But this hurts so bad, it’s crazy man. We all love you more than you know. Your passion for life was inspiring,. I’m glad you know. Watch over is and help us live better. Our family so close knit, just like a sweater. To know Cody was to love him and he loved everyone. We can’t imagine life without you, we love and miss you forever. - Mom, Dad and Family

Buffalo woman’s persistence helps solve murder

Becky Casteel communicated by mail with Brown, Nobles’ accused killer

Paul Casteel Buffalo Reflex

Caption: John David Brown stands accused of murdering Mary Ellen Nobles. Brown admitted to killing Mary Ellen Nobles to her daughter.

Becky Casteel always believed that John David Brown murdered her mother, Mary Ellen Nobles, whose last name was Stafford when she lived in Dallas County during the 1970’s and early 1980s.

He instincts may prove to be correct as Brown was charged on July 7 with killing Nobles after fragments of a skull were found in a pond in a wooded area near Fort Leonard Wood in Pulaski County. The fragments were positively identified as those of Nobles, Pulaski County Sheriff J. B. King announced at a press conference in St. Robert Monday morning.

King also said in his probably cause statement that Brown had confessed on three different occasions to killing Nobles in 1985.

Brown and Nobles had left Buffalo together in the early 1980’s and Nobles was reported missing in August of 1985 when Casteel was 8 years old. The body of Nobles, who was 26 at the time, has never been found.

Most likely, the skull never would have been discovered either if it hadn’t been for the determined efforts of Casteel, who lives in Buffalo.

In the summer of 2004, Casteel began communicating by mail with Brown, who is serving a life sentence without parole in the state prison in Jefferson City for the murder of a Waynesville cemetery caretaker in 1987. Casteel wrote Brown on the pretext of wanting to find out more about her mother, and one day her persistence paid off.

“I never did come right out and ask him if he had murdered my mom,” she said. “But finally he wrote that he did kill her.”

Casteel notified Dallas County Sheriff Mike Rackley in April of 2005, who in turn called Pulaski County Sheriff J. b. King. Fourteen months later, following an intense, cooperative effort by the Pulaski and Dallas County sheriffs’ departments an detectives from the Lebanon Police Department, fragments of Nobles skull were found in a pond on June 27.

Rackley, King and Lori Robinson, a Lebanon detective, talked with Brown on two occasions and obtained a confession each time, according to King. Brown confessed another time in the presence of King and Detective Don Hayden of the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department, King said.

In the probably cause statement, King said that Brown admitted on June 6, 2005, that he had shot and killed Nobles on Aug. 25, 1985. Brown said the location of the murder was in a wooded area off Rt. E in southern Pulaski County.

Brown further admitted that he had shot Nobles in the back of the head with a 9 mm pistol. He said he had “busted up” Nobles skull and jaw bones in a small pond near the murder site.

In a later conversation, Brown said that if law enforcement officials dug up the pond, they would find the skull pieces, according to King.

On May 22 and 23, excavation equipment was used and 21 students mostly from forensic classes at the University of Missouri-Columbia and Columbia college, got out in the pond, dug through the deep mud and found the fragments. This included the complete lower jaw with teeth intact. Dental records proved that the fragments belonged to Nobles.

“I’m glad to finally know what happened,” Casteel said. “We didn’t even know for sure whether my mother was dead or alive.

Although her last known area address was Bolivar, Nobles whose maiden name was Massey, attended public schools in Buffalo and later married Roger Stafford, of Buffalo. This union produced a daughter, Becky, but the couple’s marriage eventually ended in divorce. It is unclear where the name Nobles came from.

Brown attended the third, fourth and fifth grades at Bolivar, then attended school off and on in the Buffalo school system from the seventh through the ninth grades from 1967-69. As a youth in Buffalo, Brown was constantly in trouble with the law.

Brown apparently spent much of the 1970s in Dallas County. His visible residence in the county ended in 1983 after his conviction on a burglary charge.

According to Dallas county Circuit Court records, Brown was charged in August of 1983 with two counts of burglary and possession of an explosive weapon. The charges were filed in connection with a Feb. 6, 1983, burglary at Shewmaker Auto Parts and a Feb. 15, 1983 burglary at Buffalo Building Supply. The explosives charge stemmed from the discovery of explosives in his Buffalo residence in March.

Brown and Nobles were together in an apartment in Kansas City when law enforcement officials arrested him and found rifles and other merchandise stolen in the burglary of the Wal-Mart store in Bolivar.

Brown pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary in Poly County Circuit Court in 1984 for burglarizing Wal-Mart in 1983. He was sentenced to four years in prison.

Brown was sent to Dallas County on Aug. 17, 1983, to face burglary and explosive charges. Through a plea agreement, one burglary charge and the explosive charge were dropped. Brown entered a plea of guilty to a Class C felony charge for the Shewmaker burglary. In a signed statement, he admitted to burglarizing the businesses with two accomplices.

He was convicted and sentenced to four years, to run concurrently with the Polk County sentence.

But, he spent less than eight months in prison before he escaped from Ozarks Corrections Center near Fordland on June 2, 1984. This was only 11 days after he had been transferred to the minimum security facility.

Nobles had contacted the office of then Polk County Prosecutor Charles Ankrom in 1985 in regards to a police raid where Brown had been but was not found. A short time later she disappeared, according to Ankrom. Nobles car was recovered several months later in a Lebanon parking lot.

In the spring of 1987, Brown was the subject of one of the biggest and longest manhunts in modern Missouri history after he allegedly shot a Rolla police officer who discovered the pickup truck that Brown had reportedly stolen. The manhunt made the news nationally.

In 1989 Brown was convicted of the murder of Claude Long, a church caretaker in Pulaski County, while he was on the run in 1987.

Brown was finally arrested on June 27, 1987 at a motel in Ada, Okla.
