The community this week is saddened by the passing of one of its outstanding characters, Mrs. Rowena Park. Following a steady decline in vitality and strength, she passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R.R. Tunnell, on Monday evening, April 28, at about 10 o’clock. She was born Feb. 14, 1949, in Kirksville, Ohio, so at the time of her passing she was 81 years, 2 months and 14 days of age. She was united in marriage to Warren S. Park on April 23, 1872, and to this union five daughters and two sons were born. They are Mrs. R.R. Tunnell of this city, and Mr. Arthur Park. She came to Missouri in 1885 and has lived in or near Ozark ever since. She became a member of the Methodist church in her early girlhood but later joined the Presbyterian church in Ozark, where she has held a constant membership. The funeral service3s were held Wednesday after at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian church with Rev. Briggs of Springfield, officiating with burial in the Ozark cemetery under the direction of B.C. Klepper. The charter of this obituary has been a flowering personality in the life of the community. Next week we will tell you more about this woman’s life.
AND
Park, Rowena S. (Rugh) 14 Feb 1849 - 28 Apr 1930 CCR 8 May 1930
‘Twas Valentine Day, Feb. 14, 1849, at Kirksville, Ohio, that John S. Rugh and Catherine Clifton were made happy by the birth of their sixth child and fifth daughter. She was given the name of Rowena S. She prattled through her babyhood with a happiness that always brought a sweet remembrance of her birthday. She blossomed into girlhood and womanhood with a sweetness which endeared her to the hearts of all. In school at Columbus, Ohio, she became an outstanding student and later taught two successful terms of school near the place of her birth. The loveliness of her character attracted the affection of Warren G. Park and on April 23, 1872, he became the victor in his wooing and this lovely young woman took that solemn oath which was to make of her the mother of his children and his thoughtful and helping companion “until death do you part.” To this union seven children were born and the happy family felt no the pang of death until at the age of 20 years the first was called away to break the family ties. Since that hour the Grim Reaper has walked sudden like or still into her life and this companion and mother lived to taste the bitterness of death to husband and five of her offspring. In the year 1885, first considerate of him whom she had oathed to honor and cherish, she came to Ozark in the hope that the change would be of benefit to her husband’s health. Here she established a home that became a shining light to the community. And into it there crept the joys of birth and the sorrows of death. At the age of 18, Rowena S. Rugh made her confession in Christ and became a member of the Methodist church, but after coming to Ozark, the broadness of her character and the sincerity of her belief in a unity of home caused her to affiliate with her husband in his Presbyterian faith. Her duties and obligation to her home did not overshadow her responsibility to her neighborhood and her community and she was extremely interested in all things which made for closer companionship with friends and the betterment of the community through a mutual understanding of the beauties in her friends and not their faults. She became a member of the Ladies Literary Club and was active in its administration until her ill health prevented and then she was voted a life member in appreciation of the services she had rendered to the community through her attentiveness to her club. On April 3, 1916, she suffered the loss of her companion and from that time she has visioned in a sweet, appreciative way the time when she too would answer the call and greet the loved ones gone before. The hour of her death on April 28, 1930, at the home of her only surviving daughter, Mrs. R.R. Tunnell of this city, was not an hour of regret for her; ‘twas not an hour to fear nor a moment at which to shed a tear, but to her ‘twas an hour of happiness in the hope of loved associations formed anew. Those last services over the remains of this woman who had lived such a wonderful life of sacrificial giving to her family and her friends were held at the Presbyterian church in Ozark with Rev. Briggs speaking in his eloquent and touching manner. A solo by her lifelong friend, Mrs. Howe Steele and a quartet by her club associates, Mrs. J.W. Alderman, Mrs. L.K. Ellis, Mrs. W.L. Hixson and Mrs. Howe Steele were musical numbers fitting the services. The mass of beautiful floral offerings was a silent but touching and effective message of love and affection She entered the grave beside her husband and a daughter to rest in eternity sleep content, reposed and self-assigned to the hereafter by an established faith in the true realities of what’s beyond. And so Rowena S. Rugh lived her life in true accord with the meaning of the day on which she was born and she died as Rowena S. Park, cherished, loved and reverenced as a mother, esteemed and honored as a friend and nothing more can be said; nothing can be grander than such living; except the greatness and the grandeur of the spiritual reward of such living.

Did you ever think as you strive for gold That a dead man’s hand a dollar can’t hold? You may pinch and tug, you may strive and save, But you’ll lose it all when you reach the grave.

Jerry D. Parr, 28, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Parr, killed himself at 10:15 Thursday morning at the family home at Sparta, as Sheriff Clay Hodges and two deputies approached in response to a call from the boy’s father. Sheriff Hodges and Deputies Lige Reed and Lonnie Bridges entered the house and found the body of Parr on the floor, the top of his head virtually blown off by a charge from a 20-ga. double-barrel shotgun. His act is thought to have been brought on by a recurrence of a mental condition he had suffered previously. He had been confined in a mental institution some time ago, it was reported. Acting Coroner M.R. Logan was immediately summoned and he declared the death suicidal. Funeral arrangements are incomplete pending word from distant relatives. The Chaffin Funeral Home at Ozark has charge of the body.

