David A. Ross, a former resident of Ozark, died at his home in Springfield Monday morning from his own hand. The following account of his death is taken from the Monday Springfield Leader-Press: “Defeated by five years of domestic and financial troubles, David A. Ross, 43, a Frisco railway section hand and father of five dependent daughters, shot himself to death in his bedroom at his home, 1202 N. Rogers, at 5 a.m. today. Ross arose and dressed himself in work clothes—overalls and blue shirt—penciled a note to his family, then sat down on the floor with a 12 gauge shotgun. He placed the stock against the bed, which he alone had occupied last night, the muzzle under his chin. Then he pulled the trigger. Ross was lying dead on the floor when startled members of his family ran into the room, and the gun, which had kicked backward, was resting on the bed, still smoking. The victim’s wife showed police a note in which Ross tried to describe his difficulties. Most of it was incoherent, Detective George Spencer said. One line of it said, “My wife told me five years ago that she no longer loved me,” the detective reported. The widow was obviously broken hearted over her husband’s death. Coroner J.P. Ferguson decided the case was suicide and held no inquest. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Ollie Ross, and the following daughters: Louisa, 17, Mary 16, Martha, 13, Joan, 11, and Betty Gay Ross, 8. Other survivors are Mr. Ross’s mother, Mrs. Emily Ross of St. Louis, two brothers, John and Ruben of Springfield, and three sisters, Mrs. Ida Palmer of Oklahoma, Mrs. Belle Buxton of Ozark and Mrs. Rhoda Feller [note: - correct name - Fowler, wife of Bert Loren Fowler] of McCracken, Mo. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in Ozark at the Klepper Funeral Home with Rev. Ross Carter officiating. Burial was made in the Hopedale cemetery about five miles north of Ozark. Mr. Ross and family lived in Ozark prior to moving to Springfield. He was employed on the Frisco section here and when the company discontinued the line between Ozark and Chadwick, Ross’s seniority took him to a place with the railroad out of Springfield.

[Note: Daughter of Rhuel Earl & Leala M. (?) Routh]

Miss Martha June Routh, 20, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rhuel Routh of Route 10, Springfield, was killed, and two companions were seriously injured Thursday night last week in a wreck on Highway 65 in the Ed King corner, the first turn south of Selmore. Injured were Robert W. Dickenson, 20, of Route 9, and Ewing Mitchell “Mitch” Hough, 21, 1127 Prospect, Springfield. The accident occurred about 11:45 o’clock, according to T.B. Chaffin, who answered a call for his ambulance about that time. Mr. Chaffin said some tourists, a man and his wife, were camped overnight on a parkway at the turn, and he assumed that they had the ambulance called, then just as he was about to leave on the call Wilbur Wilson of Ozark stopped to report the wreck. When he arrived at the wreck scene, Mr. Chaffin said, he found Hough, thrown clear of the car, lying on the ground smoking a cigarette. The girl was pinned under the car, and was dead. Dickenson was in the car, behind the steering wheel. The car, a late model Buick, was upside down at the side of the highway. Mr. Chaffin brought the two youths to the Haguewood hospital, but as a physician was not available, he rushed them to St. John’s hospital in Springfield. Hough sustained fractures of both legs above the knees. Dickenson suffered some concussion, but was able to be removed from the hospital to his home, Mr. Chaffin learned Wednesday. It was reported in Springfield that Dickenson had traded for the Buick coach a day or two before, and the three had driven to Rock-a-way Beach. They planned to return by way of Riverside Inn for a chicken dinner and were headed there when the accident happened. Miss Routh was a junior at SMS and had been employed at the Vanity shoe store and by her father in his real estate office and at the Grandview market which he formerly operated. Young Hough operates Mitch’s service station on South Glenstone in Springfield. The girl is survived by her parents, two brothers, Andy and Rhuel “Bud” Jr., and by five sisters, Norma Jean, Linda Fern, Judith Kay, Janet Eileen, and Mary Ellen, all of the home. Her body was transferred from the Chaffin Funeral Home to Springfield for funeral services and burial.
