Birdie Amanda Cobb was born Janary 22, 1895 in Texas, the daughter of Marion M. and Naomi King Cobb. At an early age, she came with her family to Stone County and settled in Union City. On August 13, 1913, she was united in marriage to Thomas Martin Mitchell and was a member of the Hood Methodist Church at Republic. She entered into rest July 21 at her home near Republic at the age of 61 years, five months and 29 days. Survivors include her husband, Martin Mitchell of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Naomi Williamson of Phoenix, Ariz. and  Mrs. Iva Curbow of Cherryvale, Kan.; two grandchildren; five brothers, Sylva Cobb of Cushing, Okla., Hobart Cobb of Denver, Colo., Robert Cobb of Modesto, Calif., Taylor Cobb of Ceres, Calif., Arthur Cobb of Hurley and Howell Cobb of Springfield; a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held July 23 in Hood Methodist Church at Republic, the Rev. Alfred Smith officiating, south of Clever under direction of the Harris Funeral Home of Clever.

Clarence Mitchell, 73, died Sunday, March 15 in Cox Medical Center South, Springfield. Mr. Mitchell was a retired farmer in the Chadwick area. Services were held on Wednesday, March 18 in Garrison Baptist Church. Burial was at Swansville Cemetery, south of Chadwick, under the direction of Harris Colonial Chapel, Ozark.

Cora Jane Mitchell, age 93, of Nixa, died Friday, February 5, 1999, in the home she shared with her daughter. She was born April 18, 1905 in Bradleyville, and was the daughter of Samuel and Mary Melinda Malissa (Wood) Martin. She was married to David Otto Mitchell who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a daughter Ruth Varble, a son David Otto Mitchell, Jr., and two sisters Essie Vaughn, and Sarah Melton. Years ago she became a member of the Green Valley General Baptist Church. Survivors include: a daughter, Betty Wampler, Nixa; four grandchildren, Dennis Varble and his wife Barbara, Kansas City, Denise Stowe, Nixa, Judy Triplett and her husband, Ray, Springfield, and Rick Wampler and his wife, Glenda, Aurora; five great-grandchildren, Travis Wampler and his wife Jennifer, Nixa, Brittany and Stephanie Wampler, Aurora, Malissa Stowe, and Michael Stowe and his wife Leah, all of Nixa; and a great-great-grandson, Ethan Wampler. Funeral services were Tuesday, February 9, in Adams Funeral Home, Ozark, with Dr. Richard Eakins officiating. Burial was in Ozark Cemetery. Visitation was Monday in the funeral home.

Dale Eugene Mitchell was born Nov. 13, 1931, and departed this life July 23, 1934 at the age of 2 years, 8 months and 10 days. He leaves to mourn his departure his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Mitchell, four grandparents, two great-grandfathers and a great-grandmother, other relatives and a host of friends. He’ll be sadly missed in the home and among his friends, but let us not weep as one that has no hope. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the home, conducted by Rev. David O. Mitchell, 70, of Ozark, died at 10 p.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield where he had been a patient the past two weeks. A native of Christian County, he had farmed in Douglas County until moving to Ozark 13 years ago. Surviving are his wife, Cora Jane, of the home; one son, David Otto Jr., Ozark; two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Varble, Lebanon, and Mrs. Betty Wampler, Clever; four grandchildren; two brothers, Calvin, Garrison, Mo., and Buster, Chadwick. Funeral services were at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Harris Chapel of Ozark with the Rev. Roy Shipman officiating. Burial was in Ozark Cemetery.

David Otto Mitchell Jr., age 76, of Great Bend, Kansas, died Sunday, January 3, in Hanston, Kansas. He was born July 19, 1922 and lived near Bradleyville during his youth. He moved to Springfield, and then to Kansas in 1948. Survivors include his mother, Cora Jane Mitchell, and a sister, Betty Wampler, both of Nixa. He was preceded in death by his father, David Otto Mitchell, and a sister, Ruth Varble. A graveside funeral was held at 11 am. Friday, January 8, in Ozark City Cemetery with Rev. Kenneth Bandy officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Adams Funeral Home, Nixa.

