Funeral services for Andrew Abrem Maples, 69, who died March 11 at his farm home 6 miles west of Nixa, were held March 12 at 2:00 p.m. in the Delaware Church with Rev. Fred Jackman and Rev. Reg Mapes officiating. Burial was in Delaware Cemetery under direction of Harris Funeral Home of Clever. A native of Christian County, he was a member of the Nixa Baptist Church where he served as deacon. He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge of Clever. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Bessie Maples, two sons, Ivan Maples of Nixa and Byron Maples of Billings; five grandchildren; three brothers, Sam and Leslie Maples of Aurora, and Mose Maples of Nixa; two sisters, Mrs. Betty Greenway and Mrs. Aggie Rogers, both of Aurora.

Mrs. Maples died of natural causes at 11:13 p.m. Sunday at Springfield Community Hospital. A lifelong resident of Stone and Christian Counties, Mrs. Maples had lived in Nixa since 1967. She was a member of Mount Sinai Baptist Church. Argus Scofield Maples, 83, Highlandville, died at 7:40 a.m. Thursday, May 6, 1993 in Springfield Community Hospital. He was born Nov. 27, 1909 in Ozark. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel, and his parents. He is survived by three sisters, Georgia Buxton, Ozark, Penelope Riley, Springfield and Earnestine Riley, Aurora, Colo.; three brothers, Halleck Maples, Highlandville, Robert “Bob” Maples, Pryor, Okla.; Francis Maples, Crane, and several nieces and nephews. Services were held Saturday, May 8, at Fraizer Cemetery, with the Reverends Jim Bradley and Tommy Bilyeu officiating. Services were under the direction of Harris, a Heritage Funeral Home, Ozark.

Austin M. Maples, 78, of Highlandville, died at 7:30 p.m. Monday in St. John’s Hospital following a lingering illness. A veteran of World War I, Mr. Maples was a retired farmer of the Tory community south of Highlandville. He was a member of the pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Tory. He is survived by his wife, Weltha; two sons, Glen and James of Highlandville; one daughter, Mrs. Lois Foell, Springfield; one sister. Miss. Lona Sims, Nixa; 13 grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at Tory, south of Highlandville. The Rev. Earl Bishop and the Rev. Howard Blevins will officiate. Funeral services for 10-month-old Austin Ray Maples of Ponce De Leon will be held today (Thursday) in the New Haven General Baptist church, officiating by the Revs. Elmer Davis and Freeda Holt. Burial will be in Schupbach Cemetery, under the direction of Harris of Ozark. The infant succumbed to a heart condition that developed three days after his birth. He died Monday at 6:30 a.m. in Children’s Mercy Hospital, Kansas City, where he had undergone several heart operations, the first at the age of eight months. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Maples. NIXA - Mrs. Bessie L. Maples, 83, died at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday in a Springfield nursing home after an illness of eight months. Mrs. Maples, a lifelong resident of the Nixa commentary, was a member of First Baptist Church, Nixa. She is survived by one son, Byron of Billings; five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and one brother, Raymond Forbis, Springfield. Services were at 10 a.m. Friday in Harris Chapel, Nixa, with the Rev. Kenneth Bandy officiating. Burial was in Delaware Cemetery, west of Nixa.

Betty Lou Maples, 64, Springfield, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003 in St. John's Regional Health Center, Springfield. She was born Oct. 16, 1939, the daughter of Charles and Thelma (Anderson) Blevins. Maples was a homemaker and liked to play Bingo. She loved her family and especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was married to Fredrick Maples who preceded her in death as well as her parents, and a brother, Charles Blevins. Survivors include eight children, Vickie Coker-Brennan and Tracy Brennan, Mary Chenoweth and Clifford Dickinson, Tamara Butler and Isaac, Jenny Lou Loftis, Robin Greathouse, Jack Newberry and Barbara, Theresa Newberry, and April St. Clair, all of Springfield; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Helen, Judy, and Kathy. Graveside funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 17, in Spokane Cemetery with Pastor Ben DeWitt officiating. Visitation was held from 9 to 10 a.m. Dec. 17.

