Max and Dwight Hawkins returning to Ozark after Saturday night midnight show in Springfield discover car over embankment near James River bridge -- three killed instantly, fourth dies Tuesday morning.

Max and Dwight Hawkins, sons of Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Hawkins of Ozark, returning from a Saturday night midnight show in Springfield early Sunday morning discovered a car over the embankment near the James River bridge. Mrs. Mildred Tatum Weaver, 20, Harry Edward Gibson, 21, and Carl Koenneman, 27, all of Springfield, were killed outright in the accident, and Carl Durham, 25, also of Springfield, was fatally injured. He died Tuesday morning in a Springfield hospital without regaining consciousness. As Max and Dwight came to the scene of the accident, the top of their car brushed a telephone guy wire, suspended across the highway and fearing a hold-up, drove on. As they rounded the curve just prior to making the straight climb up the James River hill on Highway 65, one of the boys looked back and saw the tail light of the wrecked automobile still burning in the ravine into which it had crashed. They debated the matter and decided to return and investigate. They turned around at the filling station at the Mentor turn-off, returning to the scene where they found the wrecked coupe and the occupants scattered about. The boys immediately enlisted the aid of Mr. Gooch, who operated a nearby filling station and examination revealed that three of the victims were dead and the fourth seriously, if not fatally, injured. Mrs. Gooch then drove to Galloway where an ambulance from Springfield was called and the dead removed to Springfield undertaking establishments and Durham rushed to a hospital there. The accident is supposed to have happened at least 25 or 30 minutes before its discovery. The cause of the accident and its circumstances will probably never be revealed.
