Dear Hearts and Gentle People  “The House That Love Built . ..”

A popular song of several decades ago has these words, “I love those dear hearts and gentle people of my home town . . .” It could be the song of Mrs. Estel (Laura) Wolfe as she fights for her life in Cox Medical Center in Springfield, victim of a ravenging condition. On Saturday Feb. 7, after she entered the hospital, the Wolfe house in Bruner burned of undetermined causes. Nobody was home. Relatives, friends and other people - some she doesn’t even know - swung into action to help, even building a brand new gift house, readied for her return. Mrs. Wolfe has been the Bruner postmaster for the past 19 years. Before that, he parents, Mrs. Bessie and the late John Teague, had it in connection with a grocery. Mrs. Wolfe was told about the fire the night that it happened. Her husband saw no need to keep from her what she would learn anyway. Her sister, Mrs.. Mary Humble of Springfield said, “Her bravery has given strength to us all.” “I’m going to hip this thing,” the sister quoted her in connection with her illness. Mrs. Wolf’s physician allows no visitors except family  members, and then for only a few minutes at a time, Some member of the family is always with her. Of the new home, Mrs. Humble said, “I’ve never seen so much love and kindness, It’s unbelievable the way people have helped. Mrs. Wolfe is a time person but has a large heart. “She has love for everyone, She’s kind and friendly. That’s the way I see her as a sister. That’s the way others see her.. “She has exclaimed so many times, crying sometimes, how wonderful people have been. “It’s really touching the way she has reacted. She’s such a brave person. She has given all of us strength,” Mrs. Humble said. Nobody was home when it burned. Daughter Stacy, 17, a senior at Sparta High School senior, was at her sisters, Mrs. Teresa (Rick) Gilbert of Oldfield. She went to the fire but collapsed and had to be taken back to her sister’s. The homesite is s 200 acre stock farm near Bruner. Stacy is the only child at home. She and her father are living in Sparta in a house owned by Gene Teague, Mrs. Wolfe’s brother. There’s also a son, Terris Wolfe, of Rt. 9, Ozark, employed in Springfield at the Paul Mueller Co. On Sunday after the fire, Mrs. Freida Mae Hartley, sister of Estel Wolfe and owner of Ozark Ready-To-Wear, provided the family with clothing. She then organized the plan for rebuilding. A miscellaneous shower was held at the Bruner Community Building with the entire community helping, Hostesses were Betty Braden and Eloise St. John and Susie Johns of Sparta. Churches in the area included Bruner Baptist, the Wolfe’s church, helped with gifts and money. Robert Gideon of Sparta was hired by Estel Wolfe to supervise the construction of the house, Everyone else who has helped on it has given their time. Roy, Jim and Eddie Going, for example, Bruner, built the cabinets. Here are the names of others: Bruner - Walter and Keith St. John (cleanup equipment at housesite); Howard Applegate, David Hickman, electrician; Jimmie and Orvil Lee Cunningham; Johnnie Ray Clower; Bob, Kenney and Robert Teague, father and two sons, (roof); Charley Redfern (Gravel); Eddie Goins, Rick Thompson, Gene Phillips, Roger Smithson, Dale Orniston and Roger Braden. Sparta - Gary Braden, Earl and Rodney Muilenburg; Jack Phillips, Gene Tennis, Fred Braden. Ozark - Roy Mathews, Bill and Tom Hartley, Lloyd, Ray, Leon, David, Terris and Fred Wolfe.  Oldfield - Rick and Larry Gilbert.

Relatives, neighbors and friends built a new home on the site, with mostly gift labor and materials. She was able to see it and live in it about a week in April when her doctors gave her a leave of absence. She was never thereafter able to return to it. Last Thursday night, the family was summoned for their last visit. She died at 4:10 a.m. Friday. A victim of cancer, she had vowed, “I’ll beat this thing yet.”
