McCullough Mary Elizabeth (Moore) 10 Mar 1915 - 2 Mar 2008 AdamsFH
[Note: Daughter of Rupert & Delia (Mattson) Moore; married May 1940 Jim McCullough]
After a long and healthy life, Mary Elizabeth (Moore) McCulloch died peacefully at 2:25 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 2008. Mary was born to Delia (Mattson) and Rupert Moore on March 10, 1915 in Lead, South Dakota. Her father died in the 1918 Influenza Epidemic, and her mother moved the family to Nashville, Tennessee to be near their grandmother. They later moved to Miami, Florida, where Mary attended high school and aspired to be a dress designer with a shop in Paris. (Later in life she recalled that her wish had been fulfilled in sewing for her three daughters.) With the reality of the Depression, Mary graduated from high school and began working in a bank. There she met Jim, the love of her life. In May 1940, they married in Pasadena, California, where they lived for 12 years with their three daughters and also provided a home for their own mothers. In 1952, they settled in Santa Ana, California. Seven years after the death of her husband, Mary embarked on a new adventure at the age of ninety, leaving her Southern California home and long-time neighbors and friends. She moved to Ozark Riverview Residential where she enjoyed being near family, making new friends, participating in exercise class, and reading. Mary represented women of her era, investing herself in raising her children and making a home, enjoying fully her involvement in cooking, sewing and gardening, skills she passed on to her daughters and grandchildren. Mary saw the beauty in the world and expected the best. Petite and unassuming, she chose to brighten the corner where she was through conversations with strangers, visiting neighbors, and sharing bouquets of roses from her garden. At the grocery store, on the sidewalk, or on an airplane, she always met “the nicest people”. Above all, her life reflected her deep faith in God and her love for her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Jim, and her grandson, Joel Buster. Her survivors include Susan and Walt Buster of Fresno, CA; Nancy McCulloch and Wolfgang Ametsbichler of Missoula, MT; Molly and Dennis Edwards of Springfield, MO; Thomas Graff of Missoula, MT. In addition, she is survived by seven grandchildren; Sean Graff, Salt Lake City; Keir Graff, Chicago; Amy Buster, San Rafael, CA; Nate Buster, Portland, OR; Megan Walawender, Lenexa, KS; Peter McCulloch, Astoria, NY; and Emily Edwards, Kansas City, and seven great-grandchildren: Wilhelmina and Oscar of Salt Lake City; Felix and Cosmo of Chicago; Diego and Luciana of Portland; and Henry of Lenexa. A celebration of Mary’s life will be held Sunday, March 9, at 2 p.m. at Riverview Residential Place in Ozark. At Mary’s request, please do not send flowers but remember her with contributions to the Salvation Army, 1707 W. Chestnut Expressway, Springfield, MO 65802, or Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1855 N. Orange Olive Rd., Orange, CA 92865. Special thanks to honorary daughter Sharon Harmon, Dee Thomas, and the Riverview Residential Place staff, and Dan and Donna Serven and the Ozark Riverview Manor staff for their loving care and support.

Car leaves road, aged lady killed. Daughter of victim badly injured. Rushed to Ozark Sanitarium for medical aid, mother’s body to be shipped to Iowa. Accident happened Tuesday near Reeds Spring cut-off on Highway no 65. Death resulted to Mrs. C.M. McCumber, 69, of Lorima, Iowa, and serious but not fatal injuries to her daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Peterson, also of Lorima, when the Ford roadster in which they were visiting the Ozarks, left Highway no. 65, near the Reeds Spring cut-off and plunged down a 30 foot embankment. Mrs. McCumber was instantly killed, the skull being fractured and the body badly mangled. Mrs. Peterson was rendered unconscious and lay in the wreckage for perhaps an hour before being found. She was just regaining consciousness when taken from the wreck. Coroner H.L. Kerr of Stone county visited the scene of the accident and decided an inquest was unnecessary and administered aid to Mrs. Peterson who was later removed to the Ozark Sanitarium. Tuesday night she was taken to Willow Springs by the Chaffin ambulance. The body of Mrs. McCumber was brought to the T.B. Chaffin Funeral Home and prepared for burial. It is reported the remains will be shipped to Iowa for interment. Another daughter of the unfortunate aged lady, a Mrs. Shenaut of Willow Springs, was notified of the accident and rushed to Ozark by auto Tuesday morning. The aged lady and her daughter were enjoying their first pleasure trip to the Ozarks and the region of Lake Taneycomo and also their first vacation for more than two years. Mrs. Peterson and her mother left their home in Lorimor, Iowa, bound for Willow Springs to visit relatives and attend the graduating exercises of the Willow Springs High School from which a niece and granddaughter was to graduate. Mrs. Peterson who was driving failed to see the turnoff from Highway No. 66 leading to Willow Springs and continued driving on No. 66 until they reached Springfield, and then took No. 65. They found themselves at the Arkansas line, south of Hollister, before they discovered their mistake. They returned to Hollister and remained there Monday night, leaving for Willow Springs early Tuesday morning. The supposition is that a flat tire caused the car to leave the road and plunge over the embankment.

Eliza McDaniel Celebrates Her 100th Birthday
[Caption: Eliza McDaniel]
Friends and relatives from far and near gathered last Friday March 7 at the home of Eliza McDaniel to help celebrate her 100th birthday.
In honor of this special occasion, an open house was held by her family and was attended by approximately 75 people.
Eliza also received several calls from well-wishers who could not be on hand. Among these was a call from Oregon, another from California, and a local call from her friend, Tinnie Blevins who will soon be 96.
And, included among the many, many birthday cards she received (a total of 73 by the afternoon), there was, of course, one from President Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy.
Eliza mentioned that someone had hinted that President Reagan might call personally, but she didn’t figure he would because “He’s got too much on his mind to fool with a little thing like me.”
Except for a short span during 1906 when she moved to Washington, Eliza has lived all of her life in Christian County. The last 65 years have been spent on farm near Smyrna Church which she and her late husband Carl (Colonel) McDaniel bought in 1921.
She also began attending services that year at Smyrna, where she still goes when she is able. Eliza says she is the oldest living member of the congregation. To commemorate last Friday’s occasion, her church has provided her with a beautiful fresh-flower corsage.
Eliza commented that she had never seen a one-hundred year old person before and then laughing at her own comment, added, “Until I looked at myself.”
Someone handed her a plaque with a picture of the Statue of Liberty and the caption 1886 - 1986 printed actress the bottom told her she was as old ad the Statue of Liberty. Thus brought a chuckle from Eliza.
Eliza said she is blessed with two grandchildren, five great grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, all of whom were on hand Friday.
The two grandchildren are LaNeil Walker and Charles Wills who are the children of the late Dollie Wills, Eliza’s only child. Walker resides in Dallas, Texas, with her husband,. Joe, and their three sons, Stan, Todd, and Ross. Wills lives in Springfield with his wife, Jean, and their son, Stephen. They also have a daughter, Susie Rock who resides in Columbia with husband, Tom, and two sons, Charles and Dylan.
When asked if during her younger years, she ever thought she would live to be a hundred, her reply was, “Law no, if anyone had told that ten years ago or even this time last year, I wouldn’t have believed them.
the call from President Reagan never came, but amid all the other happy warm wishes and congratulations, it probably wasn’t missed too terribly much,