Elza M. Mitchell, 92, died at 6:55 a.m. Friday, May 7, in Americana Healthcare Center, Springfield. He was born Jun 15, 1900, in Greene County, the son of George and Eliza Mitchell. He was a resident of Ozark, formerly of Walnut Shade. He was a retired farmer and general store operator, and a member of Sparta First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Grace and Ethel; a grandson, Douglas Campbell; two brothers, Arthur and Ollie Mitchell; and two sisters, Mildred Thornbrough and Dolly Hartzell. Survivors include two sons, Albert Mitchell, Republic, and Leon Mitchell, Ozark; four daughters, Edith Evans and Opal Hughes, Springfield, Edna Campbell and Mildred Forgey, Ozark; sister-in-law Hattie Mitchell, Hollister; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Ethel Pearl Mitchell, 87, Chadwick, Mo., passed away Thursday, April 14, 2005, in St. John's Hospital, Springfield, Mo. Pearl was born Dec. 26, 1917, in Garrison, Mo., the daughter of Francis Marion and Montie (Black) Stevens. On Sept. 13, 1937, Pearl was united in marriage to Clarence Mitchell, and to this union one daughter and three sons were born. Pearl lived her entire life in the Garrison-Chadwick area, and was a longtime member of the Garrison Baptist Church. She was a hard working woman who enjoyed gardening, cooking, and sewing for her family, and being outdoors riding her 4-wheeler. Pearl was a very devoted and loving mother and grandmother. Ultimately she will be remembered for her love and dedication to her family. She touched the lives of everyone she ever met with her optimistic attitude and her love for life. The most cherished and best remembered times of her life have been the "togetherness" of her family. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence; son-in-law, Junior Melton; granddaughter, Jackie Lee; two great-grandchildren; two sisters; and six brothers. Gary Allen Mitchell passed away February 26, 2011, at the age of 55, following a long, hard fought battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Susan; daughter, Whitney Griffin and husband Chad, Republic; daughter, Chelsea Mitchell, Springfield; his parents, Marlin and Alice Mitchell, Benton, Ky; brother, Rodney Mitchell, wife Tami, and their daughter Alyssa, Huntsville, Ala.; sister Cheryl Mitchell, Indianapolis, Ind.; brother Bill Mitchell and wife Renee, Virginia Beach, Va.; grandmother Irene Astin, St. Petersburg, Fla.; cousin, Marcy Leamon and husband Mark, Fort Wayne, Ind. Gary was a lifelong educator. He spent most of his career with the Billings and Republic School Districts. Throughout his career, he served in several different capacities ? classroom teacher, counselor, and high school principal. Outside the classroom, Gary coached several sports, including baseball, softball, basketball, and football. Throughout the years, Gary impacted the lives of hundreds of student athletes, stressing fundamentals and hard work. Gary loved sports, especially baseball and golf. He played college baseball for Missouri State University (formerly Southwest Missouri State) and was an integral part of the 1978 team that went to the College World Series. After his playing days were over, he became an umpire. He umpired hundreds of college games, including several Regionals and a World Series. Gary and Susan enjoyed golfing ? it would be nothing for them to play 36+ holes in a day. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 1, 2011 in Meadors Funeral Home, Republic. George Washington Mitchell was born May 10, 1880, and died July 3, 1947, at the age of 67 years, 1 month and 24 days. He was married to Bertha Guthrie in 1902 and to this union were born six children, one child having preceded him in death two years ago. He is survived by the wife, three daughters, Mrs. Margaret Davis of Fair Grove, Mrs. Hazel White of Marionville, Mrs. Lela Curbow of Hurley; two sons, Andrew and Leon Mitchell of Billings; two sisters, Mrs. Permella Gold of Crane and Mrs. Alta Messenger of Flippin, Ark., other relatives and many friends. He was converted at an early age and joined the Methodist church, living a devoted Christian life until his death. Geraldine Mitchell, age 72, Sparta, passed away January 30, 2009, in her home after a short bout with cancer. She was born July 1, 1936, in Stone County, the daughter of Donald Jacob and Myra (Jackson) Rantz. Geraldine married Dean Mitchell in 1954. Dean preceded her in death on March 5, 1983. Geraldine was a member of First Baptist Church of Sparta. Survivors include three children, Eddie Mitchell and wife, Bobbie, Sparta, Marvin Mitchell and wife, Jan, Sparta, and Teresa McHaffie and fiancé, Randy Sims, Nixa; nine grandchildren, Kandy Dixon, Chasity Shirkey, Clarissa Michael, Kesha Ledford, Cody McHaffie, Clint Mitchell, Hollie Leyland, Corey Mitchell and Cassie Guerin; 15 great grandchildren; two brothers, CC Rantz and wife, Lorene, Cedar Creek, and Kenneth Rantz and wife, Fay, Kissee Mills; a sister, Shirley Finney and husband, Dale, Sparta; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends. Mrs. Ina Mitchell was born January 6, 1896 and died January 20, 1919, from tuberculosis and influenza, her age being 23 years and 14 days. She was married to David Mitchell April 5, 1913. She was converted while very young and joined the Christian church where she lived a true and faithful christian till her death. She leaves her husband and little daughter Fern, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Walker, two brothers and six sisters, besides a host of relatives and friends to mourn her death. Ina will be greatly missed for all who knew her seemed to love her. Funeral services were held at the Swanville cemetery January 21 by Rev. Janet Tatum Mitchell, of Nixa, passed away in her home on Wednesday, January 8, 2003 after a lingering illness. She was born in Jamesville, Missouri on October 22, 1927 to Wade and Lora Blanche (Payne) Tatum. Janet graduated from Nixa High School in 1945 and married Daryl Mitchell on December 3 of that year, following his return from the army. She is survived by her husband, Daryl of the home; four daughters, Myra Massey and husband Randy of Akron, Ohio, Regina Graves and Carmen Robinson of Kansas City, Missouri, and Muerita Scrivner and husband Alan of Mt. Vernon, Missouri; nine grandchildren, Lora Louderback, Nixa, Daphne Fail, Holiday, Florida, Britton Highland, Gulf Breeze, Florida, Brennan Graves and wife Nicole, and Mitchell, Mikelle and Mariah Robinson, all of Kansas City, Kade Scrivner and wife Stacie, and Kami Scrivner, all of Mt. Vernon; a great-grandson, Denver Louderback of Nixa; and her twin sister, Jenna Lemons of Nixa. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, infant brother, one infant grandchild, and brother-in-law, Karl Meyers. Janet was baptized by James Baysinger at the Nixa Church of Christ where she was a member for many years, later placing her membership at Ozark Southside Church of Christ where she was a member at the time of her death. She was a member of the local American Legion and V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliaries. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Adams Funeral Home, Nixa. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 10 in the funeral home. A private interment in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery will follow. The family wishes to thank the chaplain, nurses, caregivers, and volunteers from Southern Care Hospice for all their support during the final weeks of Janet’s illness. Mrs. Jessie Marie Mitchell, 63, of Route 1, Billings, died Thursday night at her home after suffering an apparent heart attack.  Mrs. Mitchell had been a schoolteacher at Hurley for the past 23 years.  She was a member of Union City Nazarene Church.  Surviving are her husband, Andrew; two sons, Charles A., Route 1, Billings, and Paul George, 2819 West Lombard, Springfield; a sister, Mrs. Ester Spoon, Bois D’Arc; three brothers, Thurman Israel and Burnice Israel, both of Thornton, Calif., and Bob Israel, Los Angeles, Calif.; and five grandchildren.  Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Union City Church of the Nazarene with the Revs. Don Parker and W. H. Barnett officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery under direction of Cantrell.

