Oldest Ozarker Hits 95
Herbert N. Rogers, who is the oldest native Ozark resident, passed his 95th birthday, Friday, November 17. Born in 1883, Mr. Rogers witnessed much of the cultural growth of the community from the time that water was sold by the barrel from the Bluff Spring and the installation of the ram in Garrison Spring up the hollow. As a boy, some of his classmates carried water from the Bluff Springs for the school on the hill. Gone for many years of his adulthood, he returned a few years ago to live out his life in his native community where his father, John Rogers was a banker and his mother, Ivey, a school teacher and community-minded friend to those in need. An annual affair, Mr. Rogers was a guest at dinner with the gentlemen at Ozark Insurance, Dan Fulbright and Bruce Holopter and Stacy Stapp, Greenfield. Often seen on a walk with his green hat and cane, this nonagenarian bids fair to reach his century mark.

Rogers, Ivie Elvina (Southwick) 23 Jun 1861 - 17 Mar 1949 CCR 24 Mar 1949
[Note: Daughter of Hosea & Jerusha (Berry) Southwick; married 21 Dec 1882 John Clark Rogers 7 Aug 1853 - 24 Jul 1942]
Ivie Elvina Southwick was born June 23, 1861 near Little Cooley, PA, and died in a Springfield hospital Thursday evening, March 17, 1949. Her family came to Missouri from Pennsylvania by way of Michigan when she was in early girlhood, living at Buffalo before moving to Greene county and later to Christian county. In 1879, at the age of 18, she taught the “lower room” of the two-room Ozark public school. Professor Vance taught the upper room. There were 60 pupils in her room, which she taught two years. Twenty-eight of her pupils are still living; 13 in Ozark and Springfield. Her declining years have been heightened by an annual reunion of her former pupils, who have come to her home at Ozark from all sections of the land to associate together once more and pay tribute to the former teacher. In 1882, Ivie E. Southwick was married to John C. Rogers, cashier of the Christian County Bank. Mr. Rogers preceded her in death in 1942. Mrs. Rogers was a member of the Methodist church and the united Methodist and Presbyterian congregation at Ozark. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, having at one time served as Worthy Matron of the Ozark chapter. She was a charter member of the Ladies Literacy Club and helped organize the Modern Seekers Club. This group bestowed upon her the honorary title of “Club Mother”. Her immediate survivors are five sons and daughter, Herbert N. Rogers of Springfield, Commander R.E. Rogers, of Ozark, J.B. Rogers of Oakland, CA, Dr. J.W. Rogers of Tulsa, OK, Dr. Charles E. Rogers of Washington, D.C. and Ruth Elinor Rogers of Beverly Hills, CA. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Sunday afternoon at the Ozark Presbyterian church, conducted by the Reverend William F. Vance. Burial was in the Hazelwood cemetery, Springfield, under direction of the Chaffin Funeral Home. Death came for Mother Rogers. She was ready to go. She was tired. She believed that her God knew she had need of him. With a faith simple as a child’s prayer. Mother Rogers was at peace with herself. Her presence brought to our whole neighborhood a serenity we seldom experienced at any other time. Only last Saturday she was seen crossing our yard, a little bent figure tucked in a shawl. She always came to the back door because her knees were unsteady and the front steps were too steep for her. She had come to pay a bill. With gnarled fingers that had ministered to six children, an invalid husband, and innumerable sick neighbors, she opened her purse-a black one with handles. She fumbled slightly found the bills and change and then-bless her-a little paper napkin with candy for the children. No matter how disturbed our household might be, her entrance brought calm. Even children would stand quietly at her knee to receive the expected loving pat on the head. Last Saturday, her visit was especially welcome. She appeared to give no notice when she found me in tears over an illness in my family. She took my hand and we sat down together. She talked of many things, among them her favorite Old Testament quotation: “What doth the Lord require of Thee, but, to do justly, and to love mercy and to walk humbly with Thy God?” Mother Rogers stayed with me for more than an hour and during her visit my worries vanished. Remarkable? No. It was no more than she has done for dozens of her friends and acquaintances for fifty years. One night recently there came a knock. Mother Rogers had sent three play tickets she was unable to use. We went to the play, enjoying it doubly because of her neighborliness. No eulogy can be written for such a cultured humanitarian. She has written her own eulogy in her daily life-written it well in the hearts of her friends-written it beautifully with deeds. I know it was her ardent wish to go before she became helpless, but her death leaves me inconsolable. I loved her dearly. So did you. When her loss is felt too keenly, I shall remember how wistfully she repeated to me the words of a favorite song she had learned as a girl-“I heard a sweet voice, The voice of my God; ‘I love thee, I love thee, Pass under my rod’” Mary E. Shubert March 17, 1949

