Helen Jeanette Wise, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clay Wise, was born Oct. 15, 1923, and departed this life at her home in Clever on Feb. 12, 1931, at the age of 7 years, 4 months and 11 days. Helen came to us to cheer and gladden our home. Seven years of beauty and happiness. Her going brings deep sorrow to our hearts, but we expect our love for her to grow and be perfected by Him who has for us a specially prepared place. Not only was she loved in her home, but also by her many friends and schoolmates. Her purity and innocence were, and shall continue to be, an inspiration to all who knew her. We want to imitate her pure life here, and follow her “yonder” when we are called. She leaves to suffer her absence a father and mother, three sisters, her grandparents, a number of other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 27, 1931, at 2 p.m. at the Baptist church in Clever with Rev. Rolla Cook, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the Lorenzo Chapel cemetery under direction of Wilburn Maples Funeral Home.

Charges of first degree murder were filed against Bert Henderson, Sparta druggist, here Monday morning following the death of Dr. H.J. Wise, prominent Christian county physician and Sparta resident, Sunday afternoon in Henderson’s drug store at Sparta. The body of Dr. Wise was found in a rear room of the drug store about 3 o’clock Sunday afternoon, after Henderson came to the sidewalk in front of the store and told passersby “I’ve just shot a man.” Dr. Wise was shot in the lower part of the neck with a 32 caliber revolver belonging to Henderson the bullet entering from the front and ranging upward. Sheriff Joe Monger was called and arrived at Sparta about 4 o’clock immediately taking Henderson into custody. Henderson has told varied and conflicting stories of the tragedy but no motive for either murder or suicide has as yet been disclosed. Henderson’s mental condition for more than 24 hours following the shooting has been described by officers as “out of line.” Thus far he has failed to tell a coherent story of what happened. At the coroner’s inquest held Monday afternoon at Ozark a coroner’s jury returned a verdict of “death by gunshot wound at the hands of one Bert Henderson.” Henderson waived arraignment and is held in the Christian county jail pending the preliminary, scheduled for Wednesday, June 7. The terrible tragedy was a stunning shock to the entire county, both men being prominent in civic affairs at Sparta and well known throughout the county.
