z. A. Johnson Passes Away - Old Citizen and Long Time Prominent In the Politics of Christian County - Sheriff During Bald Knob Troubles Back In The 80’s
Died at his apartments in Ozark at 8:30 Monday night, April 14, 1913, Z. A. Johnson aged 52 years, 1 month and 29 days. Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church, of which he was a member, at 2:00 o’clock p.m. Tuesday, conducted by the Rev. W. G. Pike, the pastor, with internment in the Odd Fellow’s cemetery one and a half miles southeast of town. Mr. Johnson was stricken with paralysis while on his way home from Jefferson City on March 15, where he had been on business, and upon his arrival in Springfield was taken to St. John’s Hospital where he was under the care of Dr. Elkins, formerly of Ozark, until his removal to Ozark one week later. With the best of care and medical attention, Mr. Johnson continually failed until all home for recovery was lost and the end came. Mr. Johnson was one of three children of the late James S. Johnson, for two terms treasurer of Christian county and who died here some six years ago. One brother, Will, preceded him several years ago to the grave, and one sister, Mrs. Callie Wolff, of Ozark is the remaining member of the family of three children. Z. A. Johnson was born in Wayne county, Indiana and at the age of 12 years removed with his parents to Iowa. From Iowa, the family moved to Kansas and from Kansas to Carthage, Missouri. From there, they moved to Ozark in 1872, where the family have since continually resided. Mr. Johnson was a united in marriage to Miss Margaret Boyd, a daughter of the late Samuel Boyd, in March 1877, to which union four children were born, to-wit: H. C., H., B,, Jessie and James L. Johnson, the daughter Jessie dying at the age of three years. Mrs. Johnson died in Ozark on June 22, 1900, of blood poisoning which set up after an accident in which she sustained a broken arm. Mr. Johnson for years had been prominent in the politics of the county and was sheriff during the troublesome times of the noted Bald Knobber cases, and officiated as hangman of three of the convicted men who were convicted in the famous Eden-Green case, while the late W. D. Hubbard was judge of this district when it was composed of Greene, Christian and Taney counties. He was first appointed sheriff to serve until an election, he was then elected for the unexpired tern and afterwards elected for two full terms, service from 1886 to 1892. The harrowing details of Bald Knob times would add nothing to the interesting life of Mr. Johnson, who did his full duty in that matter as he always did when an obligation had been assumed by him. He was a friend of the people, open hearted, generous to fault and never forgot a friend. Sociable, affable and agreeable with all, a liberal giver to public enterprises and always boosting for the good of the community in which he lived. His influence will be missed in Ozark and his name mentioned in later years by many yet unborn. His last official position was that of Deputy Game Warden under Jesse A. Tollerton, during his term of service as Game Warden under Gov. Hadley, in which position he served with his usual vigor and determination to carry out the law as he understood it. A large concourse of old friends and political associates attended his funeral at the Methodist church and followed the remains to its last resting place. Many beautiful floral offerings decorated the casket and the mound under which he rests. The family have the profound sympathy of their many friends and the old friends of the most noted man of the county since the war of the rebellion.

[Note: grandson of “Uncle Ike”, postmaster of Notch, Missouri. accidentally shot by a policeman pursuing a robbery suspect in Los Angeles, California]
Notch mourns death of kin of “Uncle Ike”. The people of the Ozarks hill settlement of Notch are mourning the untimely death of Clyde Johnston, youngest of four grandsons of “Uncle Ike,” famous character of Harold Bell Wright’s story, “The Shepherd of the Hills.” Clyde, 19 years old, met death when he ventured from his hill farm to seek his fortune in the west. Two years ago, filled with the pioneer spirit which had brought his grandfather from the coast of Maine to the trails of Stone county, Clyde left for Los Angeles. It was a common topic of the natives of Notch of how he intended to make his fortune before returning to the hills. As he was walking on the street in the western city he was struck in the leg by a stray bullet from the gun of a policeman who was pursuing a robber. The wound proved fatal a few days later. Clyde’s body was brought back to the hills and laid to rest under the snow beside his grandfather, the postmaster of Notch.