Services for Rev. Bruce C. Maples, 90, Ozark, were held Jan. 7 in Harris Chapel with the Rev. Troy Rhoten officiating, Burial was in Oddfellows Cemetery. Rev. Maples died Jan. 4 in Ozark Nursing and Care Center. He was a retired Southern Baptist minister, and was educated in Ozark public schools and attended Drury College in Springfield and New Orleans, Baptist Theological Seminary. He was awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters by Sioux Empire College of Harden, Iowa. Rev. Maples was also postmaster of Ozark for 13 years. In 1954, Rev. Maples began his work with the Office of Missions, and two years later, he became director of the Division of Missions. Under his leadership, 228 new churches were organized and 885 new mission stations. Among the several area churches he pastored were Chestnutridge, Crane, Mount Zion, and Fremont Hills. Survivors include his wife, Maude, Ozark; a son, William B. Maples, Knoxville, Tenn.; two daughters, June Hanks, Ozark and Mrs. Glenn Barron, Kingsport, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; six brothers, Simeon, Ozark, Halleck and Argus, both of Highlandville, Bob, Lebanon, Bill, Niangua and Francis, Crane; five sisters, Ruby Bilyeu, Spokane, Inez Maples, Clever, Georgia Buxton, Ozark, Penelope Riley, Phoenix, Ariz and Ernestine Riley, Aurora, Colo.

