Of their union five children were born, three boys and two girls. For the last three years, she has been afflicted with paralysis which finally resulted in her death. For many years, she has been a consistent member of the Christian church and she passed away peacefully with the hope of a future life. Some time ago, Mrs. Morris clipped the following from a N. Y. paper and added in the margin. “Read this, it is my sentiment” and sent it to her daughter, Mrs. Chas. Webber. “One ting is certain - that death changes nothing except location and standpoint, personality remains untouched. The grave covers no faculty of the soul. I myself will never enter the tomb. Before my body is taken, I shall leave it and it will go alone, it duty duly done its mission ended. I love my body and my parting will not be without a certain kind of sorrow, just as tender associations move me to tears when I move our of an old house in which I have lived for years. But I have joy, also for I leave a worn-out home for a new and better one.” The funeral obsequies were conducted at the Christian  church by A. L. Criley after which the remains were laid tenderly to rest in the city cemetery.

Ex-wife charged in Republic man’s murder

Shooting occurred during argument over children

Amy Brant Republic Monitor

Greene County Prosecutor Darrell Moore filed murder charges Aug. 4 against Rachelle Louise Morris, 25, in the death of her ex-husband and former Republic Alderman Joshua Morris, 28. The man was found with a single gunshot wound to the head Sunday afternoon in J. R. Martin Park in Republic following a 911 call placed to the republic Police Department.

Rachelle Morris was charged in Greene County Circuit Court on two counts - second-degree murder and armed criminal action using a firearm to commit second-degree murder. She is currently being held in the Greene County Jail on a $300,000 bond.

According to information from Republic Police Chief Mark Lowe in a press conference Aug. 4, the investigation determined the shooting occurred during an argument.

“Over the last 24 hours, investigators from Republic Police Department have interviewed quite a number of people, collected evidence, and we have worked on securing several search warrants for the vehicles and other property,” Low said. “We have coordinated our investigation with the Greene County Prosecutor’s Office and provided an affidavit to Mr. Moore detailing our findings.”

In a copy of the affidavit provided by Moore, Republic Police Det. Sgt. David Asher said that Rachell Morris met with her ex-husband and two small children ages 3 and 7, and the park and during an argument over visitation with the children, she took a 9 mm automatic pistol and shot him in the head. She then called the Republic Police dispatcher, hysterically screaming, “Please help me, please help me . . .”

Officers Roger Stewart and Mike Zittle were the first to arrive on the scene and were assisted by the Republic Fire Department personnel who administered medical assistance to the victim. Joshua Morris was transported to Cox South Hospital in Springfield where he was pronounced dead at 1:39 p.m.

Lowe said a 9 mm handgun was recovered at the scene, and the department is working with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to determine its ownership. Greene county Medical Examiner Dr. Douglas Anderson performed an autopsy at noon Aug. 4 and Lowe said a 9 mm slug was recovered from the victim.

In the probably cause statement, Anderson said Joshua Morris died of a single gunshot wound to the head and massive brain trauma that “does not appear to be self-inflicted”. The statement also says that during an interview with Rachelle Morris on the way to the Greene County Jail, she told Asher, “I shot him.”

Lowe said that Rachelle Morris’ car was parked on the gravel lot at the park and Joshua Morris was shot on the passenger side of the vehicle.

Authorities said the couple’s children were in the victim’s vehicle at the scene, which had the motor running at the time.

Lowe said the Morris children have been placed in the custody of the Missouri Department of Children and Family Services.

The couple had divorced earlier this year, and Joshua Morris had custody of the children. He was a resident of Republic and had served as a former Republic Board of Alderman. He was also currently involved in with the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Mayor Brian Buckner, who was a good friend of the victim, said the community had lost a valued member, that Joshua Morris was a very nice individual and was always very thorough in serving his ward as alderman.

Moore, who was also present at the press conference, said the second-degree murder charge is a Class A felony that carries a penalty of 10 to 30 years in the Department of corrections or life; the armed criminal action carries a minimum penalty of three years.

Morrisett, Clyde Elmer 23 Sep 1907 - 5 Jun 1932 CCR 9 Jun 1932 p1

[Note: Son of John Dillard & Lois (Ferguson) Morrisett; married 5 Jun 1926 Alma Allen; married 25 Dec 1929 Lois Mae Workman; strangely enough - when his mother and he were killed in the sams accident, there IS a MO DC for Clyde. Clyde's mother's death certificate is found by Robert Ellingsworth under "Louis Morrisset" and can be found here.

Morrisett funerals held Wednesday. Funeral services for Mrs. J.D. Morrisett of Sparta, and her son, Clyde Morrisett of Ozark, who were killed in the auto accident north of Ozark last Sunday evening, were held at the Sparta Baptist church, Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. A double funeral service was held with Rev. Albert Hanks officiating. The services and burial were under the direction of the Klepper Undertaking Co. A church several times the size of the Sparta church would have been necessary to accommodate the crowd that attended the services. Mrs. Morrisett was a well known and greatly beloved character in her home town of Sparta and her friends, linked by a kindred friendship for Clyde who had lived there so long, were in attendance in great numbers. Added to the host of the Morrisett family friends and relatives at Sparta were those from Ozark. Clyde had identified himself thoroughly and favorably with the fraternal and commercial life of Ozark that he had won for himself an ocean of friends, and they too were in attendance. Being an active member of the Ozark Masonic Lodge, Clyde’s services at the grave were administered over by that order. The lodge attended in a body and almost every member went. The floral offerings were massed in beauty and great profusion, the offering probably being the largest ever seen at a funeral service in this county. The pangs of this lightning like bereavement are too severe upon relatives for us to interview them this week for a complete obituary of Mrs. Morrisett and her son, Clyde, but next week we will have more to say of the lives they had lived in this and to the immediate community. To these anguished souls who mourn, the most sincere sympathy of the community is theirs but at this hour what is meant for consoling and comforting words are only weapons which reopen a grieving soul. May these good people find some thought and see many acts which will comfort and appease their saddened hearts and next week we will speak of the lives their loved ones lived.

