Tatum, Eula Mae 3 May 1913 - 17 May 1930 CCR 22 May 1930
[Note: Daughter of Faries S. & Elma (Sims) Tatum]
Eula Mae Tatum, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F.S. Tatum, was born May 3, 1913, and passed away on May 17, 1930, aged 17 years and 14 days. She united with the Selmore Christian church in August, 1920. She is survived by her parents, two sisters, Lena and Mrs. Clay Glenn, three brothers, Neal, Lowell and Huber, besides a grandfather and a host of other relatives and friends. Two brothers preceded her in death in their infancy. The funeral services were held Sunday, May 18, with Rev. B. Frank West officiating with burial in the Selmore cemetery under the direction of T.B. Chaffin of Ozark. Eula Mae was a junior on the Ozark high school. She became ill Wednesday morning and her mother sent her back to bed. Later she got up and went to the chicken house, apparently to seek her mother. She returned and sat at the end of the table in the cook room. Her father, who was in the room with her, asked how she felt and she replied that she couldn’t see, everything was black. Just then she fell back in her chair, her daddy catching her and carried her in to the bed. She remained rational, talking with her relatives and was able to recognize her daddy until Friday evening. She gradually faded away and at 5 o’clock Saturday evening passed beyond. Although the life of this girl covers but a brief span of 17 years, she wove her life and her influence about all with whom she mingled. Helpful, attentive and loving at home; studious and active in her school work; even tempered and a peace-maker with her friends; happy in her surroundings and with her associates; helpful and worshipful in her church. In the month of May, when the flowers of her native fields burst into colorful bloom, she was born. In the month of May, when the same flowers begat the essence of Springtime and by their bursting into bloom exemplify the immortality of the soul, she passed into death. She blossomed in her babyhood, as the flowers with which she mingled and she passed into death and immortality with the flowers which bedecked her casket and perfumed the atmosphere of her resting place. Bitter are the herbs of death when infancy is taken. Likewise is there bitterness when we see the aged silenced in form and personage. But when death creeps in so sudden-like and still and takes from us youth, it seems we taste the bitterness of life, likened unto the bitterness placed upon the lips of the Master as he hung on Calvary’s cross. Another of those mysteries of life is placed before a people, who are unable to understand, with the passing of Eula Mae. Just as she began to see life; just as the perfume of her personality began to sweet the atmosphere of home, school and church; just as she began to smile into the realm of young womanhood; just then, from out the darkness of life came the touch of the unseen finger and almost in the twinkling of the eye, she lies in death. As we write we see from our window the vastness of the sky above, the greenery of the grass and trees, the brightness of the sunshine, the moving of human forms -- none of these which we understand. Neither can we understand the messenger of death, whether the call be to infant, youth or age. And so we realize our weakness and consign our living to the destiny of our own hands and our death into the realms of mystery. But life’s sweetness is left to memory and from that lived by Eula Mae, relatives may gather now and forever more.

Tatum, Huber Faires 15 Feb 1922 - 2 Apr 2005 SN-L 3 Apr 2005
[Note: Son of Faires S. & Elma (Sims) Tatum; married 1949 Betty]
Huber Faires Tatum, 83, died at 1:10 a.m. Saturday, April 2, 2005, in his home in rural Christian County, southwest of Ozark, where he had been cared for by his family through a long illness. He was born Feb. 15, 1922, to Faires and Elma Tatum at their home on the farm homesteaded by Huber's great-grandfather. The youngest of six children, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Neal and Lowell, and two sisters, Eula and Merle. He attended school in Ozark and was a farmer all his life on property west of Selmore where he and his wife, Betty, have lived since 1950, a year after their marriage. He loved his farm and enjoyed few things more than time spent working the fields and caring for livestock. Watching the changes of the seasons and the cycles of nature were a quiet, but constant pleasure for him. Through the years, Huber also held down a variety of outside jobs as a carpenter, propane deliveryman around the region and a millworker in Ozark. He counted among his countless friends the people to whom he delivered fuel and for whom he blended and sold feed and grain. And they returned the gesture. Countless times over the years, his family has seen a chance encounter with an apparent stranger turn into a long conversation with a rediscovered friend from years gone by. Huber remembered names like nobody else. And children's names. And the name of your dog if he'd ever been introduced. He was a member of Selmore Christian Church, where he was baptized in 1935. He served most recently as an elder at the church built on land granted to the congregation by his great- grandfather. February 15, 1922 April 2, 2005 A year has gone since you left us; It seems just yesterday. A million times we've missed you. If love could have saved you, you never would have died. In life we loved you dearly, in death we love you still; In our hearts, you hold a place no one could ever fill. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide and though we cannot see you, you're always at our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing is the same, but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.

Tatum, Lena 24 Jan 1918 - 9 Dec 2010 SN-L 10 Dec 2010
[Note: Daughter of Faires S. & Clara Elma (Sims) Tatum]
Lena Tatum, 92, of Ozark, died early Thursday at her farm near Selmore, where she had lived her entire life. The daughter of Faires and Elma (Sims) Tatum, she was born Jan. 24, 1918 at the family farm homesteaded in the mid-1800s by her great-great-grandparents.
A graduate of Ozark High School, Lena was employed at the general store at Selmore and at her sister's market in Nixa before taking responsibility for the family home when her mother died in 1940. She made a home for and cared for her father until his death at age 90 in 1972 and lived alone on the farm thereafter, a devoted sister and sister-in-law, beloved aunt to three generations and friend to countless neighbors and members of her church. Lena was secretary/treasurer at Selmore Christian Church for more than 70 years, taking responsibility also for the care and cleaning of the church for much of that time. Her dedication to the church and the community's affection for her were celebrated with a 90th birthday party attended by hundreds at the church in 2008. Aunt Lena was a superb cook, whether she was feeding a nephew, a threshing crew or a family Thanksgiving for 40 in her four-room home. She kept the cookie jar, the pantry and two refrigerators stocked at all times, prepared for a continuous stream of hungry visitors.
Impeccably dressed and quiet in public, she donned overalls and work boots every day for 30 years to milk cows by hand alongside her father. She could drive hogs, feed chickens and pluck geese as well as nurture flowers and a vegetable garden, sew clothing for herself and others, piece and hand-stitch quilts, crochet afghans and knit baby blankets - dozens of them.
Most of all, Lena was a patient and positive spirit in a world of hurry and worry. She always had time for friends and family, made as little fuss as possible and tried to leave things better than she found them. She will be missed, but also remembered with love and gratitude. Lena was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Eula Tatum and Merle Glenn; brothers Neal, Lowell, Loren, Lester and Huber Tatum; niece Yvonne Tatum and nephew Keith Tatum. She is survived by sister-in-law Betty Tatum; nieces Beth Tatum and Lee Ann Day; nephews Joe Tatum, Ed Glenn, Bil Tatum and Carroll Wayne Tatum; great-nieces Shyra and Skyler Tatum, Tara Lane, Amanda French and Michelle Glenn; great-nephews Erin, Tahd, Kyle, Caleb, Steve, Jeff, Dan, Clint and Rex Tatum, Bryan Day and Mark Glenn; more than a dozen great-great-nieces and nephews, and cousin Lanford Kerr. The family is grateful for the kindness and attention of caregivers Gaye Bryant and Becky Blades, friends and neighbors Janet Payne, Wilda Micham and Kehaulani Gerhard, as well as the invaluable assistance of medical staff, including Seasons Hospice nurse Donna and aides Diane and Tara. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Selmore Christian Church, with visitation from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Adams Funeral Home in Ozark.