Karen Lee (Meritt) Mitchell was born January 15, 1941, east of Hurley, Mo., to Gordon and Mildred Meritt. On January 14, 1959, she was united in marriage to Charles Andrew Mitchell of Clever, Mo. To this beautiful marriage three wonderful children were born. She was preceded in death by her father in 1999 and her unborn baby in 1977. She is survived by her husband, Charles, Marionville; mother, Mildred Meritt, Hurley; daughter, Susan Mitchell, Marionville; son, Anthony Mitchell and wife, Yvette, Clever; daughter, Christina Osborne and husband, Terry, Nixa; six grandchildren, Javen Mitchell and wife, Ashley, Caeli Mitchell and Jessie McAlister, Racheal and Yvette Marie Mitchell, all of Clever, Terry Lee and Marshall Osborne, Nixa; three great-grandchildren, Javen Andrew Mitchell, Dakota Ray Mitchell, both of Clever and Riley Nicole Dawn Mitchell, due in June; a brother, Laverne Meritt; a sister, Betty Coble and husband, Larry, all of Hurley. Karen was taken from this earth on May 11, 2006. God has given her wings and she will be sick no more. We all will truly miss her very much. Bill Barnett officiating.  Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery under the direction of Meadors of Clever.  Mr. Mitchell was found dead in his home Sunday morning after an apparent heart attack.  He was a farmer, stockman and a lifelong resident of Union City.  Mr. Mitchell was a member of the Union City Church of the Nazarene.  Survivors include two sons, Paul, Springfield, and Charles, Billings; a brother, Leon, Springfield; a sister, Mrs. Lela Curbow, Aurora; and five grandchildren.  The family will be at the funeral home from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. today.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Heart Fund or handicapped children.