Waltz enters plea in brutal 2001murder near Bruner
Matt Lemmon Headline News
Accused killer Dale A. Waltz, 48, entered an Alford plea Feb. 9 in the 2001 murder of Debra Johnston, only weeks before he was scheduled to go on trial for first-degree murder. Under the terms of the agreement, he will go to prison for 23 years rather than fact capital murder charges in March.
With the Alford plea, Waltz is admitting there is enough evidence to convict him without actually admitting guilt.
Christian County Prosecutor Ron Cleek said he didn’t know why Waltz waited until the eve of his trial to accept the plea bargain.
The turn of events caught Cleek - and the rest of the court - by surprise. The court worked during a lunch recess of another jury trial to accept the pleas and sentence Waltz.
The plea leaves only one defendant’s fate undecided in the 2001 murder, in which Johnston was run over by a car and her body left on Trowbridge Road near Bruner. Scott Quessenberry, 37, is also charged with first-degree murder, but in 2001 had been offered a plea bargain by then-prosecutor Susan Spence in exchange for testimony against Waltz. The deal was contingent on Waltz’s conviction.
Cleek said that agreement four years ago with Quessenberry is why he extended the same offer to Waltz.
“I made the offer because I was concerned that was going to come back and be used against me at a trial.” Cleek said. “She had already given an offer to someone that was just as guilty.”
Cleek said he anticipated a plea agreement, with a similar sentence, to be finalized soon with Quessenberry.
A medical examiner testified in 2001 that Johnston died from “the crushing of her chest: when she was run over by the car. At the same hearing, Quessenberry recounted how he and Waltz also stabbed and beat the woman, who they suspected of being a drug snitch.
Without the plea, Waltz faced a capital murder trial - and possibly a death sentence - late next month.

Broyles murder trial April 5
OFPD fraud case in slow motion
Donna Osborn Headliner News
Christian County Prosecutor Ron Cleek will seek the death penalty for Crystal D. Broyles, 28, when she goes on trial April 5 for the murder of David Lee Masters, Nixa, March 2, 2005, by intentionally injecting him with lethal does of cocaine.
Thomas R. Naumann, 51, is also charged in the murder.
Cleek dropped the first-degree murder charge against Brandi L. Storment, 24, after she agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in the cases against Broyles and Naumann. Broyles is Storment’s sister.
Originally, Cleek said he expected a change of venue but a jury from Phelps County will be selected there April 3 and 4 and brought to Christian County to hear the case.
Naumann and Broyles are charged with first-degree murder.
Broyles, Naumann and Christopher Hill, who faced drug-related charges, lived with Masters at a house on Main Street just south of the Nixa city limit. Allegedly, Broyles and Naumann quarreled with Masters over money and sexual advances toward Broyles. Masters was bound with duck tape and injected with a lethal dose of cocaine, tossed in the bed of a pickup truck and dumped on the banks of the James river.
Cleek also elicited testimony from Christian County investigator Annette Ramsey about drug paraphernalia consistent with methamphetamine production in the red Grand Am parked at the home and registered to Christopher Hill.
Naumann is scheduled to go on trial Oct. 23. Cleek is seeking the death penalty for both defendants. Cleek said at this point “it looks like we will get a jury here,” for the Naumann case.
Both defendants have public defenders contracted through the public defender’s offices.
BRUNER MURDER
Marshall (Scott) Quessenberry goes on trial in Christian County June 26 for the January 2001 murder of Debra J. Johnston.
Cleek is seeking the death penalty. Quessenberry, along with Dale Waltz, allegedly ran over Johnston several times on a rural country road near Bruner because she threatened to expose their drug-related activities.
Dale Waltz pleaded guilty and is serving 85 percent of a 23-year sentence on second degree murder.
OFPD FRAUD
Stacey E. Scrivener’s preliminary hearing scheduled for March 9 was reset at the request of the prosecutor’s office for 10 a.m., May 25, at the Christian County Courthouse.
Cleek files a Class C felony stealing charge Sept. 13, 2005, against Scrievener, former office manger at the Ozark Fire Protection District.
The charge alleges that Scrivener stole more than $20,000 from the district by accessing its bank account through automatic withdrawals. The probably cause statement says that Scrivener “committed the act of stealing by electronically transferring funds from the OFPD bank account . . . to make payment to her company credit card.”
The statement also alleged that Scrivener made payment to her City Utilities bill in Springfield for more than $1,00 for residential services and to Cox Health Professional Collections for more than $1,855. There were also numerous charges to the district’s card for purchases at Brown Derby Liquor, Dillards and Victoria’s Secret.
Scrivener pleaded not quilt to the charges and her attorney said that she did nothing wrong, that the district permitted the card use and added that blaming the secretary would not work.
She was employed by the Fire Protection District office in Ozark for about a year before she was terminated in March 2005
