Phipps, Stella E. (Scott) 6 Mar 1912 - 4 Dec 1933 CCR 7 Dec 1933 p1

[Note: Daughter of John & Nellie (Cloud) Scott; married ? Phipps]

Gunshot fatal to young woman. Found in smokehouse Monday morning with shotgun wound through left side. Made her home with her uncle, Wayne Scott, north of Ozark where tragedy occurred. One charge from a double barreled shotgun Monday morning ended the life of Mrs. Stella Scott Phipps, 21, in a smokehouse on the farm of her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Scott, near Rogersville. The tragedy happened in Christian county, just south of Greene county line, and an investigation was made by Coroner T.B. Chaffin of Ozark. There were evidences of suicide but Mr. Chaffin said he was reluctant to pronounce the case because he could not be certain. No inquest was held, however, since it was apparent the girl’s death could not be attributed to foul play. Mrs. Phipps, whose parents died in 1925, had lived at her uncle’s home since an unsuccessful marriage about three years ago. She is survived also by a two-year-old son and a brother, Jack Scott, who several months ago joined the civilian conservation corps. Although she appeared often to be troubled, Mr. Scott said she did not discuss her worries with anyone. The uncle declared that his niece never had given indication of any intention to take her own life and did not leave a suicide note. Little could be learned concerning her husband, except that he deserted her soon after their marriage. When found by relatives the body had a shotgun wound just over the heart, death apparently being instantaneous. The gun was kept loaded in the smokehouse. Funeral services were held at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon at Linden chapel, northeast of Ozark, the Reverend Lynn Swadley of Springfield officiating. Interment was made in the cemetery there under the direction of the Chaffin Funeral Home. As Stella Scott she attended the Ozark High School several years.