Lynn Leroy Mitchell, Sr., 64, of Nixa, died July 20 in his home. Services for Mr. Mitchell were held July 22 at the Harris Funeral Home, Nixa, with the Rev. Joe Wolven officiating. Burial was in Eisenhour Cemetery, Spokane. Mr. Mitchell was born July 16, 4925 in Walnut Shade to James and Mary Mitchell. He worked for 20 years at the Holsum Bakery in Springfield. Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by his parents, by three brothers, Dale, Dean and Leon, and by a sister, Aliene Cundy. He is survived by his son, Lynn Leroy Mitchell, Jr., Nixa; five daughters, Linda Faye Kerwood, of the state of Florida, Melinda Ann Scobee, Springfield, Pamela Sue Rysted, Mount Vernon; Lisa Kay Mitchell, Nixa, and Rose Ellen Mitchell, Mount Vernon; a brother, Roger Glenn Mitchell, Sacramento, California; and four grandchildren.

Martha Alice Mitchell was born Feb. 3, 1866, in Paris, Ill., and passed away at her home in Logan, Mo., June 19, 1945. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jack Redman. She was united in marriage Sept. 22, 1889, to John Henry Mitchell and to this union were born seven children. Her husband and two sons preceded her in death. She was converted at an early age and united with the Christian Union church at Wrights Chapel. She lived a true and devoted Christian life. Survivors include two sons, Leonard Mitchell of Billings and Reggie Mitchell of Springfield; three daughters, Mrs. Rue Wilson of Waynesville, Mo., Mrs. Roy Estes of Marionville, and Mrs. Floyd Estes of Logan; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. E.B. Cloud of Glendale, Calif., and Mrs. A.M. Hayworth of Crane. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon in the Crossroads church and were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Lester Easley. Burial was made in Wrights cemetery under direction of the Maples Funeral Home of Clever.

