[Note: Daughter of John & Martha W. (Chandler) Fulkerson; married m 27 Jan 1876 James Thomas Stricker 31 Jan 1846 - 14 Feb 1928]
In memory of my dear sister, who departed this life Oct. 27, 1919 at the age of 67 years. Mrs. J. T. Stricker, formerly Mary C, Fulkerson, was born May 22 in Halifax, West Virginia and came to Missouri in early life with her parents, She was married to J. T. Strickland in 1876. To this union were born eight children, seven girls and one boy. Four of the daughters are living, the other four have preceded her to the Spirit World. Sister Mary was converted in early life and for more than fifty years she lived a devoted christian having been a member of the Richwood Baptist church for many years. She was more in my company than any other member of the family. Oh! how lonely it will be without her. I can not say she is dead, only away. She had suffered greatly, and longed to be with Jesus and friends gone before. Hundreds has she exhorted to “Prepare to meet thy God” and her dying request to all was “Meet me in heaven.” Farewell sister but not forever, There will be a glorious dawn, We shall meet to part no never On the resurrection morn; Tho thy cold form lies sleeping, In the cold and silent tomb, Thou shall have a Glorious waking, When the blessed Lord shall come, The writer also requests that all who read this will think on death and Judgment and make ready for the change. And also to tender her thanks to the many friends who so kindly assisted in the hour of need, - Permilia J. Chapman

[Note: Daughter of James Thomas & Mary Catherine (Fulkerson) Stricker]
Effie Stricker was born June 21st 1882 in Christian county, Missouri, was converted at the age of ten years and joined the Richwood Baptist church in January 1891 and lived a devoted christian life until her death, which occurred July 31, 1904. She leaves father and mother, one brother and four sisters, with a host of friends to mourn her loss. Just before she died, she called all her family to her bedside and kissed them good bye and said, “I am going to sleep.” She died as she lived, in the triumphs of a living faith, and when our hearts are sad, it is a sweet comfort to known that she is done with the pains and sorrows of this life. The funeral services were conducted by her pastor at Richwood church in the presence of a very large congregation Monday afternoon, after which her body was laid in the Richwood cemetery to await the resurrection. The home will be sad and lonely since she has gone, yet we have the sweet hope of meeting her again in a land where there will be no more good byes. A precious one form us is gone A voice we loved is stilled; A place is vacant in the home That never can be filled W. T. Holbert

In Memory of our dear brother, Frank Stricker, who departed this life, the 17th day of January, 1919, aged 32 years, 10 months and 22 days. We have lost our dear brother, He has bid us all adieu; And has gone to live in Heaven, And his form is lost to view. On, that dear one, how we loved him, Oh,. how hard to give up; But an Angel came down for him And removed him from our flock. Through all pain, at time he smiled, A smile of Heavenly birth; And when an Angel called his hone, He smiles farewell to earth, Heaven retaineth now our treasure, Earth the lovely casket keeps; And the sunbeams love to linger, Where our sainted brother sleeps. This one has me puzzled because of the name Barton. At the top of some of my Stricklands land grants there is a lady by the name of Mrs. Lorena Barton and a date. It looks like the first name of Lorena. Maybe a researcher or maybe a family member. Can anyone help me with this one?
Has anyone else ran across the name Barton?