Two killed; six injured late Sunday evening. Accident happened near the Wills place north of Ozark on Highway 65. Mrs. J.D. Morrisett of Sparta and son, Clyde, of Ozark die shortly after collision, others injured were J.D. Morrisett and son, Fred, Mrs. Clyde Morrisett and Billy Johnson and occupants of other car, Charles Russell of Willard and Miss Fern Redfearn of Ash Grove, charges will probably be filed. Last Sunday evening about 6:15 o’clock two cars, one a Ford Sedan, having as its occupants, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde-Morrisett and Billy Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fray Johnson, of Ozark, and Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Morrisett and son, Fred, of Sparta, and the other, a Chevrolet coach, carrying Charles Russell of Willard and Miss Fern Redfearn of Ash Grove, collided head on near the Wills place, about a mile and a half north of Ozark on Highway 65. All eight of the occupants of the two cars were injured, Mrs. J.D. Morrisett and her son, Clyde, fatally, dying within a short time after the accident. The others suffered either minor or serious injuries, none of which have as yet proved fatal, although Mr. Russell is in a Springfield hospital suffering with a fractured skull and much concern has been held for his recovery. Miss Redfearn, Mr. Russell’s companion suffered a broken leg. Mrs. Clyde Morrisett and Billy Johnson who were riding in the front seat of the Ford Sedan with Clyde both sustained minor injuries but apparently seem to be recovering nicely and are able to be up. Mr. Morrisett and Fret both suffered just minor injuries consisting of cuts and bruises. The car carrying the Morrisetts was coming south and was taking the curve just west of the Wills place, near the north and had turned out to pass another car when the impact occurred. Joe Chaffin, who lives just east of the scene of the accident, hurried to the crash and assisted by others who stopped as they arrived, spread the alarm of the accident. Ambulances and physicians were notified and in short time the injured were in hospitals either at Ozark or at Springfield. Mr. and Mrs. Fray Johnson rushed their son Billy, to a Springfield hospital where he was given medical attention and we are glad to report that although Billy is confined to his bed he shows improvement and the hope is that he will make a speedy recovery. The populace was deeply saddened when it heard of the injuries received by so many and then when deaths began to take its toll, it was little less than abject remorse that cast its gloom over the community. As we go to press Wednesday afternoon, friends are returning from the funeral held at Sparta at 2:30 o’clock for Mrs. Morrisett and her son and the word comes that it was without doubt the largest funeral service ever held in Christian county. Conservative estimates place the number that attempted to gain entrance to the little church at Sparta at 1500 and this number was augmented by the large number who merely went to the cemetery knowing they would be unable to find room in the church. Word also comes at press time that the injured are all well on the road to recovery and are all out of danger. It is understood the accident has been fully and carefully investigated by the authorities and from reports that reach us action will be taken in the matter, against the driver of the Chevrolet coach, who, as the evidence shows as accumulated by investigators, made an unlawful attempt to pass another car on the hill and curve in direct violation of the highway traffic rules and regulations.

In memory of Clyde. Just as the tones of his music have melted into the minds and hearts of those who heard so did the upright traits and characteristics of Clyde Morrisett weave themselves about the lives of those with whom he mingled. On Wednesday afternoon of last week when the cortege formed on the south side of the square to accompany the two funeral coaches which carried the remains of Clyde and his mother to Sparta for funeral services and burial, it was a procession of sixty cars, each carrying a group of sorrowing friends and relatives. Those who gathered at the church in Sparta and at the cemetery numbered at least fifteen hundred, making of it undoubtedly, the largest gathering of its kind in the history of the county. These facts are stated to prove that the love and esteem, the fellowship and companionship, felt for those whose lives had been snuffed out so suddenly in that tragedy of the Sunday evening before, just north of Ozark, were of keenness and deep affection. As we speak of those outstanding traits of Clyde Morrisett, we have no desire to neglect those of his mother, but let our meaning suffice, that those of her who gave him birth, are exemplified in the son, thereby giving a double meaning to the things we might say, applicable to both son and mother. Clyde Morrisett’s life was one of music, both in principle and precept. In his business and social life he lived an environment that was soothing to enjoy. As he mingled with his associates he displayed a disposition that was magnetic. He was attentive to his responsibilities. As he loved to create an atmosphere of musical inspiration with his violin or his banjo, so he likewise loved to display a sunny personality to his friends and associates. He always greeted those he met with a smile and a word of cheer. His words were always kind and considerate. There was nothing selfish in his life. To his employer he gave a devotion that was sincere; to his loved kin his was a sacrifice for their happiness and to his friends and brethren in fraternity he gave an understanding as basic as the Galilean principles of the brotherhood of men. Clyde’s life may have ended in his early years as in the twinkling of an eye, but his concepts of life will be remembered by his loved ones and friends as long as they may have the power of intellect. And after all, nothing is grander than such living. Who would desire a monument of gold or silver, or yet of pure granite set with rubies and glittering diamonds, in preference to the monument of love, affection, esteem, friendship and brotherhood, such as Clyde Morrisett built with his short life of 24 years, in the hearts and minds of those with whom he mingled. The voice of his violin may have been stilled, but in the mental chambers of those who knew him, there will always echo the sweet musical companionship of his life.
