Funeral services for W. F. “Bill” Perryman, 82, of rural Nixa, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Harris Chapel in Nixa, with the Rev. Joseph Fahl officiating. Burial will be in Payne Cemetery. Mr. Perryman, a longtime resident of this area, died at 8:35 p.m. Tuesday in Fremont Manor. He was a retired dining car inspector for the Wabash Railway Company. Surviving are his wife, Florence; and two half-sisters, Mrs. Rena Bledsoe, Wichita and Mrs. Flossie Metzger, Enid, Okla.

William Joe “Billy” Perryman, 71, Springfield, died at 3:43 a.m. Sunday, August 12, 2001, in his home.  He was born August 10, 1930, in Springfield, Mo., the son of William Joseph and Ethel (Miller) Perryman.  He retired from Ash Grove Lime Company in Galloway, Missouri.  Preceding him in death were his father and stepfather.  He is survived by his wife, Betty, of the home; five sons, Bud Perryman, Texas, Allen Perryman, California, Marvin Perryman, Springfield, Junior Brayfield and his wife, Dianne, and Jimmy Brayfield, all of Springfield; three daughters, Linda Hayes, Vermont, Patty Hill and her husband, Larry, Rogersville, and Connie Matthews and her husband, Mike, Springfield; his mother, Ethel Grandstuft, Springfield; four brothers, Buddy and Larry, Bois D’Arc, Jerry, Slater, Mo., and Lloyd, Nixa; five sisters, Josephine Hurd, Bonnie Boatright, Norma Perry, Sherley Marler and Peggy Carroll, all of Springfield; 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.  Funeral services were at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, August 16, 2001, at Meadors Funeral Home, Republic, with the Rev. Jerry Humble officiating.  Burial was in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Clever.  Visitation was Wednesday 6-8 p.m. in the funeral home.

Helen Marie Personne, 70, Springfield, died Sunday, May 17 at St. John's Regional Health Center in Springfield. , She was born June 29, 1921, in Wichita; Kan., the daughter of Orville and Mamie Curtis. She was married to Wayne Personne on Aug. 22, 1942. She was employed a secretary at Boeing Aircraft in Wichita for 32 years before moving to this area 16 years ago. She was a member of Hopedale Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband; three sons and their wives, Dean and Linda Personne, Boulder, Colo., David and Linda Personne, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Danny and Brenda Personne, Denver, Colo.; a brother, Carrol Curtis, Lampe; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Services will be held Wednesday, May 20 at 2 p.m. at Hopedale Baptist Church with Pastor Terry Kendrick officiating. Burial will be in Hopedale Cemetery under the direction of Adams Funeral Home. Christina Lynn Pesek, 58, Rogersville, Mo., passed away at 8:25 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2004, in her home. She was born June 30, 1945, in St. Louis, Mo., to George W. and Lorraine Finley. She was united in marriage to Jim Pesek on July 11, 1964. Christina was a member of the American Indian Cultural Society. Chris, You have gone from my sight for now. Louis Doden officiated.  Airman Apprentice Peterman was lost off the carrier Enterprise last Monday in the Pacific after apparently falling overboard. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Lawrence Manning, 1914 Cherry Street Court, Springfield and his step-father, Lawrence Manning; a brother and sister, Larry and Saundra, of the home; another sister, Mrs. Anita Berglund, Key West, Fla.; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Peterman, Marshall, and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph McCallister, Marshall. Lari Anne Burke Peters, 31, Ozark, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1993 from injuries resulting from an automobile accident. She was born Oct. 6, 1961. She was a 1980 graduate of Aurora High School. On July 30, 1993 she married Joseph Mark Peters. Until recently, she was employed by Baxter Bulletin in Mountain Home, Ark., as a sales representative. She was a member of Twin Lakes Baptist Church, Mountain Home, Ark. Charles Eugene (Chuck) Peterson, Springfield, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011, at Cox Medical Center in Springfield, after a courageous battle with cancer. Visitation will be held Wednesday, Sept. 7, from 6-8 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Loran Fawcett Funeral Home in Neodesha, Kan. Services will be held Thursday, Sept. 8, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Neodesha with Pastor Dave Cheshier officiating. Burial followed at Neodesha Cemetery. Peterson was born March 3, 1939, in Rock Island, Ill. He spent his childhood in Delmar, Iowa, and after graduating from Iowa State University, started a career in sales and purchasing. Over the years, he worked for Allis-Chalmers, US Gypsum, Bay Vett, Cobalt Boats and retired after 22 years at Tracker Boats in Springfield. Peterson was married to Sharon DeLong. Together they raised four children, Paula, Karla, David, and Sarah, all of whom graduated from Neodesha High School. Chuck enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, traveling, and boating and relaxing at “the cabin” at Grand Lake in Oklahoma. His mother Myrtle Parks, preceded Chuck in death. His wife Sharon, his children and their spouses, survive him: Paula and Tom Wright, Republic; Karla and Wade Stepp, Cincinnati, Ohio; David and Jennifer Peterson, Independence, Kan.; and Sarah Garbee, Billings. He’s also survived by a sister, Roberta Schwartz, Clinton, Iowa, 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

