McCauley, Orville 20 Sep 1895 – 26 May 1997 CCH-N 31 May 1997
[Note: Son of James Russell & Edna Nancy (Miles) McCauley; married 25 Feb 1920 Agnes “Aggie” Gilbert 18 Sep 1893 - 25 Jun 1995]
Orville McCauley, 101, died Monday, May 26, 1997, in Ozarks Methodist Manor, Marionville, of complications from pneumonia. He was born September 20, 1895, and was the son of James Russell and Edna Nancy (Miles) McCauley. On February 25, 1920, he married Aggie Gilbert. They were married seventy-five years before her death in 1995. Mr. McCauley lived throughout his life in Nixa. He and Aggie lived in the same house for more than seventy-four years. He was a member of Cassidy Methodist Church. Farming was a livelihood, career and a passion for Orville McCauley. In 1925 he started a custom thrashing operation and ran a thrashing machine rig for 30 years, thrashing grain in Christian County and southern Greene County. He thrashed grain from land known today as Battlefield Mall, the Medical Mile, Chesterfield Village, and Parkcrest Shopping Center. He was a very progressive and innovative farmer. He was one of the first farmers to use and promote the use of commercial fertilizer. The first test of Boron, a widely-used ingredient in alfalfa fertilizer today, was conducted on his farm in 1948. He was the first farmer in Christian County to raise a measured and documented hundred bushels of corn to the acre. He was the first farmer in the state of Missouri to raise certified orchard grass seed and delivered the first load of fescue seed ever processed by the Nixa Hardware and Seed Company. He received many local, county, and state awards for diversified farming, soil conservation, balanced farming, and leadership in the agriculture extension programs. In 1960 he discovered a second passion in life when he purchased a Jumbo steam traction engine, just like the one he ran for his father when he was 13 years old. From that beginning grew a collection of immaculately-restored steam traction engines. He was a member of Ozarks Steam Engine Association. In 1965, at the age of seventy, he was invited to demonstrate one of his steam engines at Silver Dollar City’s National Festival of Craftsman. For the next twenty-five years he demonstrated at Silver Dollar City with as many as three engines. He spent many hours visiting with steam enthusiasts from all over the nation. At ninety-four, he reluctantly retired due to health. Preceding him in death were: his wife, Aggie; a daughter, Alys Evelyn Scholten; and two sisters, Eula Hulse Claussen and Lennie Powell. Survivors include: three children, Edith Herndon, Mountlake Terrace, Washington, Dwight McCauley, Richmond, Indiana; and Jim McCauley and his wife, Delma, Nixa; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Friday, May 20, in Adams Funeral Home, Nixa. Burial was in McCauley Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Ozarks Methodist Manor.

Died at her home 2 1/2 miles west of Ozark of heart trouble and pneumonia after an illness of only six days, Jan. 11, 1902, Mrs. Sarah E. McCauley, aged 54 years, 9 months and 24 days. Mrs. McCauley was born in Lafayette county, Mo. April 17th, 1848. She was married to T. F. M. McCauley Sept. 27, 1866. There was born to the, eleven children, five boys and six girls. ten of them still living, six are married and four still at home. She was converted when 18 years of age and united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church; and lived a consistent Christian life until her death. Sister McCauley was a good woman, a loving companion and a kind mother. She was loved by all who knew her. Though mother is dead, her influence still lives in the memory of her husband and children, who are left to mourn her loss, but the loss is Heaven’s gain. The funeral services were held at the home cemetery Sunday, Jan, 12th 1902, conducted by the Rev. James Lokey of the M. E. Church. There was a large crowd of friends and relatives present to pay last tribute of respect. As the weather was disagreeable, the service was short. May Heaven’s blessing and benediction rest upon the bereaved family in their hour of sadness. No loving similes from the dear companion no words of cheer from the dear mother. May God help them to so live in this works that they may make one unbroken family in the Kingdom of Heaven. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community. She had gone to the place of which Christ said, “I go to prepare a place for you, and I will come again and receive you unto myself.” Though earth be fading from my view and darkest night seem nigh, And I must bid this world adieu, It is not too hard to die, For oh how sweet is death’s deep shade, Amid its strange alarms, To feel beneath my spirit laid The everlasting arms. A Friend

In memory of our dear father, Thomas McCauley, who departed this life March 11, 1924. Dear father, how we miss you even though just three months ago you left us. We would not recall you, dear father, even though we had the power. But we will leave you in the hands of a just God. Dear father, your chair in sister Iva’s home is vacant, which never can be filled. But Dear Lord, you spared father 22 years with us children after dear mother was taken away.
In the graveyard safely sleeping, Where the green grass gently waves,
Lies dear father and mother we loved so dearly, In their silent lonely graves.
Peaceful be your sleep dear parents, It’s sweet to breath your names.
In life we loved you dearly. In death we do the same

Arthur Albert McClellan Jr. died January 28, 2009, at the age 92, in the Baptist Home in Ozark, Mo. Arthur was a life long resident of Springfield, Mo., born on March 22, 1916. He was preceded in death by his parents, Maude Parrish and Arthur Albert McClellan Sr. He married Captola Mae Gossage on December 12, 1936, in Mt. Vernon, Mo., and since her death on October 13, 2006, Arthur's most frequent expression was that he wanted to be with his beloved Captola. Following graduation from Central High School in Springfield, Arthur began his 44-year career at the Frisco Railroad, first as a brakeman, and ultimately as a conductor. He was a proud and devoted member of United Transportation Union (UTU) for over 70 years and served one term as president of the local chapter. He retired from Frisco in 1976. Co-workers and managers alike, without exception, respected and admired Arthur for his integrity, trustworthiness, concern for others and vision. Please visit www.greenlawnfuneralhome.com to read Arthur's story of The Conduct of a Conductor and comments on benevolence: The Joy of Giving to Others. He loved to read and write. His entrepreneurial spirit was evident in his businesses including real estate and concessions such as his horse-drawn "Curbette,” that delighted neighborhood children selling snow cones and ice cream. In his time away from the railroad, he greatly enjoyed woodworking, fishing and caring for his vegetable garden, which produced an abundance that he loved to share with neighbors, family and many friends. Arthur was a member of Grant Avenue Baptist Church for 55 years, serving in multiple capacities including being a Deacon and Chairman of Deacons. He cherished the people and property of Grant Avenue Baptist, giving his time and energy to teaching, support of ministries and maintenance of the facilities. His love for music spanned from childhood as a Boy Scout Band Baritonist to adulthood as a church choir member for many years. Helping others was his great joy. He wrote, ". . . when we give to our brothers . . .we experience the breath-taking exhilaration of feeling God smile." Arthur looked for opportunities to help people in need. For many years after his retirement, he faithfully delivered Meals on Wheels.