Strong, M. Harrison 18 Nov 1843 - 5 Sep 1928 CCR 13 Sep 1928 p1
[Note: Son of Nelson & ? ( ) Strong; married 16 Sep 1871 Mary Ann Crocker 18 Nov 1843 - 5 Sep 1928]
Last Wednesday evening, September 5th, 1928, the community was saddened by the report of the death of M. Harrison Stone at his home near Bluff, Missouri, after an illness of only a few days. He was born November 19th, 1843 in the State of New York. During the civil War, he served as private secretary to General Grant and writers on the life of General Grant have often
Talked and consulted with Mr. Strong during his lifetime. He was married in Chicago on September 16th, 1871, by Rev. Ketrick, a Presbyterian minister. Mr. and Mrs. Strong moved to Ozark about 40 years ago, after a business life spent in Chicago in the drug and grocery business. There were no children born to this union, but they have an adopted daughter, Mrs. Meadows who lives near Bluff, Missouri. At the time of his death. He was 84 years, 10 months and 17 days of age. The funeral services were held on Friday, September 7th at 2:30 o’clock from the Presbyterian church in Ozark, with Rev. Hicks officiating. Burial took place in the city cemetery under the direction of T. B. Chaffin.
The above is but a brief and incomplete account of the life of a man who was private secretary to a great general during one of the great wars of history. It probably would take volumes to accurately cover the important incidents of this man’s life. But, in his passing it is an evident fact that the Ozarks have lost a valuable and highly esteemed citizen and the nation a man whose years from nineteen to the close of the war were devoted to the assistance of one of the greatest generals who ever directed an army. And, we venture to say, that if the mind of General Grant could speak, we would probably find that many of the opportune and decisive movements of his army were made after he had been given valuable information on enemy movement by his secretary. No one dare dispute the fact that secretary to the general of a mighty army is a great position. It caries unpaid responsibilities and the fact that M. Harrison Strong remained as General Grant’s secretary from the time he entered the service until the close of the war bespeaks a record of service to his nation, of which the nation should be mindful. But the days of his life are closed’ the sunset that closes down on all life, has settled on his and so words of praise that we now may utter will never find an echo in the mind of him for whom they are spoken. For us, we live in the belief that is you are to give a flower or speak a word, let that flower be given and that word spoken while there is still life. The flower that reposes on the casket of him who lies beneath its cover, can never bring forth a smile with its fragrant perfume nor by the soft touch of its petal on the cheek. The word of praise, uttered with a tremor as we stand by the casket, can never find its resting spot in memory’s sacred portals to bring forth in life hereafter the sweet remembrance of a friend. And so I direct my words to her who mourns. Few companionships have been more pronounced. Apparently a union of two lives according to the instincts of in infinite. In Balzac, we find the essence of a thought that ever lives of those who are human, which meet and melt into a companionship that is as loving and considerate and as true, as the mating of the bird -- then those lives are linked by the unbreakable bonds of infinite approval. And so it seemed to us that such was the companionship of Mr. and Mrs. W. Harrison Strong. The sweetness of their companionship was evidences by their unselfish association. As we saw them in their public life about the square, always together, always considerate of the other’s view; sincerely pals, we would stop our work and through the windows of our office we would watch them, and there would cover over us a desire to write to the world the story of their sweet companionship. And so it is that our words must now be directed to her who now travels alone,. None, but those who have enjoyed a like companionship, can estimate the feeling with which she must greet the dawn and day and as the shades of night approach. But in these saddest of all her hours, because of this companionship, she may take herself into the silence of her chamber, and, there draw out form the past, the soothing ointment of the unnumbered companionship incidents and realize that life has given to her [incomplete - no more copied]

Woman Died In City Crash
Excessive speed was said to be the main factor in the crash here about 4 a.m. Saturday which took the life of Linda Faye Stroud, 34, Springfield. Mrs. Stroud, in a 1979 Chevette, was driving east on 14-65 and lost control when she rounded the curve where 14-65 becomes 3rd Street. Police Chief Bill Ramsey said the car was traveling about 60 miles and hour when it veered off the curve. Officer Floyd Keene investigated. Paul Anderson, owner of the Dairy Cup, 502 N. 3rd St., said the car ran up the bank, went across the Dairy Cup parking area, crossed Farmer Street and wound up against the north side of the Western Auto store. Anderson said he heard the crash and went to investigate while his wife called the Ozark ambulance. She died later at St. John’s Regional Health Center where it was said that head injuries were the cause of death. Greg Hanks, Western Auto assistant manager, said there was little damage beyond some stucco knocked off the outside wall. There wasn’t enough impact to dislodge electronic merchandise on the interior wall.