His mother preceded him in death. Terry was a cattle buyer and a former cattle sale barn owner and operator. On March 3, 1996, he and his wife, Tonia Renee, were married. Walter W. Peterson Jr., 68, Billings, died at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 25, 2005, in St. John's Hospital, Springfield. He was born December 27, 1936, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the son of Walter W. Sr. and Lillian V. (Lane) Peterson. Mr. Peterson was united in marriage to Phyllis Murrill on February 4, 1980, in Miami, Oklahoma. He served his country in the United States National Guard, and retired from Yellow Freight after 28 years of service. Mr. Peterson was a member of the Grace Community Church in Mt. Vernon, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a great grandson, Cain Woznick. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Phyllis; five children and their spouses, Roxanne and Larry Eldridge, Walter III and Kenna Peterson, Vicki and Charles Button, Diana and Darren Collins, and Michael and Melissa Murrill; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Patricia and John Hreha, Riverside, California; a brother and his wife, Ted and Jan Fox, Verona; three nephews; other relatives, and many friends. Pfc. Curtis Wayne Petree, 21, of Twenty-Nine Palms, California, formerly of Springfield, was killed in a training accident Nov, 30. Services for Pfc. Petree were held Dec. 9 al Greenlawn North Chapel with the Rev. Billy Burris officiating. The eulogy was delivered by Jerry Gregg, assistant principal of Hillcrest High School. Burial with military honors conferred by the Inspector instructor Staff Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 24th Marine Division, was in Springfield National Cemetery. Born in Sedalia Aug. 22, 1967, Mr. Petree graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1986. Given a certificate of acceptance from the U.S. Marine Corps, he left in March of 1987 for his basic training in San Diego, California. He was stationed in Twenty-Nine Palms, California. U.S. 65 Auto Crashed Continue the Carnage

Most recent in the series of auto accident on U.S. 65 eight miles north, have left four persons dead and five others with serious injury. Four were killed instantly at 11:50 a.m. Tuesday in a head-on collusion near the railroad crossing a half mile north of the 65-14 junction. Dead at the scene were Homer Woodall, 70, North Little Rock, Ark.; his wife, Mable, 79, Charles Vidan, 50, of Granite City, Ill, and Lyllana Petrovic, 45 of Paris, France. Still in “fair” condition Thursday morning in St. John’s Hospital is Mrs. Mildena Vidan, 49 of Granite City while her son, Michael, 14, remains in “critical” condition. Miss Carla Mueller, 14, granddaughter of the Woodall couple is in satisfactory condition. The tragedy occurred in a  straightaway portion of the highway when Woodall, northbound, pulled into the opposite lane to pass and the opposite lane to pass and struck the Vidan auto headon.

Tom (Elisha Thomas) Pettijohn born February 3, 1856, died at his home near Vernonia Oregon, April 30, 1925 of apoplexy. Burial May 1st. Mr. Pettijohn leaves a family consisting of the wife and four children, Thelma, ages 20, teacher of the Pettijohn school; Norman, aged 15; Gean, aged 10 and Elzo, aged 5 years; two brothers, Jim and Will and three sisters, Mrs. Annie Tunnell of Ozark, Mrs. Ellen Hughes and Mrs. Lina Fautze. The older citizens of Ozark community will remember Tom Pettijohn as son of John McPettijohn, Christian County’s first Recorder and Clerk. The Pettijohn family came here from Ohio in 1818, traveling the entire distance by river in flat boats.

A telegrams was received Thursday morning by T. B. Walker from Afton, Okla, announcing the death of Mr. Pettijohn of that place late Wednesday evening. The remains will be shipped to Ozark for burial and are expected on the morning train. Services will be conducted by Prof. John R. Roberts of Springfield, a life time friend of the deceased. The remains will be laid to rest in the Young cemetery west of town. Mr. Pettijohn for years was a resident of Ozark and vicinity and will be remembered by all old timers. He left here some 12 years ago and took up his residence in Oklahoma. He was a brother of Mrs. J. L. Tunnell and was about 76 years old.