Orton was born April 30, 1910 in Chadwick, Mo. the son of Thomas C. and Montazella Nelson Mitchell. He was a farmer and he enjoyed raising horses. He lived on Swan Creek most of his life. He was a member of the Garrison Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Marion, John and Clarence Mitchell; and a sister, Lena Raines. Survivors include four sisters, Mary Stevens, Garison, Velma Hobbs, Sparta, Donnie Leming, and her husband, Bill, Ozark, Bonnie Solomon, and her husband, Robert, Chadwick; two sister-in-laws, Pearl Mitchell, Garrison, Hazel Mitchell, Lebanon; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services for Orville Mitchell, 76, of Chadwick, who died Monday at his home after a lingering illness, were at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Garrison Baptist Church, with the Rev. Roy Shipman officiating. Burial was in Swansville Cemetery under direction of Adams-Lakin of Ozark.

Rae Mitchell, 80, of Chadwick, died Jan. 3 at Cox Medical Center South in Springfield. Services for Mrs. Mitchell were held Tuesday at the Garrison Missionary Baptist Church, Garrison, with the Rev. Carl Thompson officiating. Burial was in the Swanville Cemetery, Chadwick, under the direction of Harris Funeral Home, Ozark. Mrs. Mitchell moved to Chadwick from Lutie, Missouri, at the age of 10. She was a member of the Garrison Missionary Baptist Church. Her survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Emma Jean and Don Hughes, of Chadwick; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Donna Kay and Joe Warren, of Ozark; two great-grandchildren, Gayla and Ryan Warren, of Ozark; two sisters; Opal Jones, of Banning, California, and Hazel Vansickle, of Sparta; three brothers; Barry Hobbs and Glenn Hobbs, of Springfield, and Joe Hobbs, of Ava; one sister-in-law, Thelma Hobbs, of Sparta; and an aunt, Mrs. Glessie Stehle, of Ocie.

Services for Robert M. Mitchell, 75, Route 1, Crane, will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Harris Chapel, Ozark with Dwayne Bray officiating. Burial will be in Monger Cemetery near Sparta. Mr. Mitchell died at 8:35 p.m. in Cox Medical Center, Springfield after an illness of several months. A native of Christian County, he was a retired Jasper County deputy sheriff, having served at Carthage for 15 years. He was a member of the Carthage Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Beatrice; one stepson, Robert Bassett, Carthage; two step-daughters, Mrs. Mary June Schupbach, Ozark and Mrs. Jean Barnard, Green Forest, Ark. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Fair Haven Children’s Home, Strafford.

Serena Mitchell, 67, Ozark, Mo., recently passed away. She was retired from French's, and was of the Pentecostal faith. Those preceding her in death include father Archie; mother Myrtle Breedlove; two daughters, Terry and Debbie Beach; and one son, Kenneth Beach. Survivors include children Larry Beach and Katherine Essen; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother Thomas and his wife Geraldine Breedlove; and sisters Voncine and her husband Clarence Abramovitz and Irene Craig. Services were under the direction of Greenlawn Funeral Home North.

Funeral services for T. Martin Mitchell, 68, who died January 15 in a Springfield hospital, were held January 17 at 2:00 p.m. in the Hood Methodist Church at Republic with Rev. Alfred Smith officiating. Burial was in Wright Cemetery south of Clever under direction of Harris Funeral Home of Clever. Mr. Mitchell was born in the Union City community south of Clever where he farmed until moving to Republic in 1943. His wife, the former Birdie Cobb, preceded him in death July 21, 1956. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Naomi Williamson of Phoenix, Ariz and Mrs. Iva Curbow of Springfield; two grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Edith Callison of Tucumcari, N. M.

Thomas Benton Mitchell was born March 22, 1852, and departed this life Nov. 14, 1930, at the age of 78 years, 7 months, and 22 days. His companion passed away just 17 days ago. He was also preceded in death by one son, William. He is survived by one son, Martin Mitchell, of Hurley and two daughters, Mrs. Vina Lehman of Clever and Mrs. Edith Collison of New Mexico. He was a member of the Baptist Church and lived a faithful Christian life. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 2 p.m. at the Cross Roads church with Rev. Riddle officiating. Burial was made in the Wright cemetery under the direction of Wilburn Maples Funeral Home.
