Lucy Ann Roper Called By Death

Passes Away at Age of 72 Years After Life of Service to Family and Community

Lucy Ann Roper was born near Weston, Missouri on March 2d, 1854 and her girlhood was spent in that community. A part of her schooling was obtained in the Catholic school in Springfield. She was there as a student when the first train pulled into Springfield. She was one of the student workers in raising money to build the stone wall around the Confederate cemetery. In early womanhood she met George W. Roper, who wooed and won her hand and heart. He was a young Union soldier. Although being but a child while the Civil war was being fought, she could tell some startling happenings during those eventful years. Soon after the war, the lovers were married, the wedding taking place on July 27th, 1874. They lived in Platte county until 1883 when they moved to Richhill, Missouri, a prosperous mining town and remained there until the call of the Ozarks brought them to Christian County in 1894. She loved to return for a visit at her old home, but her heart was with the beautiful Ozark country. She and her husband helped support all the progressive movements of the community and helped in a big way in the development of this country. In 1904, Mrs. Roper was called upon to bury her husband, a big sacrifice for any mother with a large family, but she struggled and fought to rise her children, the youngest being at that time four years old. She bore her trials and sorrows with a patience and fortitude of a true Christian. To the union of Lucy Ann Alexander and George W. Roper there was born eleven children, six sons and five daughters. Those living are Mrs. Georgia Gillahan, Excelsior Springs, Mrs. Lizzie Gardner, Ozark, Mrs. Lola Farthing, McCracken, Miss Anna Roper, Ozark, Dr. J. A. Roper, Ozark, Roy Roper, Ozark, and Charles Roper, Springfield. Four of the children preceded their mother in death. They are Nelson, who died in infancy; Willis, who passed away at the age of 6; Ruby at the age of 26; and Webster at the age of 35. It was on Wednesday, December 8th that this wonderful character was called beyond by her Master. She had reached the ripe age of 72 years, 9 months and 6 days. She was the daughter of Nelson and Lucy Alexander of Weston, Missouri. She united with the Salem Christian church in Platte County at the age of 18 years and she has been of that faith ever since. She was devoted Christian and an affectionate and devoted mother. She was one of those beautiful flowers of motherhood which blossom on earth. She was loved by all who knew her, but our loss on earth is her gain in Heaven. Her life stand before the motherhood of the world, as a monument of sacrifice and love. It has been said the most beautiful thing in the world is a life which weaves itself in tender benediction about the destiny of others, and such was the life of her who was born into this world as Lucy Ann Roper. The funeral services were late last week, with burial taking place at McCracken.

Roper, Ruby Rita 14 Sep 1888 - 18 Apr 1915 CCR 23 Apr 1915 p1

[Note: Daughter of George Webster & Lucy Ann (Alexander) Roper]

No church or community has a greater asset than a truly consecrated life of a christian woman and such was the life of our departed sister, Ruby Rita Roper. She was born September 14, 1888 and was the daughter of George W. and Lucy Roper. She passed this life and on into the Haven of rest at noon April 18, 1915. Sister Roper professed faith in Christ and united with the Christian church in Ozark at the age of 18 and was a devoted christian until her death. No one can speak a word against her life. Hers was a life of exemplary christian womanhood. She was one of our Lord’s faithful ones and is now testing the blessed promise of Rev. 2:10. “Be thou faithful until death and I will give thee a crown of life.” Ruby was a brilliant student. She was educated at Ozark and for six years was one of our best teachers. Her life has been short, but she lived more in her twenty-six years of service than many do in a much longer period. This blossom of only 25 has folded its petals to this world and is now blooming on eternity’s shore:” Rev. 14:13. “Blessed are the dead which died in the Lord from henceforth; yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors and their works do follow the,. Her mother, four brothers and four sisters are mourning their loss and we all join our hearts with them and bow in humble submission to our Father’s will. Well do we strew our flowers. She deserved them. 2 Sam. 12:23 “We shall go to her, but she cannot return to us. For several months, Ruby has been a great sufferer, but she bore it all without a murmur and was always cheerful; she would always say, “I’m doing fine.” Just before she died, she asked her mother to read John: 14 and joyfully commented on its blesses promises. Quietly letting loose of this temporal, she safely spanned the river of death and entered into her rest. It is fitting here to give the memorable words of William Cullen Bryant, for so she lived and died. “So live, that when thy summons some to join That Innumerable caravan that moves To the pale realms of shade, where each shall take His chamber in the silent halls of death Thou goest not like the quarry slave at night Scourged to his dungeon, but sustained and soothed By an unfaltering trust, approached thy grave Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch About him and lies down to pleasant dreams.” A large crown of sympathizing friends attended the funeral April 19 at McCracken. I did what I could in the way of sermon for the occasion; after which Bro. W. T. Vanover delivered an impressive talk and friends offered hands of friendship and words of consolation to the bereaved. The services was impressive and heaven seemed nearer to us. The body sleeps in the beautiful little cemetery at McCracken where it patiently awaits the return of our Lord.  J. A. Wilcox.