Bryon M. Maples, 77, Billings, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 1990 in Republic Park Care Center, following an apparent heart attack. A longtime resident of the Clever and Billings communities, he was a member of Clever United Methodist Church. A dairyman, he was retired from the Mid-American Dairymen's Association and was a member of Teamsters Local No. 245. He is survived by his wife, Filettes, of the home; two sons, Jerry of Nixa and Mickey of Republic; a daughter, Becky Pearce and her husband, Mickey, Billings; four grandsons, Eric and Chris, both of Clever, Lance Pearce and Shawn Pearce, both of Billings; a granddaughter, Christina Pearce, Billings; and five great-grandchildren. Services were Thursday, Nov. 15, in Clever United Methodist Church with the Rev. James Lee officiating. Burial was in Delaware Cemetery. Simeon P. Maples, aged 83 years, died at the home of his son, R. H. Maples, near Ponce de Leon, Wednesday March 24, 1926. Burial services were held at Frazier Chapel, near Boaz, Saturday afternoon. Charley Maples, aged 43 years and son of Simeon P. Maples, was found dead at a spring near his home Friday morning, March 26, 1926, and thus creating the double funeral service as given above, conducted by Rev. Baucom and assisted by Rev. Deaver. The funeral of Simeon P. Maples had been planned for Friday afternoon, but upon finding of the dead body of his son Friday morning, the arrangements were changed. Charley W. Maples, 96, Clever, died at 2:28 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, in Ozark Mountain Regional Healthcare Center, Crane. He was born February 12, 1907, in Stone County, Mo., the son of Gabriel and Martha (Little) Maples. He was united in marriage to Opal V. Roy on March 24, 1928. Mr. Maples was a member of the Union Ridge Baptist Church, Clever, where he was saved at the age of 21 years old. After retirement, Mr. Maples sold his farm and moved to Clever, and has lived there for the past 30 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal, on April 2, 2003; a son, Gary; an infant son, Johnny Gene; his parents; three brothers, Loren, Lester and Riley; and a sister, Gladys. He is survived by a son and his wife, Joe and Shirley Maples, Clever; a daughter and her husband, Betty and Gene Baker, Hurley; nine grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Elnora Echols, Paducah, Ky.; other relatives; and a host of friends. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at Meadors Funeral Homes, Clever, with Rev. Larry Winfree and Rev. Leeroye Maples officiating. Services for Chester Randall Maples, 49, Clever, were held May 25 in Union Ridge Baptist Church with the Rev. Hosea Bilyeu officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery under direction of Meadors of Clever. Mr. Maples was found dead May 23 in a rural area of Stone county east of Union City. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Stone County Sheriff James Barnes. Mr. Maples was a Navy veteran who served in the Korean War. He also was a member of Jamesville Baptist Church. Clint Douglas Maples was born August 14, 1970, son of Jerrel Maples and Norma Maples of Springfield, Mo. In 1971 the family moved to Strafford, Mo. He departed this life October 17, 2004, in his home. He was preceded in death by his father in 1998. He was a graduate of Strafford High School and a member of First Baptist Church of Strafford, Missouri. Clint leaves his mother, of the home. He leaves his sister, Mrs. Alta Patterson and husband, Steve of Strafford, Missouri. He leaves his brother, Jerrel "Bill" Maples and wife, Laura of Overland Park, Kansas; his brother, Jim Maples and wife, Cathy of Fair Grove, Missouri; brother, Chris Maples and wife, Kim of Strafford, Missouri; and a special aunt, Janice Sparks and her husband, Richard of Bristol, New Hampshire. Clint has several nieces and nephews that he loved dearly. He had many friends that were very special to him. He was loved very much and will be always in our hearts. We look forward to being with him and our Lord Jesus Christ in Heaven. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 21, 2004, in Walnut Lawn DeGraffenreid-Wood Funeral Home with the Reverend's Keith Vawter and Boone Middleton officiating. Dale Maples, 40, former resident of the Clever and Nixa communities, died Friday morning of an apparent heart attack at Cary, Ill, where he made his home. Son of the former funeral director at Clever, the late Wilburn Maples, he was associated with the Curtiss Breeding Service at Cary for the past 11 years. Prior to this, he ran the Maplewood Dairy at Nixa for several years. He was a member of the Crystal Lake Baptist Church at Crystal Lake, Ill., a member of the Masonic Lodge at Ozark, a York Rite Mason of Springfield and a member of Abou Ben Adhem at Springfield. Survivors include his wife, Rosalie; four sons, Mike, Tommie, Gary and Tracey, all of the home; his mother, Zula Maples King, Clever and a sister, Mrs. Betty Orcutt, St. Louis. Services for Dearl Franklin Maples, 49, Highlandville, were held Oct. 20 in Faith Baptist Church, Spokane with the Revs. George Bishop and John Bean officiating. Burial was in Tory Cemetery. Mr. Maples died Oct. 17 in St. John’s Regional Health Center, Springfield, after a year long illness. A farmer, he was a lifelong resident of the Spokane Cemetery. He was bus driver for Spokane schools for several years, operated a milk truck for 17 years delivering a Major Cheese, Ozark, and was a member of Faith Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Norma; three sons,. Roger Lynn and Leon, both of Highlandville, and Mark, of the home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Loren Maples, Highlandville; three brothers, Orville, Highlandville, Junior, Ozark, and Wendell, Highlandville; five sisters, Mrs. Opal Hendrix, Springfield, Mrs. Freda Roy, Crane, Mrs. Marcella Moore, Clever, Mrs. Martha Ellen White, Highlandville, and Mrs. Eleanor Jean Coats, Independence; and one granddaughter.

Denise Maples, age 50, of Searcy, Ark., passed away Monday, July 5, 2010. She was born August 23, 1959, in Ontario, California, the daughter of Jerry and Ruth (Wallace) Moore. She was a 1977 graduate of Nixa High School, and on September 1, 1980 she and Carey Maples were united in marriage. Denise devoted her life to her family, and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and sister. Survivors include husband, Carey; two children, Kiley Chastain and husband David, Lawton, Okla., and Lexie Maples, Pittsburg, Kan.; two grandchildren, Ellie Maples and Natalie Chastain; her parents, Jerry and Ruth Moore, Nixa; three siblings, Larry Moore and wife Lisa, Nixa, Elaine Holt and husband Rick, Purdy, and Clayton Moore, Nixa; nieces and nephews, and many friends. Mrs. Rittie Maples, 447 E. Madison Ave., Springfield, a former resident of the Boaz community, was notified by the War Department Thursday, Aug. 17, that her son, Pfc. Donald Maples, was killed in action in France July 30. Pfc. Maples entered the Armed Forces in February 1942, and was sent overseas in May of this year. He entered France the first of July. Before entering the service, Donald worked on the farm. A brother, Cpl. William (Bill) Maples is stationed in Arkansas.

