Dies suddenly shortly after midnight Saturday at his home just south of Ozark -- was former county and state official -- moved to farm near here just a few months ago.

J.T. (Tom) Mapes, prominent former county and state official, died at his home just south of Ozark shortly after midnight last Saturday from an unexpected attack of heart trouble. He had complained for a short time of what had symptoms of being indigestion, and was not aware of any heart ailments. He was born the son of Henry J. Mapes and Mary Ann Mitchell in this county and was reared and spent his life here, with the exception of a few years living in Springfield. He was converted to the Baptist faith early in life and later affiliated with the Ozark Baptist church. He received his education in Christian county, later entering the Southwest Teachers’ college in Springfield where he received a state life certificate. In his early life he taught school at various places throughout this county and in 1907 was elected County School Commissioner. Two years later he was elected county superintendent and served in that capacity until 1926, at which time he resigned to accept an appointment under the administration of Gov. Sam A. Baker. In the same year he was appointed by Gov. Baker to an honorary Colonelship and served on the Governor’s staff of colonels during the Baker administration. For the past few years he was connected with the Missouri Mutual Life Insurance company. After his resignation a short time ago he retired from public life, moving from Springfield to his native county to be near his relatives and friends. He was united in marriage on Nov. 5, 1893, to Ella May Nance. To this union three children were born, one dying in infancy. Those surviving with their mother are Reg, a son, of Ozark, and Grace, a daughter. He is also survived by two sisters, Nancy Kessinger of Ozark and Lillie Roberts of Manitou, Colo., and one brother, Newt Mapes of Chadwick, together with three grandchildren, Margaret Sue, Maurice and Tommy Mapes, children of Mr. and Mrs. Reg Mapes. AND
Mapes, Joseph Thomas "Tom" 9 Apr 1873 - 24 Nov 1934 CCR 29 Nov 1934 p1

Tom Mapes as we learned to know him after coming to Ozark, was a man with outstanding ability and a deep and keen insight to human nature. Probably no man has ever lived in Christian county who possessed the wealth of universal friendships as held by Tom Mapes. His public life, both as a county official for a long number of years which had gained for him a first name speaking acquaintance with practically every person in the county, and his later public life as a state official, had added treasures of untold worth in this wealth of friendship. He was a man who measured friendship in a deep and broad way. He thought little of time when in life of duty for a friend. We have known him to go a long way to say just a word for one whom he called a friend and probably loved. He was thoughtful, considerate and kind to those he loved and when called he was thinking more of comfortable preparations for those dear to him than he was of himself. We have heard him spoken of as a power in the political life of the county and it must be that much of this power rested in his careful analysis of the depth and breadth of what friendship means. His untimely passing is an irreparable loss to his family, yet the community as a whole has a claim upon a man whose life had been given so freely and so extensively to public service. His wish as spoken to his only son that when the time came his desire was to be called quickly, was granted, yet it cannot lessen the anguish of bereaved hearts, nor make easy the willingness to bow to the mighty power of Death.