Roger Parr Killed
One of those unfortunate holiday happenings occurred Thanksgiving day on the Joel T. Morris farm, one-half mile north of Sparta, when Roger Parr, 17 year old son of W. L. Parr, was shot and almost instantly killed. The story of the killing seems considerably mixed; at first it being given out that young Parr had accidentally shot himself, but later developments rather discountance this story. After the shooting, Coroner Wise of Sparta summoned a jury and heard what little evidence the boys who had to give who were with the boy and the jury at once returned a verdict of accidental killing. One of the strange things reported is, that a jury was summoned and the work commenced before Mr. Parr, the father, could return from near Bradleyville where he and other members of the family were spending Thanksgiving. The jury after viewing the remains and hearing the testimony of Joe Stone, Homer Gardner and a small boy by the name of Bricker, who were with young Parr at the time, returned a verdict of accidental killing. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon and later another investigation was started by the father and evidence developed showing the boy had probably been killed by one of his companions. An examination of the guns, shot, etc. developed that young Parr had a 28 gauge gun with No. 4 shot, while and examination of the wound revealed that he had been shot with no. 8 shot. This aroused suspicion and a further examination of the Bricker boy revealed that Parr and Gardner had been engaged in some altercation about some rabbits they had killed and were dividing, and that he did not know who killed Parr, but when he heard the shot and looked around, smoke was coming from Gardner’s gun. This with other threads of evidences causes a complaint to be lodged against Gardner Monday night before Justice J. M. Williams, of Ozark, charging manslaughter. Constable James went to Sparta and arrested Gardner who was brought to Ozark and arraigned before Justice Williams who fixed his bond at $1,000 pending a preliminary hearing December 16.

Parson, Barney & family died Oct 1906 CCR 18 Oct 1906 p1
[Note: Texas County, MO farmer was shot then beaten to death; his wife and their children ages 7, 4 and 1, were all beaten to death by a neighbor, Joda Hamilton who became upset about the terms for his buying the crops of the Parson family who were moving back to a former home in north Missouri; then he dumped the bodies in the Big Piney]
Ghastly Deed - Whole Family Are Killed - Texas County Furnished Most Dastardly Murder Known to Criminal Records
An extra of Springfield republican contains details of the most revolting under ever committed in Southwest Missouri. Below we give a clipping from the dispatch to the Republican. Full particulars of a most atrocious quintuple murder that has shocked Texas county to its very depths have just come to light and the reported self-confessed murderer of an entire family, father, mother and three children of tender years is now behind the bars in Houston, guarded by a large force of deputies instructed to guard the prisoner from all hazards. Barney Parson, his wife and three children aged respectively 7, 4 and one years old, who have been living on a farm north of Houston were the victims of the dastardly crime and Joda Hamilton, a farmer who also lives near Houston, is in jail and is reported to have confessed to the killing of five persons. Parson, who came to Texas county some two years ago, had been a renter on a small farm north of Houston. A few days ago, he decided to return to his former home in the northern part of the state and began to make arrangements, He sold the crops on his farm to Hamilton and some disagreement arose over the terms of the sale. Just what the trouble between the two is not known, but no one in the community expected that there would ever be any serious outcome to the quarrel. After completing his arrangement for departure to his former home, Parson packed his household goods on a farm wagon, and with his family, started Friday morning to drive overland to his old home. He was driving a team of mules and one of these proved to be the means of vengeance that brought the alleged slayer of the five into the clutches of the law. The family, driving along slowly are suddenly confronted in a lone and forbidding spot in the road, a man armed with a double barreled shotgun. Without a word of warning, he raised the weapon, aiming at Parson, discharged both barrels in rapid succession. The farmer, riddled with shot, fell to the ground and his slayer rushed to his victim and repeatedly clubbed him over the head with the butt end of his gun. The rest of the family, horror stricken at the sight, could do nothing to assist the father. After being sure the head of the family was lifeless, the slayer turned his attention to the mother and heedless of her agonized cries, beat her upon the head until she too was lifeless. The little children, not one of them scarcely old enough to realize the awfulness of the situation, fell easy victim to the club of the blood-mad murderer. One after another, their brains were literally beaten out by the frenzied slayer, deaf to their entreaties and whose heart had seemingly turned to stone. After his work of death had been accomplished, the murderer systematically turn his attention to removing all traces of his awful crime from the place. He gathered together the bodies of his five victims and then loaded them in the wagon in which just a short time before had started to return them to the old home in the northern part of the state. Thrown Into River. Climbing into the wagon with his load of bloody bodies, the slayer drove to the Big Piney creek about a mile distant from the scene of the bloody work. The road was lonely and he was not accosted by any one to wonder how he came to be in charge of the team and wagon of a man who was known to have started to another part of the state. After reaching the stream, the bodies of the victims were dumped into the water like so much trash, no attempt being made to weight them so they would sink out of sight and thus insure a longer wait until they should be found and the attention of the officers attracted to the crime. Having disposed of the bodies, the murderer drove to his own home seemingly oblivious to the fact that the possession of the wagon and team would direct suspicion to himself. Nothing was known of the crime nor was it suspected until more than a day had elapsed. A party of fisherman from Houston were at Bender’s dam No. 2 on the Big Piney, Saturday fishing and about noon, they found the bodies of two children floating just above the dam. The bodies were taken from the water and recognized as being the Parson children. Foul play was at once suspected and a thorough search was instituted to see if the bodies of any more of the family could be found. In a short time, two more bodies were found, the report from Houston saying the bodies next discovered were those of the parents. The officers at Houston, the county seat of Texas county, were immediately notified and given the full particulars of the finding of four bodies.