Former residents of this county meet tragic death at railroad crossing -- were neighbors of John Ward near Nixa years ago.

From Monday’s Springfield Daily News: Instant death was the fate of Albert M. Powell, 65, deputy state apiary inspector for southwest Missouri, and his companion, Mrs. Ella E. Rose. 60, both of Springfield, when the Ford coupe in which they were riding was struck by the Frisco railway’s eastbound “Oklahoma Special” at the North Nettleton Avenue crossing near the city’s western limits just before 5 o’clock Sunday afternoon. Mr. Powell, a resident of Springfield since 1901, had made his home for some time with a son, Grant L. Powell, 1066 Ferguson Ave., proprietor of a service station. Mrs. Rose had lived in Greene county 12 years and was staying with her daughter, Mrs. Elmer McDaniel, 1675 W. Wall St. Witnesses said that Powell drove his automobile on the tracks from the south, apparently failing to see the onrushing locomotive. They declared the engineer had whistled for the crossing. Both bodies, terribly crushed and with innumerable bones broken, were thrown clear of the car and to the north side of the railroad right of way. The automobile came to rest, a twisted and tangled mass of metal, about 25 yards from the crossing and the man and woman landed another 25 yards further east. Then the body of Mrs. Rose was taken to the Herman H. Lohmeyer funeral home and that of Powell to the Starne mortuary. The latter was moved a short time later to the Lohmeyer establishment for an examination by the coroner. Mr. Powell was widely known in Springfield and southwest Missouri, having served about 10 years as district deputy for the Modern Woodmen of America, prior to his appointment as apiary inspector. He came to Springfield in 1901 from Wheeling, W.Va., and spent [unreadable] years in the furniture business here, first on South Campbell Avenue and then on West Walnut Street. Mrs. Powell died about nine years ago. Members of the family said that he was home until after 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon when he drove away in his car. It was learned later that, at the time of the accident, he was taking Mrs. Rose from the home of her sister, Mrs. Frank Cowan, 505 W. Madison St. where she had been spending the day to that of the daughter with whom she lived. Mr. Powell is survived by two sons, Grant of Springfield and Ralph of Lincoln, Neb., and three brothers, Charles Powell of Joplin, and Warner and Jap Powell, both of Arkansas City, Ark. Survivors of Mrs. Powell include two daughter, Mrs. McDaniel and Mrs. Georgia Thompson, 772 S. Campbell Ave.; four sisters, Mrs. Cowan, Mrs. Arthur E. Sigar, 805 New Ave., Mrs. James Walls of Nixa, and Mrs. John Walters of Kansas City; and two brothers, Palmer Norton and Price Norton of Nixa. Both Mrs. Rose and Mr. Powell were well know in this county, having been residents of the county in the vicinity of Nixa several years ago. John Ward, county clerk, says they lived near neighbors to him for several years.