John Clark Rogers died at his home in Ozark last Friday evening, July 24, 1942. He would have been 89 had he lived to his next birthday, August 7. The immediate cause of his death was a congestion of the lungs. He had had a cancer on his neck for more than two years, for 13 years he had been a semi-invalid. At the time of his death, Mrs. Rogers was with him, as were Margaret Rogers, a granddaughter, his faithful attendant of recent months, L.A. Carter, and Mrs. Albert Morwood, a neighbor. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Frank Brewster at the Presbyterian church in Ozark. Burial was in Hazelwood cemetery at Springfield. The Masonic Lodge of Ozark conducted the burial services, led by Fred Wade. Three of his sons returned to Ozark to attend the funeral, H.N. Rogers of Springfield, Dr. J.W. Rogers of Tulsa, and Charles E. Rogers of Ames, Iowa. His two other sons and his daughter were unable to be present. These are Commander R.E. Rogers of Washington, D.C., J.B. Rogers of Alemeda, Calif., and Ruth Elinor Rogers of Sacramento, Calif. His grandsons Howard and John Rogers, former residents of Ozark, came from Tulsa, their present home, to attend the funeral. Mrs. H.N. Rogers and Mrs. J.W. Rogers, the former Myrtle Walker of Ozark, came to Ozark with their husbands. A number of relatives and family friends from out of town attended the funeral. Among those were Mrs. Carrie Rogers, the widow of his brother, I.N. Rogers, and his nephews John and Elmer Wilkerson and their wives of the Elm Grove and Rogersville neighborhoods; Dr. and Mrs. C.B. Elkins, Mr. and Mrs. R. Neil Gray, Dr. and Mrs. J.A. Robertson, Mrs. Jane Watson, Mrs. Leonard Walker, Miss Helen Walker, Mrs. Lydia Aven, Mrs. Daisy Collins, Mr. and Mrs. John Clark, and Charles Sansone of Springfield; William Collier of Kansas City; Charles Walker and Hal Walker of Milwaukee; Mrs. Nelle Heaton of Sparta; and Mrs. Nellie Walker of Nixa. Mr. Rogers was closely identified with the political business, and social life of the community throughout an active career extending over half a century. He was mayor of Ozark when illness forced him to retire 13 years ago. He had previously retired from active business, after having been identified with the Christian County Bank from its founding in 1886.He was cashier of the bank at his retirement. As a young man he had gone to St. Louis with his brother, I.N. Rogers to study medicine, but soon discovered that he was not temperamentally adapted to the requirements of the profession and turned to commercial studies. At the completion of his course, he returned to Christian county where he first taught country school and then ran for county office. He was successively county assessor from 1876 to 1878, and county clerk, circuit clerk and recorder from 1878 to 1887, the latter three offices being combined at that time. He retained his interest in politics throughout his active years. He was identified with the progressive wing of the Republican party. He was a Roosevelt Progressive in the campaign of 1912. A story teller of extraordinary ability, Mr. Rogers kept alive many of the epic events of the community. His stories are stories that his grandsons and neighbors and friends are now telling; stories that may well find their way into the lasting literature of the region. Most dramatic perhaps was his eyewitness account of the Bald Knobber executions in the jail yard at Ozark in1889. He remembered also many episodes of the Civil War. His father was a country doctor and although he was a strong Union sympathizer, he ministered to the wounded on both sides, and was never molested by the guerrillas of either North or South, both of whom were active in this region. Mr. Rogers was born on the farm near Rogersville which his father homesteaded some time before 1852. The farm has been in the family continuously since his father homesteaded it and is now the home of Mrs. Carrie Rogers and her daughter, Jessie and son, Jack. Mr. Rogers was the last of a family of three brothers and three sisters who were born on the old Rogers farm. Many of the community improvements of Ozark and Christian County owe their initial impetus to Mr. Rogers. He was a lifetime proponent of better roads. He installed the first water works in Ozark. He and his business partner, John S. Taylor, invested their capital in many enterprises which developed the resources of the community, including banks, store buildings, mills, mining, and other industries. Long before state and federal agencies sent extension agents into the field to advise farmers on better farm practices, the offices of Rogers and Taylor in the Christian County Bank at Ozark were a clearing house of information of the latest developments of scientific agriculture. His hobbies were horses, vegetable gardening, hunting, and swimming. His saddle and driving horses were pets and companions. They were a luxury in which he indulged himself without stint because he loved horses. He took great pride in his vegetable garden, and tried each season to be the first in Ozark to have green corn for the table, keeping succeeding crops coming regularly throughout the season until frost. He was an expert rifleman, and taught his sons and many other young men how to use a rifle. He also taught many youngsters how to swim in the swimming holes of Finley River. His life was probably extended a decade by the devoted attention of Mrs. Rogers. Almost throughout the 13 years of his semi-invalidism he required the sort of care a patient receives in a sanitarium or hospital. Mrs. Rogers gave him much more than such a patient can usually hope to receive, thus extending his life to almost the span of four score years and ten.