Clayton L. Pettipiece passed away February 29, 2008, four days after his 79th birthday, in Cox South Hospital. He was born February 25, 1929, in Rushville, Neb., to Clarence and Vivian Pettipiece. In 1946, Clayton graduated from high school in Crawford, Neb. He served as a parachutist in the Army from 1950 to 1952. Clayton received his doctor of medicine from the University of Nebraska in 1958. He then served as a general practitioner in Sidney and Shenandoah, Iowa. In 1967, he moved to Omaha, Neb., and completed a residency in psychiatry, specializing in children and adolescents. Clayton established and served as Medical Director of Nebraska's first Community Mental Health Center in Immanuel Hospital in Omaha. Clayton was united in marriage to Julia Hopkins on January 17, 1981. Together they had a daughter, Allison. Clayton moved his family to the Springfield area in 1984, and retired from the United States Bureau of Prisons Medical Center in 1991. He was subsequently employed by Community Hospital and Lakeland Regional Center. Up until the time of his death, Clayton was employed in private practice at Murrell Counseling Services. Preceding him in death were his parents; his brother Kenneth and a grandson. Clayton is survived by his wife, Julia and their daughter, Allison, of the home; sons, Kurt and wife, Mary Beth of Thermopolis, Wyo. and Jay and wife, Jan of Boulder, Colo.; daughter Kimanne of Branson, Mo.; brothers, Duane and wife, Carrol and Jerry and wife, Edith; sisters, Wanda, Juanita Voorhees and Mary Jane and husband, Tom Augustine; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and numerous other family members. Clayton enjoyed golfing at Fremont Hills, poker games with close friends, fishing and hunting. He especially appreciated his past 24 years of country living in the Ozarks. Clayton will be remembered as a loving husband and father, a loyal friend and caring psychiatrist. Visitation will be this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel and a memorial service will be Monday, March 3, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. If desired, memorial contributions are suggested to the Christian County Humane Society, in care of the funeral home or the charity of the donor's choice. The family would like to extend their appreciation for the care and thoughtfulness of Dr. Robert Carolla, Dr. Terry Coulter and the nursing staff of Cox South.

Funeral services for Jacob Clinton Pettit, 90, of Petelo were conducted Monday afternoon in the Spring Hill Church with the Rev. Roy Shipman officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill cemetery under direction of the Chaffin Funeral Home. Mr. Pettit died Saturday. He is survived by six children, Ada Mae, William Reese, Stevie Clinton, Edward Bertie, Walcie Jane, and Robert Lenard; 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was born April 24, 1860, at Republic, and spent the greater part of his boyhood around Springfield. He married Matilda Elizabeth Underdown March 17, 1881, and to them eight children were born, two of whom are deceased. He was a member of the Baptist Church.

Lela May Pettit, 96, Ozark, passed away Friday, June 22, 2001, in Ozark Riverview Manor. She was born May 3, 1905, in Lewistown, Mo., the daughter of Elmer and Affie (Levengood) Thrasher. She was married to Bert Pettit who preceded her in death. Two brothers, Sterling and Emert Thrasher, also preceded her in death. Survivors include: two sons and their wives, Robert E. and Betty Pettit, Ozark, and William V and Marlene Pettit, El Paso, Texas; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and a close nephew, John Clausen, and his wife, Jean, St. Louis. A graveside service was Monday, June 25, in Hopedale Cemetery, north of Ozark, with Rev. Ray Cartwright officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Adams Funeral Home, Ozark.

Mrs. Mary E. Pettit died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Winslow in Sparta, Feb. 6, aged 67 years. She was brought to the Ozark Undertaking Co. funeral home and her body prepared for burial by T.B. Chaffin. Funeral services were held Feb. 11 in the Sparta Baptist church at 11 a.m. and the remains shipped to Ellmeo, Ill., for burial.

Ruth Pettit, 78, died Friday in Ozark Nursing and Care Center following a long illness. A former Kansas resident, she had lived in Christian County since 1939. Mrs. Pettit was previously employed by Ozark Area Community Action Corp. (OACAC). She was a member of the Chadwick Union Church and Ozark Chapter No. 98 of the Order of the Eastern Star. She is survived by her husband, Vester C.; a son, John Brown, Springfield; a daughter, Mary Fuller, Sparta; three stepchildren, Bill and Jerry Pettit and Blanche Stevens, all of the state of Washington; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Floyd Stanley Brown. Services were held Tuesday in Adams Funeral Home with the Rev. James "Hobo" Applegate officiating. Burial was in Chadwick Memorial Cemetery.

