Eighteen-year-old Chestnutridge boy meets death when gun accidentally discharges and bullet enters his body just below the heart – Alone when accident happens.

Floyd William Stewart, the 18-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Stewart of Chestnutridge was killed about noon Monday when a .22 cal. rifle accidentally discharged, the bullet entering the body just below the heart. Floyd had been working for his brother-in-law, Wayne Lindsey, and it was at the Lindsey home where the accident happened. Floyd was alone. As best the relatives can ascertain from habits and circumstances, Floyd had come to the house at noon for his dinner and, as had been his habit had taken off his shoes and laid down on a cot near the door for a rest, before eating his dinner which his sister had prepared and left on the table. Evidently while at rest he had heard something around the chicken house and arose and with rifle in hand started down the kitchen steps. He must have tripped, discharging the gun, as it was found near the steps. After being shot he made his way to the garage with the thought of going for help, as the body was found just inside the garage doors, one of the doors having been opened. The body was found by Mr. and Mrs. Lindsey when they returned home about 6 o’clock that evening.

Electric Shock Fatal to Youth Cleaning Cistern

An electric shock from a short circuited water pipe in a cistern he was cleaning, instantly killed Gary Ray Stewart, 14, of Highlandville, about 6 p.m. yesterday.  The boy and his grandfather, Ralph Stewart, 57, of Highlandville, were cleaning out a cistern at the Clifford Melton farm near Ozark. They were nearly finished when the charge, apparently caused by a short circuit in the pump house motor, ran down the pipe into the well and hit Gary Ray. When the grandfather tried to go down in the well to help the boy, he was jolted by the current several times before the electricity was turned off. Gary Ray was the son of Clarence Stewart, who recently moved to Springfield from Highlandville. His mother, Mrs. Thelma Bernice Stewart, died last August in the Mt. Vernon sanatorium. Stewart, Gracie 1883 - 2 Aug 1900 CCR 16 Aug 1900

[Note: Daughter of C. J. & ? (Ray) Stewart]

Miss Gracie Stewart, daughter of C. J. Stewart, Ark., August 2d, 1900 of rheumatism of the heart. The body was laid to rest in the Patterson cemetery, seven miles south of Springfield, Friday after noon, Aug, 3d, She had been confined to her room most all the time since April with inflammatory rheumatism and went to Eureka Springs in hopes of regaining her health, but alas, for a short time seemed to grow better only to grow worse. The funeral was attended by a large concourse of relatives and friends to pay their last sad rite to dear Gracie. Her death was expected several days. Gracie was a bright, intelligent young lady for her age and was loved by all who knew her. She was seventeen years of age and leaves an affectionate father, stepmother, four brothers and two sisters to mourn her loss. She was a niece of J. W. Ray and Mrs. J. J. Bruton of Ozark. The bereaved family have the heartfelt sympathy of every one. No word from me will heal the wounded hearts of the fond father, mother, brothers and sisters. The home that was once so pleasant and happy by the bright darling is now stilled by death, the family that was once so happy and contented is now burdened with sorrow. No more will you see her sweet face or her loving voice. She had gone to meet mother and sister gone before. The day before she died, she said. “ I am going home. Mama is over there waiting for me. She is there, and I am going too.” She didn’t fear death but was perfectly resigned to the master’s will. She is not lost but only gone before. “No more you listen to heat Dear Gracie’s voice, so free No more is this cold friendless world She’ll sit inside your knee. Ye weep ‘tis well, for Jesus wept - “Twill be balm for your grief Yet through your fears the star of hope Will bring you sweet relief. A new made grave - a narrow bed. The cold and silent tomb - a Sweet face hidden from our sight. Within the depths of gloom. Soon withered leaves shall o’er it drift and soon the white wreathes snow, and over all in silent dirge The winter winds shall blow. She was beautiful and lovely While with you here below But a far more radiant beauty  Now shines about her brow. Earth has not heard such music As now thrills her with a delight Eyes have not seen such beauties As have opened to her sight. Gone from the earth, yes, gone forever Yes streaming eyes now gaze in vain We shall ne’er hear her voice, no, never - Never more on earth again. Home is sad - Oh, God, how dreary Lonesome, lonely, every spot Listening for her voice, still weary Weary, for we hear it not. Dearest Gracie, how we’ll miss you When the evening shadows come And we gather round the fireside Of our sad and lonely home.  O. I. B.
