Pearce, Edith Elizabeth (Wampler) 25 Dec 1902 - 20 Feb 1931 CCR 26 Feb 1931 p1

[Note: Daughter of William W. & Laura Belle (Smith) Wampler; married 24 Jan 1931 Lawrence W. Pearce 31 May 1903 - 16 May 1970]

Woman dies from gasoline burns. Cleaning clothes with gasoline in room where there was fire, resulted in tragic death of Mrs. Edith Pearce of Clever last week. A tragic death occurred last week at Clever when Mrs. Edith Wampler-Pearce died as a result of burns sustained when gasoline, with which she was cleaning clothes, ignited from the fire of an oil stove. Her clothing was entirely burned off her body and she lived in extreme agony from Wednesday until Friday. Mrs. Pearce was 28 years old and had been married but one day over a month. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Will Wampler of Clever. About a month before the accident she was married to Lawrence Pearce. She was in the rear room of the Wampler Café and Soda Fountain cleaning a dress with gasoline, when the accident happened. It is thought that the fumes of the gasoline ignited from the fire in an oil stove, which was burning in another part of the room. Before aid could reach her, her clothing was a mass of flames. She lived from Wednesday until about 10:30 Friday morning. She became unconscious at about 5 o’clock the day of her death. The funeral services were held Sunday at Clever with Rev. Harpe of Willow Springs officiating. Burial was made in the Wisehill Cemetery under the direction of the T.W. Maples Funeral Home of Clever.

AND

Pearce, Edith Elizabeth (Wampler) 25 Dec 1902 - 20 Feb 1931 CCR 5 Mar 1931 p6

Edith Wampler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Will Wampler of this city, was born Dec. 25, 1902, and answered the call of death at her father’s home in Clever Friday morning, Feb. 20, 1931, at about 10:30, after suffering from burns which she had received Wednesday evening about 6 o’clock. She was in the rear of the Café and had gasoline in a vessel cleaning a dress and from some unknown reason the gasoline caught fire. There was an oil stove burning in the room but it is not known just how the fire was started. She picked the pan up and started for the front of the store, going through a partition door, and the flames spread so rapidly she dropped the pan between the lunch counter and the wall and in getting out over the fire her clothing caught fire and she was severely burned. She was taken home and Dr. L.E. Williams summoned to treat the burns. At first it was not thought to be serious, but she became unconscious about 5 a.m., Friday morning and death came as a terrible shock to everyone, at 10:30 Friday morning. Edith was born at Boaz, and at the age of 10 years she, with her parents, moved to Clever, where she spent the remainder of her life and although but 28 years, 1 month and 25 days of age at the time of her death, her disposition and kindly ways had won for her a friendship which now causes a community to mourn. After completing Clever high school she assisted at the Clever post office for several years, but for the past two years she had been assisting her father in a café and soda fountain. Edith was a lover of music and took a great interest in it. She was called upon continuously to render her service in music for churches and schools and delighted in doing her part. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She was a member of the Methodist church at Clever and was active in church work. Just about one month ago she was married to Lawrence Pearce, son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Pearce of Clever, although they had not publicly announced their wedding. Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church. Services were conducted by Rev. Harpe of Willow Springs. It was estimated that 1200 people attended the services. Interment was made in the Wise Hill cemetery under the direction of T.W. Maples Funeral Home of Clever. She is survived by the husband, father and mother; two brothers, Harold of Clever and Guy of Reeds Springs, and two sisters, Grace and Helen of Clever.