Betty R. Pettus, 75, Springfield, Mo., passed away at 6:05 A.M., Thursday, September 30, 1999, in St. John's Regional Health Center, Springfield, Mo. She was born November 29, 1923, in Decatur IL., the daughter of William Francis and Ruth Elizabeth Starkey Hodge. On February 29, 1942 in Vandalia, Oh., Betty was united in marriage to Robert E. Pettus and to this union a son William L. Pettus was born. Betty was a homemaker and a living wife and mother. She was an avid naturalist who appreciated the change of seasons, with autumn being her favorite. Betty also enjoyed shopping for crafts and antiques. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Jean Cushing. She is survived by her loving husband of fifty-seven years, Robert E. Pettus, Springfield; son William L. Pettus and his wife Suzie, Fremont Hills; grandson Robert Francis Pettus and his wife Charity, Springfield; and a great-granddaughter Konner Mikaela Pettus, Springfield. Graveside funeral services was held at 2 p.m., Saturday, October 2, 1999, in Riverrnonte Memorial Gardens, Springfield. with Rev. Todd Staples officiating. Robert Earl "Bob" Pettus, 84, Springfield, Mo., passed away, at 8:43 a.m., Sunday, June 5, 2005, in Cox South Hospital from cancer; he was diagnosed in August 2004. Bob was born August 8, 1920, in Mt. Auburn, Ill., the son of Charles E. and Gertrude Pettus. On February 28, 1942, Bob was united in marriage to Betty Ruth Hodge, whom he worshiped and spent 57 wonderful years together, until her death on September 30, 1999. From August 1942 to November 1945, he proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard, 13th Navel District, as an air sea rescue seaman, 1st class. Bob retired on January 31, 1983, from Wabash Railroad which later became Norfolk Western, then Norfolk Southern as a Supervisor of signals and Communications after working for 42 years. Bob traveled many years with the railroad spending most of his years with them in Moberly, Mo. He and Betty moved to Springfield from Moberly in October 1984 to be nearer to his only son, Bill. He loved visiting old courthouses, spending time at the Springfield Mall where he made many friends on his walks, and taking trips to the "old country" as he called it (Moberly, Jacksonville, Staunton) to visit places he and his wife, "Honey", had known and to see his old railroad buddies. He particularly loved the fall seasons with all the beautiful colors. Bob was an easy-going, wonderful, kind man who made many friends wherever he went. He will be greatly missed by all who were lucky enough to have known him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles E. and Gertrude Pettus, and the love of his life, his wife, Betty Pettus. Bob is survived by his son, William L. "Bill" Pettus and his wife, Suzie, of Fremont Hills, Mo.; his grandson, Robert "Rob" Pettus; his greatgranddaughter, Konner Mikaela Pettus, both of Springfield, Mo.; his sister, Marjorie Cromp and husband, Dan, of Las Vegas, Nev.; his brother, Joe Pettus of Decatur, Ill.; and the many friends he made at Cobblestone Village in Springfield, where he lived until March of this year when he moved into Ozark Riverview Manor. The family would like to send special thanks to Bob's Dr.s and in particular, Dennis Morrison, D.O., Robert C. Scanlon II, D.O., Brent Rotton, D.O., and Amy C Rabe, M.D. Also, Community Hospice of Southwest Missouri and particularly, Julie Saalberg, his Hospice nurse who meant so much to him; the staff at James River Care Center and Ozark Riverview Manor; and the Barnes family Randy, Katie, and Amanda of the Barnes Family Funeral Home who helped in so many ways. He was a member of the Gladstone Baptist church. Sarah C. Pew was born Oct. 8, 1850 and departed this life May 50, 1934 aged 83 years, 7 months and 22 days. She was married to Elijah Pew, Nov. 14, 1867. To this union 4 children were born, 3 boys and one girl. All of which survive. She was converted early in life and lived a Christian life until death. She was a member of the Brown Springs Baptist Church. Besides the 4 children she is survived by 1 sister, 18 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren, many other relatives and friends to mourn her departure. Funeral services were held at 4 o’clock May 31 at the Brown Springs Baptist church conducted by Rev. R.W. Forbis of Marionville, with burial in the Wright cemetery under the direction of Wilburn Maples Funeral Home of Clever, MO.

Mrs. Eliza Peyton of Wellsville, aged 82. She was one of Wellsville’s oldest residents, having lived there more than fifty years.