Edith Marie Maples, age 85, of Aurora, died Sunday, December 7, 1997, in the Aurora Community Hospital. She was born April 27, 1912, near the community of Union Ridge to Arthur Lee “Bud” and Ethel Fugitt. On October 17, 1928, she married Alzie Wesly Maples. To this union three children were born. She had lived in the communities of Hurley and Highlandville before moving with her daughter, Barbara, to Aurora in June, 1993. She entered the Aurora Nursing Center on December 14, 1995. Edith was saved at an early age and was a member of Union Ridge Baptist Church. Her husband preceded her in death on October 16, 1985. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Ray and Lester Fugitt. Survivors include a son, Rev. Leeroye Maples and his wife, Velma, Nixa; two daughters, Jackie Medlin, and Barbara DeBoie, both of Aurora; eight grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 9, in the Ponce Pentecostal Church, Ponce de Leon, with Rev. Joe Dan Edwards officiating. Burial was in Union ridge Cemetery, under the direction of Adams Funeral Home, Nixa.

Elias S. Maples, 81, prominent Christian County farmer for many years, died at 11 p.m. Tuesday at his home in Aurora. Mr. Maples, who had farmed near Clever, retired seven years ago and moved to Aurora. One of his sons, Ward of Marionville, is judge of the eastern district of Lawrence County. Other survivors are the widow, Grace; three sons, Alva and James, both of Seattle, and Elmer of Marionville; a daughter, Mrs. Ethel Nelson of Billings; a brother, W. C. Maples of Aurora; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth McCarthy and Mrs. Mary Wooley, both of Montana; and 19 grandchildren and 11 great- grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Marsh Chapel at Aurora with burial in the Frazier Cemetery near Clever.

Emmett Maples, 85, Springfield, passed away at 3:44 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2001, in Christian Health Care East. Mr. Maples, a field service mechanic for E. A. Martin Machinery Company, was born September 7, 1915, in Tory, Mo., the son of the late George Bentley and Naoma (Brown) Maples. He was united in marriage to Katherine Bishop on June 6, 1936, in Springfield, Mo.; she preceded him in death on May 13, 2001. He was a member of High Street Baptist Church. He enjoyed wildlife; he loved horses and all animals. He enjoyed vegetable gardening and tinkering with motors of any kind. An infant son, Dewey Maples; four brothers; and two sisters, also preceded him in death. He is survived by a son and his wife, Larry and Deanna Maples, Rogersville; a sister, Beatrice Shelton, Highlandville; three grandchildren and their spouses, Mark Andrew and Casey Maples, Kathryn Ann and David Patton, and Stephen Paul Maples, all of Springfield; a great-grandson, Joshua Andrew Maples; and several nieces and nephews. Ermel L. Maples, age 83, Nixa, passed away Monday, May 11, 2009 in St. John's Regional Health Center after a long stay, with her daughter and oldest granddaughter by her side as Jesus wrapped her in his arms and called her home. Ermel was born October 28, 1925. On August 5, 1945 she married Ivan Maples. Together they had two children. Ermel worked as a machine operator for Lily-Tulip Cup Coop until her retirement. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends and playing with her grandkids. Ermel also enjoyed seeing her flowers blooming and working in the yard. Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Tindle; her ex-son-in law, Wayne Tindle; six grandchildren, Melissa Dunkin, Mike Stacey and Annetta Tindle, Nixa, and Duston Weeks, Christian Weeks and Darin Maples, Springfield; 21 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rowena Oliphant and husband Dean and Evelyn Kuhns; a brother, Robert Wolfe; several nieces and nephews; and a very dear friend, Dorothy Loftis, Ozark. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Clever Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Rev. Lynn Swadley and Rev. Walter Geren officiating. Burial was in Frazier Cemetery under direction of the Maples-Harris Funeral Home of Clever.

Eugene Maples, 15 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Maples of Logan, died last week in St. Luke hospital in St. Louis following an operation. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon in the Marionville Baptist Church conducted by Rev. F.L. Wise with burial in the Marionville Cemetery under direction of the Wilburn Maples Funeral Home of Clever. Survivors include his parents, both maternal and paternal grandparents and a host of relatives and friends.
