Burned to Death
We learn that the three year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stevens of Highlandville was burned so badly Sunday evening that she died in two hours after the terrible accident. From what we can learn, the child’s dress caught on fire from the stove while the mother was out after an armful of wood and by the time she returned her clothing was nearly all burned off. Nothing that could have done was left undone, but death only gave relief.

Steury, Lillie (McCollum) 13 Sep 1902 - 3 Jul 2004 SN-L 10 Jul 2004
[Note: Daughter of Tom & Ida ( ) McCollum; married Frank Steury]
Lillie McCollum Steury passed away at Timberlake Care Center in Kansas City, Mo., on July 3, 2004, with her grandson, Lewis Bunch, at her side. She was the widow of Frank Steury and the daughter of Tom and Ida McCollum, and sister of Alice McCollum Brasfield. All four preceded her in death. Lillie was born on Sept. 13, 1902, in Doniphan, Mo., moving to Springfield at an early age. She spent her 101 years of life accomplishing many things that have touched many people. Lillie was a founder and past president of the Missouri Extension Homemakers Association, a founder of the Greene County Women's Extension Club, a founder of 4-H scholarships for youth, a founder and past president of the Greene County Farm Bureau, a founder of the Greene County Library, a founder of the Missouri County Home Economics Clubs, a 4-H Leader for sixty years, and an active fundraiser for many community organizations. Lillie also served multiple appointments as a member of the State of Missouri Library Board. These appointments were made by three Missouri governors. She also helped pass a bill through the Missouri Legislature for the first Library Bookmobiles for Southwestern Missouri and she also chaired the founder's committee of the Greene County Library, and later was appointed to chair the Southwest Missouri Regional Library Board Commission. However, 4-H, Home Economics and children were what Lillie loved most. Many called her "Dede" and in the 1980s, Lillie McCollum Steury and other Missouri Extension Homemakers Association women planned a self-sustaining dorm for young women desiring a home economics education at the University of Missouri. When, after years of serving its purpose, the house was sold, the assets from the sale were converted into a scholarship for students, thus creating the Lillie McCollum Steury/Campbell-Harrison Scholarship. Lillie was a charter member of the Will Rogers Indian Club and this club and its members were a very important part of her life, allowing her to honor her Cherokee heritage. Lillie served as Princess of their Pow Wow and in 1996 was honored and known as "Beloved Woman." Lillie is survived by one daughter, Alice Steury Bunch, Portland, Ore.; four grandchildren, Lewis Paul Bunch, Kansas City, Mo., Rebecca Alice Bunch Bolen, Beverly, Wash., David Thomas Bunch, and Sharon Sue Bunch Jones, both living in Portland, Ore.; six great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. A graveside ceremony will be held in Maple Park Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Monday, July 12, 2004. Arrangements are under the care of the KlingerCope Family Funeral Home. There will be no formal visitation, but those wishing to pay their respects to Lillie may do so today from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Klinger-Cope Family Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Lillie McCollum Steury/Campbell Harrison Scholarship, c/o University of Missouri, 113 Gwynn Hall, Columbia, MO 65211, or to Greene County 4-H, or to the Greene County Library.
